I never understood the phrase there’s a thin line between love and hate, until Dallas Wesson and I, became us.
The beautiful green-eyed biker with the broken soul tantalizes me with glimpses of the man behind the vest. He‘s gravity. I have no choice but to return to him, regardless of what it costs me. Our story is messy, unconventional, uninhibited, and insane. Still, it’s real, and until now it’s always been more than enough. I’m broken, bleeding out, and completely wrecked. I walk away. Yet, he refuses to let me go. Because no matter how much I resist him we both know what lies between us is for always.
Content Warning:  Graphic language, violence, and sexual/erotic material

Excerpt:

I loved Dallas Wesson my entire life in some form. My earliest memories are of me toddling around after him at family picnics, and the old ladies homes. They were our surrogate mothers, and babysitters when our fathers were gone on those long rides. I think I cried when he started school and left me behind. So I suppose, it was no surprise when that love took on a mature tone. I never saw anyone else. What chance did a high school boy have when I grew up with a green-eyed Greek god who protected me from everything? None.
When I hit womanhood at thirteen, and the estrogen began to flow liked popped champagne, i began to see him in a whole new light. Watching the endless parade of women he had hurt. Each one was a tiny slice to my heart and a knock to my self-esteem. It’s messed up what your mind can do when you’re a pre-teen with a case of unrequited love like whoa. I was desperate to grow up fast. If I’d known then all the things that came with being Dallas Wesson’s woman, I would’ve pumped the brakes. But it wouldn’t have mattered. Fate has a way of bringing us together no matter what bullshit life threw at us. Each crisis averted and overcame bound us tighter, until eventually, I understood for me it would be Dallas Wesson, always.

Love is a funny thing. It doesn’t guarantee happily-ever-after, or an easy way to go. Soul mates mean even when you should hate someone you can’t give up on them. Even if it’s what’s best for you. It makes you stupid, and more giving than you could ever imagine feeling. It’s the spell that falls over you and makes you do things you swore you never would. I never understood the phrase, there’s a thin line between love and hate, until Dallas Wesson and I became us.

    A Cover Reveal

    for
    Twelve
    by T.M. Franklin
    Twelve-3D-Paperback
    Release Date: October 9, 2014

    SUMMARY

Twelve-3D-BookstackAva Michaels is gifted, powerful, and—whether she likes it or not—part of a plot to take over the world.

It’s only been a few months since Ava Michaels discovered she has ties to an ancient people living in the shadows of the human world, despite their superior gifts and abilities. A select few don’t like hiding, however, and think it’s time to take control.

Now Ava’s caught up in a conspiracy in the works before she was even born. In fact, her birth was an integral part of the plan. She’s one of the Twelve, the most powerful Race ever created, and they were created for a purpose.

Ava, however, doesn’t like being told what to do.

All she wants is to start a new life with Caleb Foster, the Protector who once put his own life at risk to save hers. Before they can even think about that, however, they need to figure out exactly what the Twelve and their power-hungry leader are up to—and find a way to stop them.

Along the way, they’ll have to forge alliances with former enemies, seek out powerful new friends, and infiltrate the heavily fortified enemy stronghold in an attempt to get some answers. In the end, Ava must decide if her destiny lies in her DNA or in her conscience. If she can turn her back on what she was born to do and do what is right. If she will save the ones she loves or save the world.

Or if her ties to the Twelve mean she has no choice at all.

     Excerpt

She sat up suddenly and grabbed Caleb’s hand. “Do you feel that?”

“What?” He instinctively checked the mirrors, but there was nobody behind them.

    “Someone . . .” Ava’s eyes glazed over. “Someone’s coming. Fast.”

Caleb stepped on the gas, searching the horizon. “Who? Anyone familiar?”

    “What’s happening?” Sophie asked.

Ava shook her head. “I can’t tell. Not yet anyway. You think it’s Protectors?”

    Caleb’s jaw tightened. “Or Rogues.”

“You think they know?” Ava glanced at Sophie.

“We don’t know. Not for sure.”

“Would somebody please tell me what’s going on?” Sophie shouted from the backseat.

The temperature in the car dipped as frost formed along the edges of the windows.

“You’ve got to calm her down,” Caleb muttered, taking a turn too fast and swerving to correct.

    “Now.”

Ava didn’t argue, instead scrambling over the seat to take the girl’s hand. “Sophie, listen to me. You need to stay calm, okay? Try to breathe with me.”

    “But—”

“I’ll explain everything, but first you need to calm down. You see what’s happening?”

