“Why do I read?

'‏‎“Why do I read?
I just can't help myself.
I read to learn and to grow, to laugh
and to be motivated.
I read to understand things I've never
been exposed to.
I read when I'm crabby, when I've just
said monumentally dumb things to the
people I love.
I read for strength to help me when I
feel broken, discouraged, and afraid.
I read when I'm angry at the whole
world.
I read when everything is going right.
I read to find hope.
I read because I'm made up not just of
skin and bones, of sights, feelings,
and a deep need for chocolate, but I'm
also made up of words.
Words describe my thoughts and what's
hidden in my heart.
Words are alive--when I've found a
story that I love, I read it again and
again, like playing a favorite song
over and over.
Reading isn't passive--I enter the
story with the characters, breathe
their air, feel their frustrations,
scream at them to stop when they're
about to do something stupid, cry with
them, laugh with them.
Reading for me, is spending time with a
friend.
A book is a friend.
You can never have too many.”

Poetry time !

We've become a
civilization of diseases
we build
monuments
statues
institutions
thinking death won't ever find
us here.

Our minds are scrambled
our bodies are damaged
our food is poisoned
our skies are toxic
our vices
are forces of processes
beyond our
control.

When we are not humbled
by nature's power
we inflict our wounds
upon ourselves in
the names of greed
and self protection
and no one knows
what it really means.

Fearful of the silence
we fill our skies with
endless noise
babbling on in endless
monotones, droning
while traffic stalls
at a hot stand still
idling engines
idling souls
depletion of every last glimpse
of the past.
Jam packed
in the stench
I am lost today
in
this vitriol
as anxiety, death and desperation
from every corner
screams my name.

That's why I came
to these woods
where the illusion of
peace remains
as
wild fires burn
just down the lane
as you know
as you say
its always been this way
when bodies hung
at every cross-roads
hunger, power, ignorance
and strength
all ran
the show.

I'm sick with
every disease I
know.

I float upon these tranquil
blue waters
and
we are reminded of the peace we all
really can know.

The burden of all
these lives
is bringing me down to
size
buried in the
sorrows of others
I must confide, my dear
My dreams are
filled with
dread of another day
But my work is never
done - the walking wounded
an endless line,
a samba line
dancing to a thousand
individual tunes
all of which
wind up echoing
in my mind as I listen
for those common themes
search for any magic words
I can bring back to
you, my dear
as you sit in that
four white walled
room
Speaking to a
random sound
and I with all
those questions
all that experience
all those answers
helpless in
my divide
the professional
the personal
both in total heartbreak, my dear
both only left with that
long lost loving sigh.

The dawn was no longer coming
The earth was no longer spinning
The horizon frozen.
We had moved into the deep chill
of our lives
The deep chill of our love.
Stone cold granite silence
Dancing around each other in
slow motion rotation
eyes like arrows
eyes like mirrors
words silent daggers
breath like icicles
held and panting,
volcanic eruptions seething
beneath the surface,
choreographed
hurt and rage
posing
feigning
covering up,
boiling blood
in
this frozen silence

civil, constrained, polite.

We turned around
walked away again,
alone
again,
with nothing changed
and
nothing said.

There’s a place up the avenue
Where lovers come to fail
Look at each other with dispute
And hate is all they feel.

When they check in they always say
“I tried so hard, where do I sign my name.”
They always complain about the investment they have made
Does the room, have a place to change?
The credit card’s declined
The Hotel never seems to mind
The key is in the shape of a broken arrow
right to the heart.
The desk clerk smirks
Gets your name exactly right,
Even though you’ve never met
until this night.

The concierge will give you directions to the local graveyards
The bell hop only dances and never says a word
When you give him a tip, he’ll only throw out your words
The elevator only goes down
The only music heard is the sound
Of a solitary heart beating in rhyme
Singing the song
“You will never be mine”.

