BBB: Have you ever had second thoughts or regrets after killing off a main character?
TA: I don’t tend to kill off many characters–yet! I have killed off more minor characters in one of my series (From the Files of the Otherworlder Enforcement Agency). I don’t regret it as I try not to kill off a character unless think it’s necessary for the story. Those books are about paranormal cops, so it’s natural they have a little violence.
BBB: How do you keep track of your world building?
TA: Unfortunately, mostly in my brain. This usually leads me to have to reread chunks of my own books when writing a series. I always assume I’ll remember everything. You’d think I’d have learned better by now, but you’d be wrong.
BBB: Please tell us more about Don’t Blackmail the Vampire and the storyline that drives it.
TA: Don’t Blackmail the Vampire is about a young woman, Rachel, who is trying everything she can think of to drive a wedge between her sister and her sleazy soon-to-be brother-in-law, Brent. At the same time, vampire Charles is trying to get close Brent because he suspects the man is making threats against someone he views as family. They (reluctantly) join forces after Rachel catches Charles in a toothy position and blackmails him into helping her. Skiing, dogsledding, and hijinks ensue.
BBB: How many more books will there be in this series?
TA: I am planning on at least two more books. However, there may be three if I can pin down a story that really sings for one of the characters I’d like to explore.
BBB: What sets Don’t Blackmail the Vampire apart from other books in the same genre?
TA: Don’t Blackmail the Vampire is more lighthearted than most of the books I’ve read in the paranormal romance genre. If you’re in the mood for something a little funny and warm, but with a paranormal twist, then you might enjoy these books.
BBB: What types of creatures/characters can readers expect in your world?
TA: Vampires only. Not that I don’t love other types of beasties (as you can probably tell from my other books!), but these books are focused more on the characters and their growth rather than the world building, so I’ve kept the types of creatures minimal.
BBB: Did you do any kind of research to determine the details of your characters lives / lifestyles?
TA: The coolest thing I researched while writing this book was dogsledding. I wish that I’d had the opportunity to actually try it, but I had to settle for checking out sites and watching videos.
BBB: Are you a plotser or a pantser? or a Planster (a combo of both)
TA: I’m a planster who tries to be a plotster. (Try to say that three times fast!) This varies by book, too. Some books I’m able to plot in more detail before I get going on them, but with others I have feel my way through the story. Most of the time, I work off a loose outline.
BBB: What’s the best thing that anyone said to you when you were in a writing low spot?
TA: You’re a pro. You got this. (Not 100% sure I agree with this everyday, but it made me feel better.) I also like to read some of Chuck Wendig’s writing posts and pretend he’s telling me specifically to get my butt in gear. haha
BBB: Do you set a daily word count goal, time limit goal, or just go with the flow?
TA: I do try to set a daily word goal. While that doesn’t always work for me, it helps. My butt stays in my chair regardless of how I’m feeling that day. Words tend to come eventually, one way or another.
BBB: What’s coming up for you for the rest of 2014?
TA: I have an as of yet unannounced book series starting up later this year that I’m working on now. It’s in a new-to-me subgenre, which I’m really excited about. I will also be working on the next Sons of Kane book.
BBB: What was the BEST book you read in 2013?
TA: One book? Nope. Can’t do that. Some of my favs from last year are Dark Places by Gillian Flynn, House of Sand and Secrets by Cat Hellisen, and Kristen Callihan’s Darkest London books. Oh, and I discovered Nalini Singh and Nina Croft and…you know what, this could go on forever.
