My Review
If you are not familiar with the book The Secret Garden, then read it before you read this book. It the most classic book on the shelf and I don't think it only foe children. As a girl I used to read and re-read it so many times that i know it's plot by heart. It is the main reason why I was happy to get this ARC for reviewing.
A Year in the Secret Garden is based on the original book, and it include recipes, fun crafts/activities and information. It is starting with beautiful introduction and goes along with month by month - character cutouts, recipes, instructions on how to make and do things just like in the book!
For each month, a character from the book (e.g., Mary Lennox, Dickon, Colin) is introduced and their role in the story is described. Each month also features a number of activities including planting activities, crafts, recipes, children’s games, as well as snippets of information about some of the themes covered in the story (e.g., death in Victorian England, language spoken in Yorkshire), and so much more!
Here is an example (see below) of September is the month the author focuses on India which is where Mary Lennox the heroine of the book was living before coming to Misselthwaite Manor and the secret garden.
I did love the explanations and history of what was happening. It is also deals with the themes from the original book, like Death in Victorian England.
I also loved the character studies, and the AMAZING illustrations! They are colorful, and really bring out the meaning of a book into life.

About the Illustrator: Marilyn Scott-Waters
Marilyn Scott-Waters loves making things out of paper. Her popular website, www.thetoymaker.com, receives 2,000 to 7,000 visitors each day, who have downloaded more than six million of her easy-to-make paper toys. Her goal is to help parents and children spend time together making things.
She is the creator of a paper toy craft book series The Toymaker’s Christmas: Paper Toys You Can Make Yourself (Sterling), and The Toymaker’s Workshop: Paper Toys You Can Make Yourself (Sterling). She is also the co-creator with J. H. Everett of the middle grade nonfiction series, Haunted Histories, (Christy Ottaviano Books / Henry Holt Books for Young Readers). Ms. Scott-Waters illustrated The Search For Vile Things (Scholastic), and created paper engineering for Pop & Sniff Fruit (Piggy Toes Press).

A brief article on A Year in The Secret Garden
The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett is a book about a lonely, cantankerous little girl who blossoms after finding the key to abandoned walled garden after moving to Misselthwaite, a mysterious estate in Yorkshire. Valarie Budayr and Marilyn Scott-Waters created A Year In The Secret Garden to help introduce this beloved children’s classic to a new generation of readers through recipes, games, and easy-to-make crafts.
One of the central themes of The Secret Garden is the restorative power of play and nature. The themes in the book, of friendship, exercise and positive thoughts, are as relevant for modern families as they were one hundred years ago. Kids today need more contact with nature, to make and do, not just consume. Children today spend most of their waking hours sitting at desks doing paperwork. A Year In the Secret Garden offers creative ways to get families out of doors, spending time together in “the big, blue room”
For the winter months there are also indoor activities, like recipes for parkin cake, the northern English version of gingerbread.
