A Midsummer Night’s Fling by Beth Matthews Book Blitz

 Midsummer Night’s Fling

 by Beth Matthews

(Stage Kiss Series #1)

Publication date: June 2014
Genres: Adult, Contemporary, Romance

Synopsis:

After dating her childhood sweetheart Max on and off for years, aspiring actress Nicola Charles is finally ready to move on. It’s time for her to focus on her stage career and stay away from Max–before he can break her heart again.
Max regrets hurting Nicola, but he wants another chance. So when his play loses its leading lady, giving Nicola the part seems like the perfect opportunity to win back his old flame.
But the course of true love—and a theater production—never do run smooth. As Max fights to reignite Nicola’s love, the onstage antics can’t rival the bedlam backstage: a neurotic cast, a prickly crew, and an evil diva of a director who’s got designs on Max.e to keep the drama onstage, Max can’t help wondering if their romance will end with the last performance. Or have the two of them finally captured what they’ve dreamed of all their lives? True Love.
A contemporary romance that should appeal to fans of the wry humor and playful sexiness in the works of Julie James and Victoria Dahl.

He shrugged, his massive shoulders rising and falling like some kind of geological event. "This is the tent pole production of the company's summer season. We need A-level talent, and none of the girls already in the company are up to snuff. Rita knows you, she's had you in a lead role before, and you've played Titania -- "
"In grad school."
As Nicola said it, Cassie shot her a shocked look from the bathroom door which was basically, Why are you sabotaging yourself?
Nicola pretty much felt the same way: furious with herself for being so childish. But as juicy as this opportunity was, Nicola didn't want anything to do with anything that had to do with Max.
Max was a trap, a dungeon, a freaking oubliette. She'd barely managed to survive leaving him five years ago. She didn't know how to process this, how to deal with him. She was swimming in cognitive dissonance. Part of her was glad to see him. Part of her was squealing with joy at the opportunity he was offering her.
And part of her wanted to punch him in the head and throw him out of her apartment.
"Which one is A Midsummer Night's Dream?" Cassie asked, turning toward Max with a polite smile.
Traitor. Nicola glowered.
"It's the play with the fairies," Max explained. "Puck. The two couples run into the forest, and the fairies meddle so people keep falling in and out of love with each other. Nicola would be playing the fairy queen -- "
"I didn't say I'd do it!"
"Whose estranged husband, the fairy king, casts a spell on her so she falls in love with a man who's got the head of a donkey. And much wackiness ensues."
Cassie frowned, thinking. "Wasn't Christian Bale in that movie? He took his shirt off."
Max gaped at Cassie in horror.
Nicola bit back a grin. "Cassie isn't much for Shakespeare. You didn't used to be either, Max."
"I'm a reformed character," he said, his voice going warm and low.
Nicola shifted, feeling her cheeks heat. Liar.

Excerpt 2

As soon as her lips touched his, Nicola knew she'd made a terrible mistake.
But, wow, did she not give a shit.
This kiss was an inevitability, the climax of the sexual tension that had been kindling inside her since they began the scene. Since I opened the door this afternoon and saw him. She sighed into his mouth, her eyes prickling.
Five years. Five years and it might as well have been a second. Or a lifetime. I don't know him anymore. Didn't know what he'd done for the last few years, didn't know how he'd changed, who he was.
            And yet.
Skin remembered skin. And her mouth opened against his with the ease of tender familiarity. She didn't really know him anymore, but her body remembered every inch of his, every touch, every breath they breathed together, every feeling.
His mouth was soft and warm as his tongue swept into her mouth. Heat pooled between her thighs, a greedy, selfish want for all he could give her.
Don't start this again. But she wanted to give in, to let go, to lose herself to him. I don't care. I don't care. With a small sigh, she deepened the kiss, her tongue clashing with his. Delicious friction. Primal need. Yes.
Max groaned into her mouth and pushed his body close to hers, backing her against the doorframe. Backing her up hard enough her head knocked into the doorframe.
He broke away. "Shit. I'm sorry."
"Ow?" Nicola rubbed her sore spot and shot him a laughing glance. "Boy, this really is like old times."
"Ah, intermissions." He grinned. "The one time I could kiss you as much as I wanted."
"Until you inevitably knocked me into a wall."
He tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. "I never meant to bang you into that wall backstage."
"Old habits. Ha. Is this a kiss or a concussion?"
"Both?" He leaned toward her, so warm, so familiar.
He'll never be what you need him to be. The thought seared into her mind, sucking all the sweetness out of her surrender. She drew away, her body tingling in anticipation of the delights which would never come now.
"Nicola?"
She ducked, dodging his hands when he tried to stop her retreat. "I have to go."

