Author Tawna Fenske Release Party and $35.00 Amazon Gift Card Contest LIVE Here!

Hey, guys! I’m super excited to hang out with you classy babes (as well as you not-so-classy babes—we’re in good company, right?)
It’s release day for my new romantic comedy, Protector for Hire, and I’m stoked for readers to get their hands on this funny, sexy tale of a woman forced to hide out in the Montana wilderness with a hot, reclusive stranger as her bodyguard.
I’ll confess a few tidbits of this story were stolen from my own real-life experience living in a remote cabin in Montana right after college. Of course, I might have left out some of the….uh, less romantic details of wilderness living. Like having foxes ransack your garbage because you can’t make the 60-mile drive to the landfill. Or learning to “wash” your hair with baby powder because the pipes have frozen (again). Or accidentally smashing your own car bumper during a failed attempt to drive a snow plow.

Janelle and Schwartz don’t have to deal with any of those things in Protector for Hire, but they do find themselves in plenty of other compromising situations. I’m not sure I ever imagined myself writing sexy scenes about splitting firewood, fleeing a moose attack, or doing mud masques with wet clay from a creek bank, but those all made it into the book (and turned out pretty hawt, if I do say so myself!) I’m also guessing this may be the first time in the history of romance novels that two characters use PopTarts as an element of foreplay. Something tells me the folks at Kellogg’s won’t be adding that to their marketing materials anytime soon.

In any case, thanks for joining me to celebrate release day for Protector for Hire. Champagne and PopTarts all around!

Excerpt from Protector for Hire

“You were gone a long time,” she said. “Did you have trouble finding something?”

He frowned, not wanting to admit he’d been pacing around the damn store avoiding the inevitable moment he’d have to go back and face her and accept the fact that he’d probably never touch her again. “Not everything,” he said, poking the meat loaf with his fork but not taking a bite. “I got the milk.”

“No cond—coffee filters?”

“They were all out of cond—coffee filters.”

“All out?” She frowned. “I swear I saw a box when we were there the other day. They were right up by the register.”

He shifted on the bench, not wanting to admit he’d stared at the same damn box of condoms and thought about having her again. Maybe just one more time before she walked out of his life forever. Instead, he’d forced himself to walk away. “The box was damaged. Can’t risk having holes in coffee filters.”

Across the table, Gordy wiped his chin with a napkin.

“You like the kind with the pointy tip, or the big wide ones?”

Schwartz blinked. “Uh— ”

Laverne beamed. “Oooh, I like the new ones they’re making now with the flavor-enhancing micro-perforations.”

Schwartz dared a glance at Janelle and saw that her face had gone from pink to bright red. She opened her mouth to say something, but Laverne cut her off.

“You know, I just love the ones with the extra-large base. The box says it makes for a deeper, bolder experience.”

Janelle choked on her drink, and Schwartz turned to see her sputtering into a glass that looked suspiciously full of moonshine.

“How much of that have you had?” he asked.

“Not enough,” she said.

Turn On the Light So I Can Hear by Teri Kanefield - Review

A young artist badly in need of money bluffs her way through an interview into a job she is not prepared for.

To succeed, she must make room in her life for two people: Curtis, a deaf architect who has sworn he will never date a hearing woman, and thirteen-year-old Alex, profoundly deaf, rebellious, bold, and frightened. As each takes new risks in friendship and love, the hearing and deaf worlds come together.

My Review
I'l start from the cover - It is so beautiful. that it took my breath away.
Now, the title - only after I started to read the book the real meaning of it sank into me and I think it's fits. so fit that it's like glove to the plot. The title is so right and so ingenious that it made me wonder, why it never occurred to me before how deaf person would manage without a light (and please, don't bring forward Helen Keller, which I admire too).

Anyway, I got this book by mail, two months ago from the author, and I didn't had the chance to read from too many reasons, that I almost forgot that I had it at all. But guess what, after a YA fantasy book after YA fantasy book, so many books which I started and after few pages or few chapters max.... I decided that I need a break something else for a change... so I looked at the piles of books which were waiting on me to read them, accumulating dust and started to go over them.... when I reached to "Turn On the Light So I Can Hear", I stopped enchanted by the cover turn it over to read the summery.... I didn't understand much from it.... only it is not a YA fantasy book.... and I wasn't disappointed more than this I really fell in love with it.