The hall way corridor goes on forever backwards in time
The lonesome sounds of whales singing
Echoes through the halls, coming through the walls
And from beneath every door.

The rooms offer amenities
The devil dancing in the pain
On the head of a pin
The walls have one function
That’s to close on in.

The ribbon of blood
That seeps through the mirror
Dances in inkblots all the way
To the sink
Which drips tears of
Frustration
Resignation
Isolation
Recriminations.

The bathtub waters
Only run too hot
or
Too cold.

There is a bed of nails
Inviting ruminations
The images of her with him
Him with her
Strobes on the ceiling in endless loops
Of anguish’s fatal tunes.

Room service offers a variety of suicide utensils
The mini-bar contains a row of empty bottles
and a syringe without a needle.

The garbage men are always out side
Garbage cans crashing through the endless night sky
The windows open to brick walls
While couples in bliss dance cheek to cheek
In the bar across the street
Sometimes they look up at you and smile
That smile.

This nightly room has become a weekly
The weekly a monthly
And if you are not careful
Stay too long
Once you check in
The check out will always be closed
At the Hotel Heartbreak
Just down the road.

There's a full moon risin'
in a blackened sky
there's a full moon
sittin' huge
on the horizon sky.

There's someone standin'
on top of that hill
could it be I?
Hearin' music coming thru the trees
dancing
an old soft shoe

There's a shadow bein' cast

Poetry time by John Stevens

I think that I shall never see
A leaf as lovely without a tree
When it falls upon the ground
So gently placed to be found.
A child gathers it in her hands
Carefully places it on the sands
Hoping to grow a brand new tree
For all the world new life to see.

The last four lines had many interruptions (5 year old). Changed direction at least three times. Could not remember where it was going. The child was driving this one.

Poetry time Amber

weightless leaves,
harbingers of boreal winds,
how fleeting flow the days
and how long follow the nights

but i keep them close,
the lights that still smile
into my fragile nocturnes
and hold me in their arms.

they are
a song of river streams,
a melody of lemon fireflies

where
the image of us
is mirrored
in the realm
of infinite summer.

where
we are wild and free.

centuries
of dreamlike flowers
were gone

and returned
to where the sun
beautifies
your dawn

and i speak
by early shades
smiling to you
in blue dreams

the storm
is my soul

the shelter
is your heart

yet
i still find
light
to answer you
with stories
of ancient rays

so

you linger
and you fly
so close to me

along
a sacred wind

where i found
exile
away from time

i paint the dawn
in cinnamons and ginger reds,

a blizzard of purple flowers
across the quiet meadow
of birthing lights,

sparkling river mist
and the rustling
of emerald leaves,

birds singing
a joyous aubade
above the silver wine
of petaled dew.

i shape the sun like heart,
clouds like graceful swans
along the azure flow
of serenity

and if the valley outside
awakens to sorrow,
the day becomes
a soft watercolored wind
sailing within the sweetness
of mysterious dreams.

she remains starless
where aches fade and leave
but she lets them leave
to breathe again
and to live.

she speaks in languages
trees and seas understand
bowing to the sun
and shaping days into fairytales

saying
she needs an escape or may be
another alien summer.

or may be
an embrace

breathe the flame of your smile
upon her dreams that knew no home
and wounds that surrendered to no healer.

play a blue guitar song
until the stars dance in golden unison
to the tune of glory and wonder
basking in the glow of your heart.

see forever in her eyes
without words or memories
and sing tenderly
during hours of pale dawn
until her broken piano keys
play the melody of joy
and the sky delivers you
into her loving arms.