Excerpt 3

Nicola leaned against Max, that big body radiating warmth. Something was poking at her back-brain. A thing she had to talk to him about. "I wanted to talk to you," she told him.
"Me too."
"They kept buying me drinks, though."
"I saw that." He clicked his key ring, unlocking his SUV, then he popped the door open for her. When she hesitated, he put his hands on her waist and hoisted her up onto the front seat.
Her stomach swooped and she clasped his wrists, keeping his hands pinned to her waist.
Romeo & Juliet kept running through her head. Ridiculously. Incessantly. Spread thy close curtain, love-performing night . . .  Romeo leap to these arms, untalk'd of and unseen . . . "Max."
The line of his jaw stood out strong beneath the scruff of his beard. She traced the muscles, there, the bone. An insistent thrumming had started inside her, like a guitar string vibrating after it's been plucked. Each heartbeat seemed to come slowly, and too far apart. "Max?"
He covered her hand, holding it against his skin, but he was shaking his head. "You're drunk, honey. We'll talk in the morning."
He pulled away and slammed the car door shut, closing her in, shutting himself out. Max waited outside, his hands shoved in his pockets, shoulders stiff as he faced the pub, as if he couldn't even look at Nicola.
She sat in the car and watched him, trying to lift her brain out of its boozy lethargy.
Her breath fogged the window glass, and she sketched her fingers through it, making nonsense shapes. Her heart was still pounding, blood popping through her veins with little fireworks of feeling. Max. Max. Max.
Yes, she was drunk tonight, and confused, and suddenly very scared. But, like her finger streaking against the cool glass, cutting clear lines through the fog, she sensed a new clarity within herself. A truth. She wanted Max. Wanted to touch him, be with him.
She'd wanted that for weeks, ever since she'd opened the door and saw him on her doorstep again. Nobody else caused this riot inside her. Nobody else would do.
Nicola hunched into her seat, hugging herself, and tried to swallow the lump in her throat. What am I going to do?

AUTHOR BIO

Beth Matthews is a California girl, born and raised. She’s a total geek, a movie buff, and a mediocre swing dancer. She lives in sunny SoCal with her boyfriend and two of the neediest housecats on the planet.

Hi readers ,
It is a big pleasure to host Beth Matthews on my blog today.
Below you are going to find a little about Beth through: an interview, a guest post and her top 5.
I enjoyed it immensely.
Thank you very much Beth.

This is your third book, but your first contemporary romance. What made you decide to switch genres?
I feel like the romance genre experienced a bit of a Renaissance in contemporary romance a few years ago, and when I read those books I knew I had to write my own. Victoria Dahl and Julie James, for example, were two of my biggest inspirations when I wrote my own contemporaries because their books are smart, sexy, and hilarious. Jennifer Crusie, too. Nothing's better than a Jennifer Crusie romantic comedy. These days I like bouncing back and forth between fantasy and contemporary romance to keep my brain agile. ;)

Please tell us about the characters in your new book, A Midsummer Night's Fling.
Max and Nicola were childhood sweethearts, but Max was a bit of a party boy and that drove them apart. But now they're back together working on a play and neither one of them is sure they can resist their attraction. Max is a tender-hearted hunk who doubts his own abilities. Nicola is a wary but passionate actress searching for her big break.

This book is set at a successful theater company in Southern California. That's an interesting location for a romance. Did you do a lot of research on working in the theater?
I was an actor myself in my misspent youth, but I'm also lucky because I have some contacts that are still in the industry who were willing to let me pick their brains. One actor in particular, Thomas Ashworth, was really invaluable. I went to a play he was in and afterwards he persuaded the whole cast basically to line up and let me interview them. That was a very cool day!

So, you write books with actor heroes, who is your favorite actor in real life?
At the moment I am torn between Tom Hiddleston who is just gorgeous and has Talent oozing out of his beautiful pores, and Chris Pratt who is so endearing and simply adork-able. I'm leaning towards Pratt because have you seen those new pictures of him from Jurassic World?! Yum-my.

