Thx netgally for the opportunity.... I find myself falling in love with Pippa again.
I
am glade to return to some more sc fi books and since Isaac Asimov,
wrote the classic collection of stories of the Robot novel series, I
didn't put much attention to this kind of books. In his books Asimov,
deals with the relationships between human and robot. and for this
purpose he introduced us to the Three Laws of Robotics-
1) A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm;
2) A robot must obey the orders given it by human beings, except where such orders would conflict with the First Law; and
3) A robot must protect its own existence, as long as such protection does not conflict with the First and Second Laws.
However,
Pippa didn't deal with robot she is telling us about something totally
different a Synth - A synthetic body with the soul and memories of the
person who paid a lot of credit to get a “life-ever-after” created by
Chitec (who supposed to have made one thousand synths, five hundred male
and five hundred female, so how did #1001 exist?)
Ok, it is not
exactly robot, as its body construct of tissues, it is also not an
android , which its body has real tissues over artificial skeleton,
mind, heart and such... I believe that the idea was to give something
less destructible then regular human tissues.
The big difference
between an android or robot and Synth was suppose to be that they had a
real imprinted personality of a live person. The problem is that 1000
Synth actually didn't got it they only had some makers from the
person....this is a one fat lie that Chitec sell to the world.
Chitec
purpose wasn't to protect humanity from their creations like Asimov
with his robots. Their idea was to build an Army...it isn't a mere whim
that the privilege to turn to a Synth cost so much....Only very rich and
important people could afford this kind of thing.
So Chitec actually had their creations in very important key positions waiting to as they command - sleeping soldiers.
Synth
#1001- wasn't suppose to exits..a “synth” somebody turned to a vicious
killer.... the problem it is the only synth that has memories, which
mean that it is the only synth that really had imprinted personality and
somebody sent her to kill.
The person she suppose to kill is
treating the existence of Chitec. He also has connection to a rebel
underground of the nine Fenrirs ( Yes it Norse myth).
The book
start from the end... and it's somewhat confusing....and then it goes
backward in time. It started with the killing of the head scientist of
Cimtec by #1001.
Then it move fast to Captain Caleb Shepperd's
ship. Cleb released from Asgard prison and all he wants to do is keep
his head down and earn a living smuggling illegal cargo through the nine
systems. So when he found a synth stows away on his ship, the problems
start to pile.
the weird thing was that he really really don't
want to know anything about her. He has guilt-ridden secrets he thought
he’d escaped. The best thing to is to toss this very hot potato out the
airlock. The problem is, she’s priceless tech, and he’s fresh out of
credit.
Caleb is a typical anti-heroe, one with an ambiguous
moral code. His only love in life is his independent tug ship, the
Starscream. Most of the time he is live on the edge, to forget. This
external projection is misleading - Once upon a time he was the
brightest promise of the fleet, so under all this hiding a very smart
person with a secret drive and agenda. he also survived Asgard - and
succeeded to escape it tow features that very few have in there records.
other characters -
Fran-
a character that i enjoy to not like. she is the best piolot in the 9
system and only because of that Clabe is still keeping her (certainly
not because her mouth of her attitude), maybe also becuase the sexual
tension between them. She mkeep him on a low burner. Caleb don't
understand what a talented, smart and sexy is doing with him at all. Not
one red light turn on about it.... he think that she has drug addiction
problem which will make a problem for her to find ob somewhere else.
Also, turn out he saved her, so maybe there is loyalty element too( he
don't know what a surprise is waiting for him there) and maybe that he
is the most tolerant captain ever, may would get rid from her and her
mouth long before.
Hayley- We don't see a much of her, only
glimpses here and there. But she's the stuff of heroes! she smart, and
sad, and kind, and brave and just a little naive. She was the daughter
of the CEO of Chitec, and love Caleb with all her heart, but he betrayed
her....and she is the source of his guilt... her personalty imprinted
in #1001
#1001- somebody change the restrictions orders in her
program (Failsafe disabled. Protocols breached.). This change turned her
to a killer 9You follow orders. You will only ever have one: to kill).
the one thing that the sander didn't took in account was that Hayley
personality can interfere... It is easy to think that anyone will seek a
revenge.... but Hayley personality has no appetite for this kind of
things 9Fault, fault, fault. This is wrong. I am not designed for this.
This isn’t me. Not me. Not me). And she know that she is not ready to
die.
Bernard - Caleb's brother... from the little you meet you don't get to like him and he betrayed Caleb too.
The
pacing is relentless and far from predictable, with a good few
surprises thrown into the mix as the story progresses and kept
immediately to the second book -
"Girl From Above: Escape"