10 Famous Poems Recited by Famous Actors

Recently, I stumbled across a video of Jake Gyllenhaal reading Wilfred Owen’s Dulce Et Decorum Est, a poem that is about how war is in no way glamorous.  He read the poem at a fundraiser to provide mental health services for soldiers suffering from PTSD. The event was called Words at War, and Gyllenhaal’s choice of words was more than fitting.
This got me to thinking about other actors who have leant their voices to poetry that is, sometimes, even more famous than they are. Here are a few of my favorites:
Bill Murray reads to Construction Workers at Poet’s House

Emma Thompson reads “Death Be Not Proud” by John Donne
(As seen in the HBO adaptation of Margaret Edson’s play Wit).

Anthony Hopkins reads “Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night” by Dylan Thomas

Tom Hiddleston reads Sonnet 18 by William Shakespeare

Patrick Stewart reads “To Autumn” by John Clare

Glenn Close reads “I Like For You to be Still” by Pablo Neruda

Bryan Cranston reads “Ozymandias” by Percy Bysshe Shelley

Sophie Okonedo reads “The Soldier” by Rupert Brooke
And not a poem, exactly, but a relatively recent reading by an actor who can make the phone book sound good -

Benedict Cumberbatch reads a love letter.

The Buried Life By Matthew Arnold

Matthew ArnoldLong before it inspired a basic-cable series dedicated to MTV douchebaggery, Matthew Arnold’s 1852 poem, “The Buried Life,” inspired generations to quiet introspection.Who has not, after all, sensed that there might be something more to life?
Something richer? Who has not felt bitter sadness at their inability to escape the immediate demands of life in order to pursue an unclear purpose and invisible meaning?
Like generations have before me, I too have found solace and desperate inspiration in its 98 lines, and I wanted to use this forum to experience it’s wisdom once again. After all, as the poem’s speaker suggests, “The same heart beats in every human breast.” (The Arnoldian Project)
2013-02-14 13.39.16
Light flows our war of mocking words, and yet,

Behold, with tears mine eyes are wet!

I feel a nameless sadness o'er me roll.

Yes, yes, we know that we can jest,

We know, we know that we can smile!

But there's a something in this breast,

To which thy light words bring no rest,

And thy gay smiles no anodyne.

Give me thy hand, and hush awhile,

And turn those limpid eyes on mine,

And let me read there, love! thy inmost soul.

Alas! is even love too weak

To unlock the heart, and let it speak?

Are even lovers powerless to reveal

To one another what indeed they feel?

I knew the mass of men conceal'd

Their thoughts, for fear that if reveal'd

They would by other men be met

With blank indifference, or with blame reproved;

I knew they lived and moved

Trick'd in disguises, alien to the rest

Of men, and alien to themselves—and yet

The same heart beats in every human breast!

But we, my love!—doth a like spell benumb

Our hearts, our voices?—must we too be dumb?

Ah! well for us, if even we,

Even for a moment, can get free

Our heart, and have our lips unchain'd;

For that which seals them hath been deep-ordain'd!

Fate, which foresaw

How frivolous a baby man would be—

By what distractions he would be possess'd,

How he would pour himself in every strife,

And well-nigh change his own identity—

That it might keep from his capricious play

His genuine self, and force him to obey

Even in his own despite his being's law,

Bade through the deep recesses of our breast

The unregarded river of our life

Pursue with indiscernible flow its way;

And that we should not see

The buried stream, and seem to be

Eddying at large in blind uncertainty,

Though driving on with it eternally.

But often, in the world's most crowded streets,

But often, in the din of strife,

There rises an unspeakable desire

After the knowledge of our buried life;

A thirst to spend our fire and restless force

In tracking out our true, original course;

A longing to inquire

Into the mystery of this heart which beats

So wild, so deep in us—to know

Whence our lives come and where they go.

And many a man in his own breast then delves,

But deep enough, alas! none ever mines.

And we have been on many thousand lines,

And we have shown, on each, spirit and power;

But hardly have we, for one little hour,

Been on our own line, have we been ourselves—

Hardly had skill to utter one of all

The nameless feelings that course through our breast,

But they course on for ever unexpress'd.

