Despite a thoroughly comprehensive list of potential cherry poppers, er…suitors, and careful plotting, Charlie is three weeks into her devirginzation campaign, still untouched, and getting desperate. In the movie of her life, this aspiring screenwriter is giving herself a PG, for please, get some.
Her project goes into freeze frame when her mom checks herself into rehab and packs Charlie off to live with her estranged, or just plain strange, grandfather, Monty. How is she supposed to get a date when she has to go pick up his Depends?
Enter Eric, a hot rehab grad on the road to redemption, and the only one who can make Charlie rethink her strategy. The more she gets to know him, the more convinced she becomes that is the one, and not just another to add to the list of people who will abandon her.
In this hilarious and heartbreaking story of one girl’s detoured road to womanhood, Charlie’s list develops a life of its own – right when she realizes there’s so much more to lose.

Since Charlie, the main character in my novel, is an aspiring screenwriter who has plotted her own devirginization campaign - one that doesn't go as scripted - I thought an appropriate top ten list would be my top ten films featuring or dealing with the issue of virginity. Plus, I’m also a screenwriter, in addition to fiction author, and love to do nothing more than analyze film.Consider this list a romp through the good, the bad, the ugly, and the downright scary representations of virginity in film. Warning - be prepared for adult content / strong language if you go ahead and watch the films in question. Note: if you follow my blog (http://judithteweswrites.blogspot.ca/) you’ll see I used this theme for the entire month of April during the Blogging A to Z Challenge and discussed 25 films in total – in alphabetical order.JUDITH TEWES TOP TEN FILMS ABOUT VIRGINITY
1. J is for Juno (2007), starring Ellen Paige and Michael Cera. This film was the first screenplay I sought out and read - and it set me on my journey from novelist to screenwriter. Thank you, Diablo Cody. As for our virginity theme - it's not openly stated in the film, but it's heavily implied that this "first time" results in Juno's pregnancy.2. Sixteen Candles (1984), starring Molly Ringwald. THE screenwriter/director who encapsulates the teenage experience in ways that cross any perceived generational boundaries. His films are still being watch by teens today and beloved by those (like me!) who were first in the theatre seats for these timeless classics. Saving yourself for your crush sometimes lets you score big.3. The Graduate (1967), starring Dustin Hoffman. This film is based on the novel written by Charles Webb in 1963. Ironically, and of no connection - the main character in my novel My Soon-To-Be Sex life is named "Charlotte (Charlie) Webb". Odd how that happens. Anyway, in this film you'll meet Mrs. Robinson, the original cougar.4. Easy A (2010), starring Emma Stone. If you liked Easy A, chances are you'll think MSTBSL is a laugh-riot.5. The Virgin Suicides (1999), starring Kirsten Dunst, Josh Hartnett, and a scary Kathleen Turner. A dark look at the bleak and cloistered lives of five teen sisters and the guys who fall for them.6. 40-Year-Old Virgin (2005), starring Steve Carell. The title says it all in this one…I laughed the entire film. Bonus – all the swearing. I have a potty mouth, as does MSTBSL’s main character, Charlie.7. Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982), starring Sean Penn and a bevy of others. I remember thinking of this film and the food court scenes when I got my first job at a greasy spoon in grade 10. The crappy shifts. The hair net. The trying to look sexy in a polyester uniform. Yeah, the writer understood teens and teen sexuality. Especially Stacy's losing it scene, which was painfully awkward to watch and frankly, broke my heart.8. Superbad (2007), starring Michael Cera and Jonah Hill. While no one outright says the words, it’s pretty clear the two lead characters still have their v-cards. I loved the trainwreck that was their lives and the ah-ha moments they shared.9. Cabin in the Woods (2012), starring Kristen Connolly, Chris Hemsworth, and others. Just when you thought virgin sacrifices were old news, here's a film that proves your v-card can be dangerous to your health. I'm a huge Joss Whedon fan and this spin on horror tropes didn't disappoint.
10. American Pie (1999), starring Jason Biggs and a standout performance by Eugene Levy. Raunchy and crass, this film still managed moments of heart.