Through the mirror, Caleb saw her glance up at the roof of the car as snowflakes began to drift through the interior.

    “I . . . I don’t understand,” Sophie murmured. “What’s—why is it snowing?”

“It’s you,” Ava said quietly. “You’re upset, and your gift is reacting.”

“I don’t understand what’s happening to me.” Sophie choked on a sob, and Caleb felt the telltale prickle of another Race signature along the edges of his consciousness.

“I feel them now,” he said, sitting taller in the seat and leaning forward as if willing the car to go faster.

Ava didn’t respond but remained focused on Sophie.

Caleb felt Ava’s gift and knew she was letting it flow into the girl a little, helping calm her.

“We’ll help you.” Ava sounded so calm and soothing. “We’ll help you learn to control it, but for right now, you need to calm down. Breathe with me, okay?”

Sophie nodded and swallowed tears as she tried to match Ava’s inhale and exhale.

    The snow stopped.

“That’s good.” Ava nodded encouragingly. “Keep breathing. I need you to stay calm. Someone’s coming, and I’m guessing they’re after you.”

Sophie’s breath caught, and the ice gathering on the dashboard cracked.

“It’s okay,” Ava hurried to say. “Keep breathing. Stay calm. We’re going to keep you safe.”

Sophie gripped Ava’s hand, but she kept breathing slowly in and out. “How?”

Ava smiled. “You asked what I could do? Well, I’m about to show you.”

    Excerpt

Keith Hurst’s secure telephone rang, waking him from a sound sleep. He opened his eyes and looked at the LED clock on his nightstand. It said 3:12. As national security advisor to the president of the United States, middle-of-the-night calls were common. His staff did their best to filter out the less important matters until his morning brief, but there were times when an emergency forced sleep into second place.
Hurst grabbed the handset by the second ring. He had to wait for the encryption to handshake before he could say, “Hurst.”
“Good morning, sir. This is the night watch officer. We have several NSA intercepts from the following countries: India, Pakistan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, and Russia all placing their militaries on high alert. We’ve had sporadic reports of multiple air, car, and rail accidents, resulting in thousands of deaths. Many radio and television stations have gone off the air in those countries.”
Hurst snapped on his bedside light and sat up. “Accidents? Do we know the cause?”
“No, sir. The strange thing is, NSA claims many of the foreign military units that were signaled never acknowledged the alert. There also appears to be a major communication disruption with U.S. CENTCOM units in Afghanistan and our embassies in the aforementioned countries.”
“Are the comms being hacked, or is there some sort of natural phenomenon like sunspot interference?” Concerned about the call, Hurst looked at the empty space beside him. His wife had left him several years before, directly because of the election campaign and the late-night calls.
“No, sir. Not that we can see. The circuits are up, and the phones are ringing, but no one is answering.”
Hurst swung his legs out of bed. Has someone come up with a way to simultaneously disrupt communications with American bases, embassies, and headquarters, or is this some sort of terrorist attack? “Does NRO have anything on overhead imagery?”
“No, sir. No major troop movements in the CENTCOM area. In fact, NRO reports minimal movement overall.”
“I’ll be in the office in thirty-five minutes. I’ll want everyone in for an early brief for the president. Get the joint chiefs and SECDEF up to speed. Warn the Secret Service that we may be moving POTUS with short notice. If this is an attack, I want to stay ahead of it. See if we can get drone surveillance of any U.S. bases in Afghanistan ASAP. We need answers.”
    “Yes, sir.”
Hurst hung up and hit the bedside crash button to summon his protection detail. This was no time for subtlety. He needed to be in the White House as soon as humanly possible.

    Irradiated

    By S. Elliot Brandis

    Sci-Fi (Post Apocalyptic / Dystopian)

    Date Published: May 12, 2014

A man thrust a baby into Jade’s hands. It trembled in her arms. The man had a message: escape from the tunnels and never return, her parents were already dead. Jade had a sister; she was irradiated.

Thirteen years later, her sister, Pearl, is coming of age. Rows of sucker-caps line her arms and hands. Her skin is coral pink. Each night, her dreams fill with visions of violence, depression, and fear.

On the surface, people have grown wild and dangerous. They scavenge, fight, and steal. Below, in the tunnels, they're controlled by a ruthless leader and an army of beings known only as Shadows. When both groups come searching for Pearl, sensing the power her dreams may hold, only Jade can stand in the way.