And long we try in vain to speak and act

Our hidden self, and what we say and do

Is eloquent, is well—but 't is not true!

And then we will no more be rack'd

With inward striving, and demand

Of all the thousand nothings of the hour

Their stupefying power;

Ah yes, and they benumb us at our call!

Yet still, from time to time, vague and forlorn,

From the soul's subterranean depth upborne

As from an infinitely distant land,

Come airs, and floating echoes, and convey

A melancholy into all our day.

Only—but this is rare—

When a belovèd hand is laid in ours,

When, jaded with the rush and glare

Of the interminable hours,

Our eyes can in another's eyes read clear,

When our world-deafen'd ear

Is by the tones of a loved voice caress'd—

A bolt is shot back somewhere in our breast,

And a lost pulse of feeling stirs again.

The eye sinks inward, and the heart lies plain,

And what we mean, we say, and what we would, we know.

A man becomes aware of his life's flow,

And hears its winding murmur; and he sees

The meadows where it glides, the sun, the breeze.

And there arrives a lull in the hot race

Wherein he doth for ever chase

That flying and elusive shadow, rest.

An air of coolness plays upon his face,

And an unwonted calm pervades his breast.

And then he thinks he knows

The hills where his life rose,
And the sea where it goes.
 ********
But often, in the world’s most crowded streets,
But often, in the din of strife,
There rises an unspeakable desire
After the knowledge of our buried life
What the speaker identifies is a human desire for meaning. Despite the claims of early Derrida and recent “advances” in science, human beings long for meaning, whether it is actually there or not. Some of us waste that desire seeking out a collection of consumable products or hedonistic frivolity to quench our thirst for meaning. Those things need not be the ends of our desires, however.
Self-absorption is not the only barrier to digging our our buried lives, however. Conversely, some expend their divine longings by assembling a life built on ostensibly good things like family, community, and religion. But these things as ends unto themselves are also inadequate. Indeed, the poem asks,
Alas, is even Love too weak
To unlock the heart, and let it speak?
So what are we to do? What is the point? The point is that there is a point. And too many people miss it.
Those who wish to confine our lives to the mathematics of particle accelerators and the pre-destination of chemistry will not agree with the transcendence this poem conceives of. But, “The Buried Life” suggests that there is something inside each of us, a “true self” that awaits discovery. The notion that the essence of our lives is arbitrary and constructed is an alien one to Arnold here. Yes, much of what we do with our time “in the world’s most crowded streets” is arbitrary and lived entirely in the “din of strife,” but this poem offers a bleak, distant hope that there is an objective beauty to be grasped and experienced. That there is a purpose each of us is born to.
Yet — and this is what can be debilitating — this quest can never be fulfilled and we are therefore Sisyphus, forever pushing that rock uphill. This is the act in which we must find our joy.
I think I must be drawn to this poem at this moment because I’ve seemingly found my calling, the life that was buried in my breast all along.
And yet.
What can explain the fact that these words resonate with me in a manner that destroys any comfort I might otherwise rest in?
But often, in the din of strife,
There rises an unspeakable desire
After the knowledge of our buried life;
A thirst to spend our fire and restless force
In tracking out our true, original course;
One general critique of Arnold’s liberal humanist project is that it closes down free inquiry. It’s deference to “the best that’s been thought and said” is usually cited as an unthinking dedication to tradition. I think that this is a reductionist interpretation, if not patently false. The speaker in this poem sees life as a never ending, beautifully tragic inquiry. There is no comfortable resting on laurels. The philosophical position this poem takes is, I think, consistent with Arnold’s body of poetry and criticism, and it refutes the naive simplicity imposed upon his reputation by the dogmatists of European philosophy. If anything, Arnold provides a tortured, restless window from which to experience the world. It does not allow for confidence or privilege. It requires eternal introspection, all the while knowing that there is no depth at which the answer will be revealed. The poem states this flatly:
Into the mystery of this heart which beats
So wild, so deep in us — to know
Whence our lives come and where they go.
And many a man in his own breast then delves,
But deep enough, alas! None ever mines.
The Blessed Assurance that Arnold is accused of peddling is certainly not evident in these lines. This is a philosophy instead more attuned to the Romanticism of Bruce Springsteen. The ‘Burns and The Boss each find the beauty and truth of life in the Darkness on the Edge of Town. My own attraction to this poem at this moment can probably be traced to my desire to maintain touch with that landscape and the inspiring uncertainties that reside within. Only they can provide a goal worthy of my own “fire and restless force,” spent endlessly trading in my wings on some wheels.
In fact, Springsteen’s “Thunder Road,” perfectly captures the spirit of Arnold’s poem.