"Turn On the Light So I Can Hear" is a refreshing wind, it is written in a very precise language, it is like few detail drawing that can tell you the whole story. You can, practically, see the colors and shapes of the feelings. And this analogy didn't come out of the blue - because the main character Bretna - is an artist, who use her art to sort things. For example, she is using Colors to describe the character of the people around her, even though her main art is sculpturing. For her sculptures, she is using a very difficult material, broken glass... and when people asking her a bout this choice - her answer is always the same - the most beautiful art creations come from broken things.

As the story unfold, we will discover more and more layers to the young artist which just came out of school of art and in her desperation to survive, "bluffing" her way into a job (I put bluffing in quotation marks in purpose because I think it is not a total lie and the reader will understand this claim better when he will be too deep in the book). The job is - an interpreter and tutor for a 13 year old deaf boy, Alex, whose parents chose for him to go to a regular school, for 18 dollars per hour. In her interview she is also telling that at the age of 5 yo she suffered from hearing lose, which treated but since then in one ear she has an hearing disability. This small information will be important key to understand her better.

Bretna accept the job offer, the problem is she doesn't know signing language, but she has all summer to prepare herself and she takes class in the the deaf community, there she met Curtis is a deaf man who teaches ASL (American Sign Language)and payed him for extra tutoring lessons. Bot with the handsome charismatic Curtis it was just a matter of time before a relationship was built(Even tough, he claim that he don't date with hearing women).

I thought it funny that, when she meet Alex she realized Alex’s signing ability was sloppier than hers. Alex just wants to fit in like any other boy at his age.

As the story keep unfolding we learn about her dysfunctional family, ans her journey to live her life Independent from there clutches. I must admit in this point, that Bretna throw me into my personal story and at times I found myself crying, but still I couldn't stop reading till the end of the book. Not many, succeed to do this, and even my personal story is not the same I could find the similarities and it made me wonder, what would happen to me if I chose the art way to fulfill.

This Book is also about communication/or miscommunication - between the hearing and the deaf, among family members, between teachers (tutors, interpreters) and students, between roommates, between couples. The sign for "think-hearing." for instance, means "A deaf person who tries to be like a hearing person...." And Teri Kanefield bring out that the differences between the deaf community and the hearing community aren't just about language.

And it also touches forms of mental illnesses without naming any specific ones. Bretna raised by an emotionally unavailable father and a mentally unstable mother. Her mother blamed Bretna for every bad thing that happened and constantly told her and every one else that she is a violent, bad person and Bretna believed her. At 18, Bretna left home and moved across the country. meeting different people family and other that know her family , in purpose to understand why her family is so dysfunctional and whether she was crazy too or not.

Bretna, always felt as an outsider, with her family and now in her relationship with Curtis, which loved very much, and his friend from the deaf community. But this background helped her in her relationship with Alex, which was on his an outsider in an hearing society (school and family, the same. She could understand him better then his own mother who has an academic title in learning disabilities, better then his consultant who herself had a deaf son and better them Curtis who had issues with hearing people. So she was the only one which Alex trusted, and for a long time he was the only one who able to do this.

It took time to bring other to learn how to appreciate this quite, talented, sensitive person that she was.

It’s either the beginning or the end for Sadie James. She came to the small Adirondack town of Andora looking for a fresh start. One that didn’t include the pitying looks of strangers who saw her on the news. Only days into her new life and already she is in trouble. That is, unless the wolf in front of her was salivating at the sight of some other woman in the vast forest around her.

After killing his sister, Tyson searched for oblivion the only way he knew how to. As a wolf he could run from the life he left behind and become the animal he always was. The time between lucidness grows longer each times he surfaces. One day he won’t be able to come back at all. It was the only thing he looked forward to until a lost woman fell at his feet.

Sadie is in danger and she is blind to it. Although, it was never proven, Tyson always believed Jack was behind his sister’s ultimate demise. Now Jack has his sights set on Sadie. Can he fight the pull of the wild or will he let her face the wolves alone?

excerpt

Stupid, foolish woman. It was the first time in 330 days that Tyson wanted to change to human just so he could yell at this blonde ditz clomping around the forest ruining the peace of the day. If scaring away his venison dinner wasn’t bad enough, she was totally unaware of her surroundings. Not even two minutes ago she almost stepped on a rattle snake in those shiny new boots of hers. This is why he didn’t do the human thing anymore. They were all too loud and blunderous. Wolves on the other hand were graceful, lethal.

Oh for fuck’s sake. That’s poison ivy you idiot.