    Excerpt

A man stood before her, haggard and gaunt. He had a scraggly beard the color of sand and bark, and wide, fluid eyes that sat askew, one too high and one too low. One arm was pinned to his body and the other dangled loosely. His expression was glazed and desperate.

When Pearl saw him she froze. Her stomach clenched and her body tightened, unable to decide whether to vomit or run.

“You’re Pearl,” said the man in a gravelly voice. It was a statement not a question.

Pearl’s lips twitched when she tried to speak, but she was unable to. Her pink face drained white.

“I’ve come lookin’ for you,” he said. “I’ve seen you in my dreams.”

    Excerpt 2

    Birth

The man thrust a baby into Jade’s hands. It was warm and wet and its cries were muffled. Thick fabric covered its face and body. It trembled in her arms.
“You have to go,” said the man. His voice was urgent and his movements were rapid. Each breath was hot and laboured.
    “I don’t understand. Where’s Mum, where’s Dad?” Jade asked.
The tunnel was dark but she could place him by the sound, by the heat, by the air. His panic rushed into her, as though it was her own. He grabbed her with heavy hands and turned her around.
“There’s no time,” he said. “No time, child. They’re coming. The Shadows are coming. You need to get out of here.”
“B-But, what about my parents?” she stammered.
The man squeezed her shoulders tightly, his fingers digging into her muscles and between her bones.
“I’m sorry,” he said. “They’re dead. You have to trust us. This is your only chance. This is your sister’s only chance. You have to keep going and never turn back.”
He pushed her onward, and other hands grabbed her. They grasped her then passed her on to the next set. They all knew what was happening, all knew where she was headed—everybody but her. She clutched the squealing baby in her long, thin arms and yielded herself to their guidance.

Jade had a sister; she was irradiated.

It’s not all bad: Tips for writing interesting villains.

I have a confession to make: I enjoy writing antagonists. In fact, it’s one of my favourite things. Does that make me evil? Why, no. In fact, you’re making a mistake if you think the ‘bad guys’ are evil, either. Sound confusing? Let me share some tips with you.
    1.    Give your villains understandable motives.
Everybody is the hero of their own story. This may sound misleading, but think about it for a moment. People aren’t evil for the sake of being evil. Nobody sets out to be bad. In fact, they usually think that their actions are the right thing to do. They may be misguided, deranged, or even mad, but at the heart of it they believe in their actions. And that’s what makes our skin crawl.
In my novel Irradiated the underground tunnels are ruled by a woman known only as The Queen. She does some despicable things, including torture and murder. But she has a cause—to her, the ‘irradiated’ (people who have had their genes mutated by the sun) are a threat to humanity. If allowed to live and prosper, she thinks, then it will lead to our own extinction. The more compelling a person’s reasons, the more extreme their actions. The Queen is frightening, but she’s also understandable.
By considering your antagonists motives, you can make them complex and intriguing.
    2.    Consider giving your villain sympathetic elements.
If you give your antagonists understandable motives, which compel them to do ‘bad’ things—it creates a feeling of uneasiness for the reader. You can counter-balance that by giving reasons for the reader to feel sympathetic for the villain, too. This can create an interesting dynamic.
Think of Magneto, from the X-Men series. We see his past and it’s tragic—his parents are killed in a concentration camp when he’s a boy. We know where his anger and mistrust stems from. Yet, when he tries to kick-start a war between mutants and humans, we don’t cheer him on. We want to see him overcome, but we understand him, and to a degree, we even sympathise with him. And it makes him a fascinating bad-guy.
So, you might want to consider playing with balance between hatred and sympathy. It can create an intriguing dynamic.
    3.    Let your villain come out on top, but only sometimes.
The problem with a lot of fiction is that we know the outcome at the start—we know the ‘good guy’ will win and the ‘bad guy’ will lose. Do your best to shake off this feeling. I’m not saying you need to let your antagonist come out on top, but the prospect should seem possible, perhaps even likely.  Make them fear the worst. This tension will drive your readers forward, in the quest to see what happens. When millions of people dived into the final Harry Potter book, they didn’t know if Harry would live or die.
You may also consider giving your villain victories. Nothing tears out hearts more than seeing evil win. Look at some of the biggest moments in the fiction you love—be it novels, comics, movies, or television. Last year we saw the death of Batman’s son, the current Robin. We saw The Red Wedding on Game of Thrones. These moments hurt, yet we’re drawn to them. Increasingly, we're seeing stories where nobody is safe, and the antagonists have multiple victories. And when the good moments come, they feel even better.
By giving your villain moments of success, you can ramp up the tension and emotional payoff.