This sounds rather terrifying and hopeless, I know. “The Buried Life,” however, like Springsteen’s song, also provides a flash of hope that makes the uncertain risks worth taking. Arnold writes:
Only — but this is rare —
When a beloved hand is laid in ours,
When, jaded with the rush and glare
Of the interminable hours,
Our eyes can in another’s eyes read clear,
When our world-deafen’d ear
Is by the tones of a loved voice caress’d—
Rare though it may be, I have experienced enough of this exhilaration to keep me energized for the endless journey. Like Mary in Springsteen’s great epic, my own Beloved’s hand has offered me the clear vision that reveals the Buried Life. The poem’s last three lines describe that experience:
And then he thinks he knows
The hills where his life rose,
And the sea where it goes.
The brief glimpses of “the point” of my life are what exhilarate me and make me eager for my own time spent in Springsteen’s Edge of Town. I have a beloved wife and family that give me this perspective, and I also have great art. All of us have this; it is our cultural inheritance and we need only claim it. Arnold’s poem, ending as it does with this promise of vision, offers “an air of coolness,” a reason to risk excavating the Buried Life. The poem itself is a “beloved hand” that is “laid in ours.” This is what Judy gave me when she passed her book down to me. This is why we shouldn’t be so bold as to laugh off the best that’s been thought and said.

Poetry Time by Harlon Rivers

Whispers of the heart
swirl in the sanguine breeze
words sung of the soul
breathe love's never-ending song ...

Standing Barefoot on Rocky Ground ..... a long journey's reprise

Come walk with me a mile ...
Walk on without our burden’s weighty shoes ,
warily trudging over the long rocky
pathway of a lifetime in my soul ;
a final edifying voyage to freedom .
The winds of change are blowing briskly
as we walk charily over the long
rock-strewn passageway.

I shed these boots and skin, no longer fitting
my scared, blistered and callused soles .
As time slowly passes ,
this craggy terrain has evolved
from a two-way passageway,
into one-way jagged forage …

Standing barefooted and naked on rocky ground ,
dark sunken sleepless eyes scan
the rolling vista as the wind blows star dust
from the halo around the sun ,
blurring the delicate wispy cirrus clouds .

The sun’s radiance paints a frozen ice crystal azure
into a vivid aura of prisms’ glittering corona.
Kaleidoscope rainbows adorn the closest of solar stars .
There's something in the ethereal air
that leaves my soul unsettled ,
grasping for an allusive stability
as rumors of gold elude me ...

The pain and suffering has vanished
as if the body and soul have separated ,
numbness from the ache , severed nerves
sharp reflection on serrated rocky edges ,
deadened useless flesh cut to the bone
by misjudged obstacles encountered enduringly.

The barefooted spirit travels on ,
suffused in the solar spectrum’s dust ;
yearning , longing to saunter
above and beyond the bloated feathery pillows ;
cumulus clouds finally resting at peace .
Dipping these benumbed toes ,
heart’s weeping lesions
into a healing bath from the bowers of bliss ...

