Excerpt:
Suddenly, the ship comes to a complete halt. Kaí-Ling and Joohee are thrust forward onto the floor. As they regain their senses, an eerie and uneasy feeling captivates the room. Kaí-Ling gazes over toward the window and sees a giant red eye staring in.She becomes entranced in the sadness that dwells deep down inside the soul of the eye’s beholder. A pain punctures her gut as the creature’s unhappiness is conveyed to her. For most of her life, Kaí-Ling held similar feelings. She looks down to make sure Joohee has not witnessed what she has. His face, still burrowing in his own grief is hung low. She sets him gently on her bed and looks back at the window, but the eye is gone.

A good friend of mine once shared the following story with me:One evening an old Cherokee told his grandson about a battle that goes on inside people. He said “My son, the battle is between ‘two wolves’ inside us all . . .One is Evil: it is anger, envy, jealousy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego.The other is Good: it is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion and faith. The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather: “Which one wins?”The old Cherokee replied: “The one you feed.”This is an inner battle that most of us struggle with on a daily basis. Speaking for myself, the “two wolves” inside me are regularly brawling with one another. There are some days when the evil wolf seems to be getting the upper hand. He is winning the battle because I am feeding him with things such as anger, lies, resentment and regret. It is during these times that I stop and read this story and reflect about things going on in my life. As a person of faith, I am always seeking to grow my belief and relationship with God. That's why I use this story as a model and tool to help guide me when I stray from the path that has been chosen for me.Kaí-Ling, the main character in my book entitled Battle Cry, also deals with the inner battle of the “two wolves.” However in her case the intensity is multiplied 10 times more than most. She embarks on a quest to right the wrongs that fate dealt her. Bent on vengeance, she seeks those who took her father from her. Unlike most children during that period of time, Kaí-Ling was unable to know her father’s love. This created a void in her life, allowing the flames of anger to build inside her as she grew up. The evil wolf inside Kaí-Ling is winning the battle and has been doing so for quite some time. This is not to say that she is always angry, all the time. She has her good and bad days like most of us. Yet, the inner battle of the “two wolves” continues to rage on. It is the added fuel that drives her. By seeking to vanquish those who caused her to live a life of emptiness, loss and pain, Kaí-Ling is continuously feeding the evil wolf. The question is will she let him win in the end?
