BBB: Tell us 3 things not in your bio we don’t know about you that might make us leery of befriending you. LOL
MW: Let’s see…I am a HUGE fan of the ALIEN and PREDATOR films, and I know just about every line from them by heart. Same with Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. My kids hate it when we watch these films together, because I’m quoting everything. And, growing up, I used to pick the next path on Choose Your Own Adventure books, see that the choice led to some crazy end, then say to myself, “That’s what I was THINKING about doing, but now that I’ve thought about it, I’ll do option B.” And then…a third thing? Hmmmm…During football season, I have a Colts glass that is the only thing I will drink from. I wash it, of course, but I don’t drink from any other glass.
BBB: Do you have any strange writing habits (like standing on your head or writing in the shower)?
MW: I like to make the room as dark as possible, so I close all the blinds. I also have to listen to music, usually film scores or 80s pop and “Hair Bands.”
BBB: Have you ever been in trouble with the law?
MW: Excluding a few speeding tickets, and a lawsuit from my homeowner’s association over a gargoyle I put at the foot of my driveway, no.
BBB: What actors from the PAST (not living now) would you choose to play some of your characters if Hades’ Disciples were made into a movie or a TV show?
MW: Oh my…Well, I think River Phoenix would’ve made a good Paul in The Wide Game. James Gandolfini would’ve made a good Roger Hays from Poseidon’s Children. And, while not an actor, I would’ve loved to have had the late, great Jerry Goldsmith compose the scores to all of them.
BBB: How do you keep track of your world building?
MW: I take a lot of notes, and my pre-readers and editor help me out a lot. They’re very good at picking out inconsistencies.
BBB: Please tell us more about Hades’ Disciples and the storyline that drives it.
MW: Terrifying creatures exist all around us, hiding in plain sight. Ancient. Deadly. They gather in secret, conspiring, dreaming of nothing less than humanity’s destruction, and their numbers are growing. Earl Preston knows the danger all too well. After tangling with a horde of mythological sea monsters in Colonial Bay, he has been tasked with finding these beasts and exposing their plans whatever they may be. But Earl is not the only one with a mystery on their hands. At the very top of the world, Carol Miyagi has stumbled onto an artifact from Earth’s past, something magnificent held captive in a prison of ice and snow. Now, Carol and Earl must work quickly to decipher the will of the gods–a plot that defies imagination–and to stop their followers from carrying it out. They thought the nightmare was over, but they are about to discover that the horror has only just begun.
BBB: How many more books there be in this world?
MW: Two more books in the series proper, but there may be some other books or stories set in the same world at some future time. I love these characters, so I could see finding other things for them to do when all is said and done.
BBB: Did you do any kind of research to determine the details of your characters lives / lifestyles?
MW: Oh yes! I’m always doing research. I read about things constantly, and I talk to people who do the kinds of work my characters do.
BBB: Are you a plotser or a pantser? or a Planster (a combo of both)
MW: LOL…A Planster for sure. I plot a lot of it out, especially in the Legacy of the Gods series, but the characters have minds of their own, and they often take me down roads I had no intentions of exploring.
BBB: What types of creatures can readers expect in your world?
MW: I use creatures from various myths and folklore and give them a new spin. We have dragons, satyrs, crocodile-men, yeti, werewolves, “vampires,” shapeshifters, and even aliens.
BBB: Do you ever come up with anything so wild that you scare yourself, that leaves you wondering where that came from?
MW: Not when I’m writing it, but when I re-read something I’ve written later, I do wonder where it all comes from. Once, my son walked up to my laptop and read what I wrote the night before. He turned to me, shook his head, and said, “How do you sleep at night?” The truth is…I don’t know.
BBB: What’s coming up for you in 2014?
MW: After Hades’ Disciples, I have a new short fiction collection, Straightjacket Memories, due out in the fall. Writing wise, I’m diving into the third book in the Legacy of the Gods, Zeus’ Warriors.
