Miss Armistead Makes Her Choice

by Heidi Ashworth

Roses in the Miss Delecourt Series
It all begins when the Dowager Duchess of Marcross sends her grandson, Sir Anthony Crenshaw, to accompany her niece, Miss Ginny Delacourt, to their country estate to check on the roses. The Dowager is concerned since her neighbor is keen on stealing cuttings from her spectacular rose garden for Rosehaven, his rose-inspired country home. On the way, they have a carriage accident and are held up by highwaymen but it isn't until they are quarantined at Rosehaven for the pox that Ginny's and Sir Anthony's love begins to bloom.

Thus the series begins...

Adult Historical Romance

Mr. Colin Lloyd-Jones and his friend, Sir Anthony Crenshaw, make a pact to avoid the fair sex during the course of an entire season in order to nurse their wounded hearts. As they shake hands on it, they have no idea that one would soon be off on a trip to escort a young lady to the country and the other soon to fall head over heels in love with Miss Elizabeth Armistead. Sadly, Miss Armistead is only interested in those she trusts not to become so besotted with her beauty that they cannot see her true self. Prior to meeting Colin, she had only met one man fitting that description and she has promised to be his bride. However, Mr. Cruikshank is not due to arrive in London for a full month.
Can Colin convince Miss Armistead that he loves her for more than her beauty before her betrothed's ship arrives on British shores?

More About Miss Armistead Makes Her Choice and the Author, Heidi Ashworth

1. What is your motivation behind this book? Why did you want to write it?
In my novella, The Lord Who Sneered, there is a character who is briefly mentioned who has been terribly wronged. I wanted to give him a happy
ending.

2. What do you hope readers take with them when they read your book?
I hope that they develop a lingering affection for the characters and that they get something more from it than pure entertainment. I hope that my stories illustrate what it means to truly love someone rather than to simply be infatuated or "in lust" and that there is a realization that great relationships require work and sacrifice.

3. Do you have a favorite scene?
I guess the scene in the churchyard b/c it is the most romantic.

4. Share something about you that is unique - maybe about how/where you write... or favorite snack foods?
I have a certain playlist on my computer that I listen to when I write. And I must be availed of a quantity of chocolate. Music and chocolate are my muses.
5. Did you do any kind of research to determine the details of your   characters lives / lifestyles?

Yes, I had to do research about India since this is where the heroine was born and raised.  It was very interesting.  Of course I have done quite a bit of research with regard to the regency era from my first book going forward.  It is an endless source of fun for me.

6. The best book/s you ever read ?

I absolutely adore books and have read so very many.  I have preferred different books at different stages of my life and I find that how one feels about a book has everything to do with which ones you have read before.  What was once a favorite might seem pretty dull after further reading.  In the end, it is the books that made a deep impact on me that have stood out over the years.  For me, those would be:  Little Women by Louisa May Alcott, The Chronicles of Narnia, the Lord of the Rings books, The Good Earth, A Separate Peace, Pride and Prejudice, Les Miserables, Georgette Heyer’s Georgian romances and many of her regencies, and the Outlander series (though I confess to not having yet read the last two—also, I have to say that these are the only books I have ever read that are not “clean”), The Princess Bride and Helen’s Babies (two of the funniest books ever written).  There are many lesser known fantasy (I love Le Guin, Springer, McKillip and MicKinley) and regency romance novels (other than Heyer my favorites are Joan Smith, Carla Kelly, Barbara Metzger, Susan Carroll and Marian Devon) as well as historical fiction that I have really enjoyed over the years (particularly those by Norah Lofts).

7. Did any real-life political incidents or maneuvering make it into the book?

Not in this one but my last full length novel, Lord Haversham Takes Command, addresses the issue of Queen Victoria’s danger from assassination.  Fun stuff.

8. What is your favorite quote?

I honestly don’t have one.  I love words and the excellent use of them too much to narrow them down to just one quote.

9. What sacrifices have you had to make to be a writer?

Are you kidding?  None!  However, I chose to sacrifice my writing to raise my family.  I wrote a lot when my oldest was a baby and toddler and then had to put it all away when my daughter came along.  When my oldest was a teenager and my third baby started first grade, I started writing again.  (BTW, it was totally worth it.)

10. Do you think that the cover plays an important part in the buying process?

Oh yes, very much so.

11. How did you come up with the title? Names?

Miss A is part of a series which made it not at all hard to come up with the title as they all have a similar structure.  However, coming up with the name for my first book was tough.  It changed several times but the one I finally landed on was not a favorite of my publisher’s.  My editor felt it was too common (It was called Darling Buds of May—you decide) and told me to change it.  That caused quite a bit of panic since this news came more than a year after I signed the contract and very shortly before it was due to come out.  I thought very long and hard for several days but finally made a list of five possible titles for my editor to choose from.  She chose Miss Delacourt Speaks Her Mind, which was created from a suggestion made by my twin sister.  (Thanks, Sis!)
Names:  I love to choose names from those of my family and friends.  It’s a blast.  Of course my characters and the names they end up with rarely have much in common.  However, in the case of Miss Armistead Makes Her Choice, I do have a nephew named Colin (which is my hero’s name) and both of them have a sister named Analisa.  I also included the surname of every single one of my sisters and my sister-in-law in this book, as well as my brother’s first name.

Heidi Ashworth, author of the popular Miss Delacourt series, including the award-winning Miss Delacourt Has Her Day, is a busy wife and mother who's grateful for a bit of peace and quiet in which to write. An unapologetic anglophile, she is determined to return to England to see the home of Jane Austen, a landmark she missed during her first trip across the pond, though she knows Lord Byron's house to be a suitable substitute. She's smitten with books, chocolate, and roses, not necessarily in that order, and is never averse to a round of Guitar Hero.