An unfinished life
of an open ended dream ,
reluctantly waking to take the last
surrendering steps  beyond the threshold ...
A long and winding rocky journey’s destiny
draws near

The halo around the sallow moon
illuminates an understanding firmament ;
the gloaming celestial sphere’s
pending imminent soulful rain awaits
the metamorphosis at the brink of dawn .

A shower of heaven's teardrops shall mourn
the loss of form as the spirit of soul lives on ,
barefooted ,
naked and free
like the dust in the wind
absorbed eternally...

I am the song from purling river bottom undulate currents
sung with a feral voice the river overflowing tears
awakened  to feel the ache a loneliness wash o’er
deep big eddy’s swirling macrocosmic churn

singingly soothing arrhythmic bouldered waters’ roll on
silently smoothing prehistoric igneous stone
temporal memories' artifacts fade away simpatico
like sedimentary fingerprints insipidly erode

river-song coursing sweetly rogue to and fro
ever changing undercurrents ebb and flow
rolling down the cascading wild riverbed winding-road
unchained from higher rocky  mountain’s forked throne

the river's hallowed confluence ; spellbound oceans' beck and call
drawn by enamelled yellow moon’s gathering push and pull . .
metamorphosis incarnates the highest mountain’s stone's throw
unto a single grain of distant shorelines’ heart and soul . . .

There are traces of you in the rainbow
Wisps of your vast colour palette, paint the mystical sky
The Song Sparrows’ song
reminds me of your melodic whistle in the summer breeze
The resolute silence your grounded soulful solitude implied.

There are traces of you in the rivers, where water falls from high
Where the ocean’s waves reach some distant shoreline
I hear the sound of your voice roar in the passing thunderstorm
Your love light shines like a moonlit troubadour.

There are traces of you in the garden
Many beautiful roses exposed your fragile side
Among the abundant blossoms, it’s effortless to imagine you here
Your peaceful spirit adorns this lovely space where love resides.

There are traces of you in the moonlit night
Glimpses of your shining heart are found in the infinite stars
Your aura is like the harvest moon’s angelic halo
A beacon of compassion for the indifference in other world’s apart.

There are traces of you in the early morning’s dew drops
In the amazing grace of the setting sun
Your thoughtful pondering evolved from life’s vast journey
An air of ardent calmness, quieting the fear and emotional fray inside.

There are traces of you in an old song
You fought for the light of truth with love,
With the fidelity of an iron fistful of mercy, in a velvet glove
The kind of muse that left me proud to be your son.

There are traces of your heart and soul
as your treasured memories grow afar
There are traces of your loving spirit in this smile
An ancient spiritual essence lives in every breath I take
Your devotion always walked with me the extra mile.

The merciful surrender of an unfinished journey,
Left traces of your verve in the depths of my soul
Those traces of love’s grasp make this life worth living
Infinitely, eternally, spiritually whole.

There are traces of you in this mirror
I see your vivid reflection in these eyes
Your every breath will always be cherished
Your life’s traces remain forevermore enfolded
within these teardrops in my eyes...

Memories of My Father's Traces ... a tribute to my father

His influence inspires me to constantly strive
to be  me a better human ...

"The mighty water falls...
landscapes this rivers great divide
Cascading walls of water soar and plunge...
From a silhouettes high and wide"
Centuries fleeting rivers flow
carved and shaped an ominous path
Fertile valleys hewn deep and wide
by raging waters wrath
This place was graced
through those centuries sage
My heart's ashes will rest strewn
where river waters yearn to pass"
...from "The River's Muse"

Red sky at morning ...  sailors take warning !!!
First dawn's light steals away over the towering Cascade Head.
A heavy autumn dew dripped from the Whaler's bow rails
as sun rays  flashed like beacons from rain-forest  headlands on high;
where Pacific Northwest rivers September equinox dawning ebb,
pushed us mercifully unto the chilling stiff autumn sea breeze.
Dappled sun reigning through the pinkish purple morning sky,
patchy fog adorning the awakening inshore headlands atop the bay,
shining from the pearly gate’s mission bells higher ground ,
beckoning another fisherman lost and found at sea come home...

