Welcome, from the vampire Phil…
So, you’ve come to celebrate the release of Marie’s new Serafina’s book? I’ll drink to that. Mind you, I’ll drink to just about anything, but I specially want to drink to this book because I’m in it.
No, I’m not the psycho sous-chef. Never cooked anything in my life, to be honest. Or in my death. I’m Phil and I’m a vampire, Scottish born if not Scottish made. I’ve no idea how I got involved with Serafina’s Psychic Investigations. Although I do remember when. I was sauntering down an Edinburgh street one night, looking for a tasty morsel as a vampire does, when I caught the scent of particularly appealing human blood. I sniffed out the owner of said blood – Serafina herself – being guarded like a bone by my old friend Blair who warned me off in no uncertain terms. I tried to bribe him – and Sera – with a particularly fine whisky, but neither of them would fall for it. Oh well.
Sera MacBride has since become my favourite human for many reasons, not least of which is, she makes Blair happy – no mean feat, you understand, because he’s a broody, moody bastard. Unlike myself. I discovered long ago that whisky improves the spirits wonderfully – at least for a while – and the beauty of vampirism is that no matter how much you drink, your brain and your liver repair themselves. Neat, eh?
Mind you, I don’t go through nearly so much whisky nowadays, having discovered other routes to happiness. But at the beginning of this story which Marie managed to ferret out and spill to the world, I confess I was a little bit lonely. Of course, I wasn’t really aware of it, since solitude is quite normal for a vampire.
What ISN’T normal for a vampire, is to hang out with humans, let alone to get mixed up in Sera’s ridiculous investigations – that’s how I almost burned to death last year and how the Founder started to notice me. Who’s the Founder, you ask? The very first vampire, thousands of years old, a sorcerer who discovered the secret of eternal life. Well, undeath. Blair taking up with a human seems to have aroused his suspicions. And Blair’s crime is nothing to what I’ve just done.
Anyway, the Founder’s a recluse – I never knew any vampire who’d met him, until I did. But Marie got that into the book too, along with how we encountered the psycho sous-chef – a fascinating person, I assure you! – and a kidnapped human child, and Linnie, of course.
Ah Linnie… What can I say about her? She’s brave, beautiful, funny, and her blood is… But these aren’t even the best, let alone the strongest things about her – you really need to read Marie’s book!
Hey, Rachel! Marie! Let’s give these good people a drink and get this party started! Can I ask our guests questions? They can ask me anything in return…