It is difficult to choose between hot, talented men isn't it? Speaking of hot men, what is your next project, and when will it be released?
Right now I'm polishing up a contemporary New Adult romance, Love's Last Call, for release later this year. It's about a dorky bouncer and the cocktail waitress he's sure is out of his league. If people want to learn more they can check out the book's info-page on my website.
Have you ever used an incident from real life in one of your books?
Yes, actually, in A Midsummer Night's Fling the hero and heroine are kissing backstage and he accidentally bangs her head against the wall. My boyfriend did this to me one night when we were backstage together. And, yes, we were kissing. ;)

What is your next project, and when will it be released?
Right now I'm polishing up a New Adult romance, Love's Last Call, for release later this year. It's about a dorky bouncer and the cocktail waitress he's sure is out of his league. If people want to learn more they can check out the book's info-page on my website.

What inspired you to write A Midsummer Night's Fling?
I've been in A Midsummer Night's Dream twice as an actor (once as a fairy and once as Hermia, the ultimate Shakespeare bimbo) and I met my boyfriend during one those productions. So, for various reasons, it's kind of my sentimental favorite of Shakespeare's plays. Reunited lovers is also one of my favorite tropes so, when I started brainstorming ideas for a contemporary, the idea of reunited lovers having to work together to play Titania and Oberon (the ultimate Shakespeare power couple) just got all of my creative juices flowing.

What scene was the hardest to write? Why?
When I was doing research for A Midsummer Night's Fling I read this great story about Richard Burton and JFK having a contest at a party to see who could remember the most Shakespearean sonnets. (Burton won, by the way.) I knew I had to steal this for my book--and I did! The hero and several of the other actors have a "Sonnet Faceoff"--but working the contest into the story was difficult. I had to keep the pace moving and find a balance between working the sonnets in but not drowning the reader with them. I think I finally nailed it, but it took a LOT of drafts.

What's your favorite moment from your book?

I really love this exchange between the hero and heroine right after she joins the play:

"I should have asked for more money to do this play," she said.

Max nodded. "Probably."

"And my own dressing room."

"Definitely."

"And some sort of cabana boy to feed me grapes in the breaks between scenes."

"Well," Max paused, putting on a thoughtful expression. "We don't have anyone like that on staff, but maybe one of the interns."
Who's your favorite character in A Midsummer Night's Fling?
Well, of course I love the leads and I love their chemistry together, but one of the secondary characters snuck up on me too and became a real scene stealer. That was Lachlan, the hero's main rival in the theater company. Lachlan is really fun to write because he is snarky and sneaky and British and sexy as hell. (He might or might not be based a little bit on Tom Hiddleston…) Lachlan is going to get his own book at some point--he's just too much fun to write!
How do you celebrate when you finish a novel?
Sleeping. Sad but true, I usually do a mad typing spree and stay up WAY too late to finish books.

What is your next project, and when will it be released?
Right now I'm polishing up a New Adult romance, Love's Last Call, for release later this year. It's about a dorky bouncer and the cocktail waitress he's sure is out of his league. If people want to learn more they can check out the book's info-page on my website.
Which three books would you take to a desert island and why?
Curse of Chalion by Lois McMaster Bujold because that is my very favorite book. The hero Cazaril is so compassionate and witty. I reread that book at least once a year. Faking It by Jennifer Crusie, which is probably my favorite romance novel of all time. I love Tilda and Davy's banter. No one writes banter like Crusie. Lastly, I would probably take some sort of instruction manual on how to build a raft or an island survival guide. ;P

What’s your guilty pleasure?
Murder, She Wrote. I am addicted to that show and have seen every episode multiple times. Jessica Fletcher is my role model and I totally want to be her and have her jet-setting, fabulous authorial life when I grow up. With fewer murders and more sexytimes, of course.

What’s your greatest extravagance?
Hell Bunny dresses on Modcloth. I am so addicted to that website I hesitate to even link to it lest I encourage others to follow me down the rabbit hole. Modcloth has SO much cute stuff, though. Literally 90% of my wardrobe is from Modcloth.

What’s your most treasured possession?
My late father was a jewelry designer and he made my mom a wedding band to wear when she was pregnant with me because her finger was too big for her normal ring. I just love that I have something so beautiful that he sort of made for both of us before he passed away.