Heaven’s lighthouse alerts the celestial sky
of the pending eminent soul journey,
highlighting the distant horizon’s
breaking swells capped of white meringue  sea foam.
Sea gulls escort precious cargo's final voyage ,
gliding gracefully in the shadows of the firmament ,
our lungs filled , revitalized with the salty air's poignant elixir
Pelican vanguard's white light reflection guiding our vessel seaward ,
alone in a perfect storm...

Northwest gales stand up the ebbing tide’s uprising crescents,
waves pounding in rhythmic flow;
calling all angels, my ruminating mantra
the Clatsop Spit’s dangerous song sounds the stark reminder,
life's raucous changing seasons, prevailing winds siren’s call,
that now is nearly here ...

The countenance of flowing salty tears' liberating release ,
vast ocean's raw sheets of saltwater spray would not hide .
He just sat and stared at the seaward horizon while the telltale tears flowed
perhaps a dream of a merciful final surrender with eyes wide open ,
love coursing our vessel west where sun shines to set ;
now far beyond the visible ache ,
for mine own eyes blur ... trepidation teardrops rained as sheets of sea
The wordless conversation known , the compass full circle drawn
like the sacred salmon's cycle ends to nourish back ancient sage unto its own ,
forever beginning life , eternally drawn through river estuaries
stirred by ebbing infinite tidal pull ...

There is an oppressive weight found within paternal understanding ,
and yet , as certain as the dawn promises the inevitable setting sun ;
all things must pass as sure as all things begin ,
someone you love mos t, longest in short life ,
has come forth to break bread at sea as the torch is passed ,
sharing life for the last time comes too soon with little warning..

There was an emotional unidentifiable hollow pang ,
as if letting go gradually, yet potentially instantly,
drains every last drop of a breaking heart ache ;
strength swallows sighs lumps in throats, words better left unsaid
only cleansing tears flow, knowing when they start to purge
they might not want to stop again.
This moment's final autumn’s changing season’s waning ebb
That final riptide will forevermore change all other rivers’ flow
where oceans set mother earth's rivers free until the end of time ...

My father ... a man's man who seemed to find a peaceful Zen ;
an unfinished life was reborn that day to see it through
as my hands grasped the wheel , compass held steady.
The son to carry on the weight of love and compassionate understanding,
taught love , caught love inspired the fortitude to carry on.
As a life flashed before my eyes on that final raging Pacific sea,
instincts mused by ancient Tyees’ souls stirred
new sun's radiant rays of perception ;  accepting this life on earth
would never be the same but would just simply be ,
knowing this light's shine will never glow quite the same again ,
yet radiate a more vivid luminosity...

We melded into that first day of Autumn,
falling silent , and yet our heads held high
There was nothing left to be done but pray with eyes wide open
“spirits of all oceans of mother earth …
show the sacred salmon the way to peaceful waters back home”
Few words were spoken as everything was silently said.
"To everything there is a season and a time to every purpose,
under Heaven"

The Outrage, knuckles white the wheel,
climbed mountainous long ocean swells
breaking over the giant boulder jetty ;
there rolls the mighty Columbia jaws ,
where all Rivers' confluence suffuse with vast oceans, eternally free ...
.... Harlon Rivers    .... September 22nd . 2013
With fondest loving memories of my father's life and times shared~
So much of this day's memory is deeply repressed and each year I try to free a little bit more but each year passed has been privately circle filed, yet I try again to be set free..   Purging emotions so intense that they are nearly blacked out...I have never tried to publish any memory of this day until now although I do find hints that come to me much later after publishing some creative writing, I did not realize the basis of depth until later private moments... It was in fact the day of the Autumn Equinox a few years ago,  a final birthday celebration of sorts combined with bringing the Boston Whaler Outrage, home.   Dad passed 1 week later after this trip from Pancreatic cancer ...we spend the final 72 hours alone together at Hospice after his birthday..."Crossing Over"

