SNEAK PEEK OF PROLOGUE…“It’s over, Savannah.” My words are slow and measured. I know this isn’t going to go well, but I have no choice. I’m done.“What?” she asks, her voice nearing a shriek.Averting my eyes, I sign the credit card slip and start planning my exit. Some would say it is cowardly of me to dump a girl in public, but I say it’s just smart. I have no time or interest in a drawn out goodbye over a relationship that should have ended weeks ago.“You heard me. We had a good time, but it’s run its course. We both know it.”“No, I don’t know it. Is that why you took me out tonight? To dump me?”I glance around the room as curious patrons begin to notice the building drama.“Essentially, yes.” I stand and motion for her to join me, but she remains seated. This isn’t going to be as easy as I’d hoped. “Let’s step outside, Savannah.”“No. You can’t tell me what to do.” She crosses her arms like a spoiled child and glares at me.“Don’t make a scene,” I say through gritted teeth.I pull her by the arm in an attempt to escort her out. As soon as she stands, a smirk crosses her lips as the palm of her hand comes into direct contact with my face. The stinging sound resonates through the small restaurant dining room. I place my own hand over the tingling skin where Savannah just smacked the shit out of me. Looking around, I am greeted with interested and concerned expressions and I see the restaurant manager heading towards me, his lips pursed and brow furrowed. I look back at the woman who just thought it necessary to slap me in public.“I thought we had something!”“This is not the time or the place to discuss this.”“I think it is!” She pulls away from me. “Everyone,” Savannah loudly calls. “My boyfriend is breaking up with me!”I rub my forehead. Seriously? I don’t know when fuck buddy turned into boyfriend.“Sir, you’ll have to take this disturbance outside,” the manager says.“I’m trying.”“He’s done, he says!” she screams again. “What kind of man dumps his girlfriend in public?”“Sir!” the manager repeats.Frowning, I grab Savannah’s arm and drag her out the door.“How dare you embarrass me like that!”“Embarrass you? I’m the only who was humiliated. Tell me why, Brayden. Why wasn’t I good enough to keep?”I have a million reasons in my head, but they all end in the same result. Me and relationships don’t mix. The only reason Savannah lasted as long as she did was her creative games in the bedroom.SNEAK PEEK 2 –“This really sucks that you fell for someone and because of me it got all screwed up.”“You know what? This needed to happen with me and Mac. The only way to know the strength of a relationship is through testing it. This is our first trial and only time will tell if we make it past this. Whatever the outcome, it’s not your fault. It’s mine. I knew I was in a relationship and I really shouldn’t have let you stay.”“You were drunk. You did ask me to leave about five times and I ignored it. You also talked about Mackenzie nonstop and I ignored that, too. I knew you were in love with someone else.”“I never said I was in love with her.”“You did that night. I was lying against you and rubbing your chest and you said, ‘I love you, Kenzie’, so yeah, I knew.”“I said that?”“Clear as day. More than once.”I look down at the floor. “I didn’t know that.”“That you said it or that you are in love with her?”“Both.”“Your guard was down.”“Yeah.”“If she doesn’t take you back it wasn’t meant to be.”“I know.”“I’ll be waiting for you just in case.”----------------------------------------------------------------------------
SNEAK PEEK 3 – CONTAINS STRONG LANGUAGE AND SOME SEXUAL CONTENTFuck yeah. She is exactly what desire looks like. I have a feeling that every man she ever presents to will do whatever she says and possibly even the women. I am fool if I don’t hire her and insane if I do. I want to clap or shout or tear off her clothes.“Very nice. Is that an actual pitch you did?”“Yes, I worked on it last year before I transitioned to Health and Beauty. The company’s profits increased twenty percent in the two months the ad ran so it was very successful. They gifted me their entire collection as a thank you.”“That’s your personal collection?” There I go, asking stupid questions again.“Yes.”I take a deep breath to clear my mind of indecent thoughts. “That was well done. You are very competent at what you do and it’s obvious that I need you.”Mackenzie smirks. “I need you, too, Mr. James.”“My team needs you,” I correct.“Of course.”“What kind of salary are you looking for?”“I’m sure you can come up with something worthy of my talent.”“Give me a couple of days to see what I can do.”“I’ll wait.”“Good.” I finish my water. “I should go.”“If you must.”Oh yeah, I must. “Unless you have something else you’d like to show me.”A gorgeous smile appears on her lips. “I can’t give you everything all at once.”I walk towards the door and stick my hand out to shake hers. “It was nice meeting you. I’m very impressed with your work.”Mackenzie takes my hand and moves a little closer. “You haven’t even begun to see what I could do for you. If you take me on, I’ll be worth it. I assure you I’ll exceed your expectations.”“I have no doubt. Good night, Mackenzie Reed.” I’m thankful that words actually came out of my mouth.“Good night, Brayden James.”I walk back to my car. It’s obvious there is some serious sexual tension between us and I know I wasn’t the only one who felt it. The agency could use her, but I’ll have to be careful not to get caught up in something with her. I cannot be fucking around with associates. No matter how much I want to.Back at my place, I lie in bed and stare at the ceiling. I completely lost my cool in front of her. I don’t know what it is about her that makes me act stupid. My normally smooth and commanding presence was completely overwhelmed by her charm and beauty. If I hire her, which I know I’m going to, I have to keep it professional and not act like a horny frat boy in her presence. Somehow, I have to figure out how to stop thinking about the beautiful redhead I met tonight.SNEAK PEEK 4 –I love Brayden. With every ounce of my soul. The knowledge of that fact only makes my heart twist with pain. I’ve lost him. I know it. I pick myself up and walk slowly back to the street. From where I stand, I can just make out his building. Is he in there now? Is he making love to someone to erase my memory? It’s too far to walk to my place from here, but I don’t care. I don’t deserve any comforts. I deserve to feel pain and sadness like I’ve caused in the most amazing man I’ve ever met.I deserve this.Arriving at my apartment after walking for miles, I look down at my torn stockings and blistered feet. Unlocking my door, I step inside and collapse in a heap on my couch, praying for relief from this pain in my heart. I look down the hallway, knowing I can do the one thing that always gives me back a sense of control. It’s been ages and I know I shouldn’t. I’ve fought it successfully for so long. Years of therapy have attempted to instill coping mechanisms. The temptation is strong, though, and I find myself walking, as if in a trance, through the dark apartment.Flipping on the bathroom light, I stare at the reflection in the mirror, searching for recognition. I see a small girl, broken and in pain. She feels hopeless, powerless, and unable to fix the things that wrong her. There is no going back. No making things better. “You had your chance,” I whisper. “You stupid bitch. You never do anything right. You never will.”
