Friends To Lovers and all the Hoopla In Between One premise I’ve always loved in romance novels is the friends to lovers scenario because the connection is so obvious and yet the hero and heroine are so oblivious. The reality is there’s no one that knows you better, has already disregarded your issues, big and small and still keep showing up for you day in and day out. And when he happens to be a totally hot and decent guy, why not?
I remember watching My Best Friend’s Wedding for the very first time and being extremely disappointed when Julia Roberts did not get Dermot Mulroney. I was actually ready to reach through the screen and choke Cameron Diaz. Of course, I watched the movie a few more times and reconciled with the ending. But wouldn’t Julia and Dermot have made a spectacular couple?
There’s something also to be said for the instant that flicker of chemistry is lit between the friends, the moment they both finally get a clue. I love writing that moment, love having both of them say “ah, yeah, maybe we should”. They’re already totally committed to each other in one regard, why not explore another?
Of course, there’s the inevitable, “what if we break up, then we’ll hate each other”, but this is romance so I try not to think of that issue too much. I’d much rather they have this sort of awakening, then a blossoming into the best relationship of their life. The journey friends take into becoming lovers is a much deeper exploration than that of total strangers, because the hero and heroine are looking beyond everything they already know about this person to see if there’s something else, something just a little more intriguing.
Okay, the hero is probably looking at the girl he remembers as being flat-chested and tomboyish, while the heroine, is seeing the boy next door who used to pick his nose. Maybe they need a little push to imagine the possibilities years later when they both enter adulthood. He might figure “go for it” and kisses her when she least expects it. The kiss ignites a flame and wow, before you know it she’s decided to give him a chance because now he’s got all these gorgeous muscles and a killer smile. The progression begins as slow or fast as their personalities suggest and the final HEA is totally pleasing to everyone involved.
Whew, my heart’s beating faster just imagining that story.