Whistles the poignant breeze
hummingbird’s whirr
whooshing throughout
twining honeysuckle lattice

woven rootlets hidden
beheld speckled eggs

potently perfumed flowers
while away the waning hours

waxing heavenly fragrance
sweetly-scented suckled nectar

the one with eyes of a child
imbibes the spellbinding waft

bedazzled by spring’s rustling whispers
in a reverent moment's
edifying intoxication

Crawling across the arid cactus wilderness
Chasing nothing but blue skied impossible dreams
He followed the utopia of a wild exotic river wide
Meandering effortlessly through his mind made mirage
Rippling downstream along sweltering cactus shoreline
Beneath the scorching azure desert sky
Flowing at the speed of loneliness
Fleeting towards the refreshing Ocean’s tide

He searched charily through a labyrinth of chimera
While standing deliriously on the brink a sublime
Spiny leaves awakened all sense of uncertainty
Mystic static air excites his sun wilted eyes
Enticing infinite reborn senses thrive alive
Rousing imagination’s magical archive reveries
Enkindling a cornucopia of inflamed reprise

A daydream of an erotic fragrant, vibrant flower
Pricking his heart with her natural delicate demure,
Drawing blood with her coquettish cactus quills
Tantalizing a figment a poignant hallucination's thrill
Inching slowly, slithering silently,
Sensibilities frayed, heart on his sleeve
Too thirsty to drink, once bitten, twice shy

Lingering at the crossroads of an exotic oasis
The illusion a nomatic basin river courses on
Zigzags, winds turning far, deep and wide
Swerves amongst mysterious tantalizing desert flora
Hidden bashfully behind a sun faded shadow's disguise,
Her taproot in a desert spring’s bedrock
Her beauty reflected in the shine twinkling in his eyes

A prairie wolf paces on the distant horizon
Vultures are gliding in the arid desert skies
Silhouettes gracefully soaring in hazy solar disguise
Coyote, was just listening to the ethers' muted sighs
The blustering wind howled the gathering dust
Blowing the drifting barren sand astir
Over the lonesome travelers’ trail of wanton lust
Caught-up in her sticky tangled web trying to free her

"Taunt and tease Prickly Pear blossom
Share the simple life of the prairie breeze
I’m crawling through pebbles and cobbles
Over bedrock through sand dune fields to the sea
Drawn to your fertile spring water oasis surprise
The thirst quenching splendors of your dalliance astir,
The impassioned esprit your abundant soul set me free"...

Poertry time

Sye

There were always ticking clocks
And a vase of wilting flowers:
The room seemed twice the size it was,
In my silent hours.

Waiting was my occupation,
Like the great Queen in her tower:
Lost my reason,
Not my head,
In my silent hours.

The more I tried, the more I died,
Lost my will and all my power:
Someday I’ll find someone to share
My silent hours.

How I long for a
cold glass of water
drawn from a well

I can't believe the
calluses that I've received
from those damn twist off caps

No matter how cold
bottled water may get
it's nothing compared
to water drawn from a well

How I crave a class of
cold water drawn from a well
while thinking of days
that are no more

~

I need to stand
at the edge of a river
imagining all my

       fears

            and

                anxieties

are passing by.

I would take a step back

         and     s
                       i
                         t

Silently

I would let them all

       drift

                g
                  e
                    n
                       t
                         l
                           y

noticing each one

letting
           it
             go

and just observe the distance.

Already they seem

   smaller

I can enjoy the

     'here and now'

sitting by the river

      and appreciate a taste

             of

                  inner peace

Silently

Silently it travels
Along this tree lined way
Shouldered by the softest green
Nature on display
~
Carved of destinations
Inviting is the scene
Heading off to nowhere fast
Lost inside a dream
