BBB: Tell us 3 things not in your bio we don’t know about you that might make us leery of befriending you. LOL
VP: Hm, let’s see. I am a HUGE football – NFL, not soccer – fan so during the fall things tend to get a bit crazy at my house. I primarily follow the Houston Texans for those who are curious.
Number two, hm, oh! I know! I tend to go a mile a minute as in I am always running until I sit down to write. With a few jobs and two kids I don’t know any other way to be so catching me for drinks or dinner or whatever is rather difficult.
This is tough, number three would have to be my fangirl status. I find my fandoms expanding over the years and having kids has made it so much worse. One convention and I’ve created two monsters who have looped me into Doctor Who and pushed me so much further into LOTR/The Hobbit and Marvel Comics.
BBB: Do you have any strange writing habits (like standing on your head or writing in the shower)?
VP: LOL! I love this question! I probably have more than I know and I’m sure my kids could name them off for you but I do tend to talk to myself, pace a room with a pen or pencil in my mouth (even though I type when I’m writing), and do yoga while talking scenes out.
BBB: Have you ever been in trouble with the law?
VP: Does a speeding ticket count? I got one when I was in college, other than that I’ve been too sneaky with my shenanigans.
BBB: What actors from the PAST (not living now) would you choose to play some of your characters if Ryder on the Storm were made into a movie or a TV show?
VP: Storm is easy. Vivien Leigh would have been phenomenal as Storm Sullivan. I don’t think I could see anybody else in that role. She is one of my favorite actresses of all time and not just because of Gone With the Wind. I think I would have liked Audrey Hepburn as Trin Sullivan and Marilyn Monroe as Damarra. I love so many actresses from that era. For the guys it was a little more difficult. I landed on Laurence Olivier as Ryder, Henry Fonda as Lucian, and Bela Lugosi as Roane. I would have loved to see Cary Grant and Gene Kelly as the Seraphs, Dan and Shane. Yum.
BBB: How do you keep track of your world building?
VP: I have so many stories running through my head at any given time but I try to work on just two at a time, one set in a modern era and the other more fantasy based. I also keep notes and sketches in my journals to keep things straight.
VP: Storm Sullivan is a Seer – think legitimate psychic with some extra mystical abilities – who returns home when her Aunt Trin is murdered. Her intent is to solve her aunt’s murder but of course nothing is that simple. I won’t give too much away but she meets a gorgeous Immortal and discovers that her family has more secrets and most and some of them could very well mean her demise.
VP: There are four full length novels and one novella that serves as Emerald Seer 2 ½ in a way. I have a few short stories waiting in the wings and one of the characters in this series is getting a spin off trilogy.
BBB: Did you do any kind of research to determine the details of your characters lives / lifestyles?
VP: I researched Celtic lore for the character of Damarra and a few others that come later in the series. I drew a good deal from places I’ve been and things I’ve experienced for this series. I lived in Seattle for two years so some of the scenes in Light My Fire are very true to real places there. I did not do as much research for this series as I’ve done for other pieces though.
BBB: Are you a plotser or a pantser? or a Planster (a combo of both)
VP: I am definitely a plantser. I have excellent intentions of being a plotser but it just does not work out for me. My characters are really important to me and while I may have something in mind they often go in entirely different directions so I learned to let them do what they do. I know what roadblocks I want them to face and how I want things to end, but other than that I skip the outlining phase.
BBB: What types of creatures can readers expect in your world?
VP: Aside from Seers and Immortals, readers will meet Seraphs, Witches, Fairies, Banshees, Vampires (that do not sparkle), and even a Phoenix (though not in the Harry Potter sense).
BBB: Do you ever come up with anything so wild that you scare yourself, that leaves you wondering where that came from?
VP: Yes. Actually, I have this story idea that will not go away but is so incredibly dark that not only do I not know where it came from but I am almost afraid to write it and put my name on it. It could be brilliant if I have the courage to write it.
BBB: What’s coming up for you in 2014?
VP: I am hoping that 2014 will be a big year because I have huge plans. Aside from doubling my convention appearances I have plans to release my first Steampunk novel, Immortal Machinations. I’d like to have it out before summer and bring out the sequel around Christmas unless I scrap all of my plans and make it one massive book. I’m working with my daughter on a few projects and I have my choose-your-own-romance story on Wattpad that I hope to expand on. I am sure some other things will come up over the course of the year – they always do!
