BBB: Tell us 3 things not in your bio we don’t know about you that might make us leery of befriending you. LOL
AS: I am OCD! I like everything to be in its place and organised but I am so busy writing it never is! I can’t ride a bicycle! I would love to time travel.
BBB: Do you have any strange writing habits (like standing on your head or writing in the shower)?
AS: Funny you should say that…I do my best plotting in the shower…or in a bubble bath…or by the ocean. There must be water involved!
BBB: What was the BEST book you read in 2013?
AS: Bella Andre’s Sullivans series.
BBB: What actors from the PAST (not living now) would you choose to play if Hot Rock were made into a movie or a TV show?
AS: Clark Gable…with long black curly hair would be Davy for sure!
BBB: How do you keep track of your world building?
AS: I keep track of everything in my head. I am very structured in my planning but it is all in my mind. Gets interesting when I am writing four books at the same time.
BBB: Please tell us more about Hot Rock and the storyline that drives it.
AS: Megan Miller is on a dream trip to research her doctoral thesis at Glastonbury in 2014. When she arrives in the village she’s stunned that her temporary neighbor is the spitting image of her 70’s rock idol but he is an absolute jerk to her. Despite that she can’t get him out of her thoughts especially when he plays her favorite music all night.
Seventies rock star Davy Morgan is a man with a secret: rockin’ in one time and living in another. He holds his privacy close to his heart, so when Megan moves in next door beautiful girl and truly understands his music, he works overtime to keep her at a distance. Easier said than done especially when she inadvertently follows him through the standing stones back to the 1971 Glastonbury festival.
Will their love survive through time?
BBB: How many more books there be in this world?
AS: Hot Rock began as a standalone but already readers are asking for more…I think there will be at least another two in this world.
BBB: Did you do any kind of research to determine the details of your characters lives / lifestyles?
AS: Absolutely. I am a historian…and my love or research and accurate fact drives my writing. Every fact in Hot Rock, to the placement of the stage by dowsing rods, and the donation of milk to the festival by a local farm is based on fact. I also researched 1970s musicians and the hippie culture as I wrote the story. I would have loved to have been at the festivals!
BBB: Are you a plotser or a pantser? or a Planster (a combo of both – lol)
AS: I am what I call an organic writer. When I began writing three years ago, I soon learned that the way I usually approached the craft of writing was defined as being a ‘panster’ or a seat of the pants writer. This approach served me well for my first few books and these books were quickly contracted by publishers. I spent a lot of time pondering these questions but I continued to write using the same process until the day I was contracted to be part of a continuity series.
(The Emerald Quest series will be published by Entangled Publishing in March 2015.)
With this series I am working with four other authors in five books that span three centuries and have a common theme and characters. So I have had to plot and plan, I had to have characters that would remain consistent because they were appearing in other books. I couldn’t change the events of my books as subsequent events in later books depended on my first book. I had to provide a detailed synopsis to my editor.
BBB: Hot Rock is a time slip novel. What was the most difficult aspect of juggling two different time periods?
AS: Making sure that it was believable and that the time shift didn’t confuse readers. It took some juggling and I was really happy with how it panned out in the end. I have a fabulous editor at Entangled Publishing (Erin McCormack Molta who works with me on a few of my books and Erin helped me tweak the time slip details so the transition was seamless. The fabulous reviews the book has received have shown that readers found the time shift easy to follow.
BBB: What types of characters can readers expect in your world?
AS: Human beings who can cross time.
BBB: Do you ever come up with anything so wild that you scare yourself, that leaves you wondering where that came from?
AS: When I get in the zone and words flow…I can lose my sense of time and sometimes it is difficult for me to come back to my real world.
BBB: Who is your top book boyfriend or girlfriend?
AS: Roarke in J D Robb’s In Death series. Swoon…
BBB: What’s coming up for you in 2014?
AS: I am very busy at the moment. I am beginning edits for my second Half Moon Bay series book, and I’m halfway through writing Book three. I am also writing the first book in the Emerald Quest continuity series as well as a single title romantic thriller set in Kakadu National Park in Australia. I have a deadline for Seductive Secrets, the prequel to Dangerous Desire. The second book, and now the third book after Hot Rock is percolating in my mind. Since Hot Rock was released in February, I have received many emails from readers who want a Hot Rock series, I am going to have to write more to keep my readers happy and my characters finding their happily ever afters.