In all honesty, he could excuse all of that if she wasn’t so damn beautiful that he felt compelled to follow her. It actually pissed him off when he saw her smile with those stormy gray eyes of hers. They were a cool gray that was almost blue, the hues all shades of a hurricane right off the ocean. Her hair was as light as honeysuckle. It was natural too, no chemical smells coming off her at all, and it had shimmers of sun lightened highlights.

Since he was having a momentary mental lapse and was being surprisingly honest, he was actually angry at himself. Self-loathing was all he allowed himself to feel for almost a year. He didn’t deserve attraction. He shouldn’t be feeling interested in the lost woman who, Gaia help him, made him want to be a man again so he could yell at her properly. When you kill your sister, your last living family member, because she was brainwashed into being a traitor, a threat to the pack, and it was your job to remove those threats, you lose your right to feel attraction. And any other of the “good” feelings.

Her small wilting frame called out to all of his instincts, human and wolf. It had been awhile since he followed his human instincts, been awhile since he even felt them. So the careless woman, who spoke to his wolf and human alike, who pissed him off with her golden hair and startling gray eyes, who’s ignorance in the world around her made him growl in frustration, was now under his protection.

Suddenly, irrationally angry, Liam straightened. “How can you defend him after what he did? To you, to Mom, to my birth parents, to everyone we cared about?”

With a howl of despair and emotional agony, Liam dashed forward, through the shade of his father, blindly running into the sewers.

What is the Price of Vengeance? One could understand why Liam was angry. He was orphaned at the age of two by a group of giant carnivorous insects called the chitin. Adopted by High Councilor Marcus and his wife, Lidia, Liam was raised with their older son, Randolf in New Olympia, the last remaining city on the planet Etrusci. As an adult, Liam becomes a soldier. After being cut off from the city, Liam finds that there is an alien intelligence behind the chitin. To defeat it, he must discover who he is and how to use his powers. Then, Liam discovers that a traitor, responsible for his birth parents’ deaths, had murdered his beloved foster parents. Will the price he has to pay in his quest for vengeance prove to be an even more unbeatable foe?

How Anthropology and Archaeology shaped
The Dreamscape Warriors Universe
First I want to thank Sarit from Coffee, Books & Art for having me onboard as a guest blogger and for being a stop on my blog tour. In May of 2010, I came to the end of a 14 year journey. I walked across the stage in the University at Buffalo’s Arts Center to receive my hood and diploma for my PhD. (Technically, it says this happened in June.) I received a Master of Liberal Arts in Anthropology and Archaeology from the Harvard University Extension School and a Master of Literature from the National University of Ireland in Galway.

One reviewer for Price of Vengeance felt a little disappointed that there wasn’t more archaeology in the story. So how did my studies and research affect my storytelling?

When delving into the different worlds of speculative fiction, I found the anthropology end of things useful in world building. While I can’t say settings are easy, they are easier than culture. Cultures contain a number of interrelated pieces that include kinship, gender relationships, religion, and politics, to name a few. These are tools that cultures use to ultimately relate to each other and the world around them.

I eventually plan on dealing with the various alien cultures that inhabit the Dreamscape Warriors Novels. For now, I’ll focus on two of the human cultures. The one we see the most in Price of Vengeance is the Neo-Etruscan culture. It is made up of the decedents of humans who were genetically engineered to be perfect, at least as their creators saw perfection. After their creators vanished, their creation decided the ideal of perfection was unrealistic. The Temple of the Creator gained political power as the priestesses discovered they had telepathic powers, especially the power to heal empathically. The culture is loosely based on Terran Classical culture. There is also a counter culture referred to as the pro-Founders’ movement. Their goal is to return their culture to the path of perfection their Founders intended. This opened a whole new storyline in Promise of Mercy, when the founders return, apparently from the dead.

The Finnian are another race of genetically modified human. They were created to be warriors and to supplant the original human population of Earth. This led to a horrendous war between the Finnian and the people of Earth. Then the Finnian found that a genetic flaw was causing their natural population of men to plummet. Finnian women began to look to Earth POWs for potential companionship. This led to the two groups comparing notes. What the Finnian discovered caused them to turn on their creators.

Finnian culture is loosely based on an admittedly idealized Irish culture. Technically other human cultural elements were thrown into the mix. Over the centuries, they evolved a double descent kinship system that became their basis for government with clans and tribes. Double descent kin groups trace descent through both matrilineal (female) and patrilineal (male) lines, though the two lines are used for different purposes. Their language is based on Irish Gaelic, and they have a strong system of oral tales and strong family ties.