Using the Theater in Fiction

Since my book A Midsummer Night's Fling is about a pair of actors plying their trade I thought it would be fun to talk about some of my favorite stories that, like my book, use the theater as their setting.

One of my favorite character types in romance novels is the actor hero/heroine. I can never get enough of books that feature working actors, which is probably why I’m writing the Stage Kiss Series--a whole series of nothing but actor heroes/heroines! The first book A Midsummer Night's Fling came out this summer, and tells the story of two reunited lovers trying to work out their issues amidst all the bedlam backstage at a theater company.

Unfortunately, it's pretty difficult to find "actor books" set in the theater (most stories feature film actors), but the Jocelyn O’Roarke murder mystery series by Jane Dentinger does theater right. These are mysteries with a dash of romance, and the amateur sleuth is a take charge theater actress. The behind the scenes theater elements on this series are wonderful: putting on makeup, costume fittings, rehearsals, auditions. It's all there, and it's all so fun to read about.

Those are about the only fiction I've read with a theater actor as the lead that I really loved. But, fortunately, TV has tackled life upon the wicked stage a time or two. A few years ago the TV series Smash was on the air, and it was all about trying to produce a Broadway musical based on the life of Marilyn Monroe. One of the things I loved about this show was the wide variety of characters it followed: actors, yes, but also directors, producers, writers. And a lot of the original music for the Marilyn and other fake musicals was really fantastic.

I have to say, though, probably my favorite theater story is Slings & Arrows, a hilarious Canadian TV show about a floundering classical theater festival; Shakespeare references, romance, and hilarity abound. The series is smart and really well done. The writers having been former theater actors themselves this show gets so much right and, again, the show features a wide variety of characters doing various things around the theater. It also has a TON of Shakespeare discussion, performance, and allusions. Me, being a former English major, just loved all of that.

So, what about you? Are any of you fans of live theater? Do you wish you could see more backstage stories like the ones described above?

Top 5 Reunited Lovers

Since my book A Midsummer Night's Fling is about a pair of reunited lovers (they were sweethearts in high school and college), I thought it would be fun to talk about my Top 5 Reunited Lovers of All Time.

5. Fred and Lily from Kiss Me Kate
"Deceive me, desert me, I'm yours 'til I die…so in love with you am I."
My favorite musical and my favorite feuding lovers. I grew up watching the 1950s version with Howard Keel. These two are immature, tempestuous, spoiled, and perfect for each other. You certainly wouldn't wish them on anyone else.

4. Navarre and Isabeau from Ladyhawke
"Do you know that hawks and wolves mate for life? The Bishop didn't even leave us that... not even that."
One of my favorite movies as a teenager. The curse on these two is so poignant: "always together, eternally apart." She's cursed to be a hawk during the day; he's cursed to be a wolf during the night. When they're finally together again as humans in the end it makes me cry. Every. Time.

3. Captain Wentworth & Anne Elliot from Persuasion by Jane Austen
"You pierce my soul. I am half agony, half hope. Tell me not that I am too late, that such precious feelings are gone forever. I offer myself to you again with a heart even more your own than when you almost broke it, eight years and a half ago."
The classic example of lovers reunited. The yardstick, perhaps, by which we measure all other reunion stories? I know it's pretty darn hard to top Wentworth's love letter to Anne quoted above.

2. Logan and Veronica (LoVe) from the Veronica Mars TV show and movie
"I thought our story was epic, you know, you and me…Spanning years and continents. Lives ruined, bloodshed. EPIC."
These guys are probably so near the top because I love them so much together, and I ended up waiting for their reunion in real time. Seven years! When the TV show was cancelled they were still broken up. I gnashed my teeth at that injustice but, luckily, **SPOILER ALERT** earlier this year LoVe got the reunion they deserved in a super romantic scene from the Veronica Mars movie. Yay! No more waiting!

1. Westley & Buttercup from The Princess Bride
"Death cannot stop True Love; all it can do is delay it for a little while."
Can anything top this line? Really? Westley braves pirates, kidnappers, evil princes, and all the dangers of the Fire Swamp to reunite with his true love. And, once they finally are back together, their kiss is certified as the Best Kiss Ever. And that's one of many reasons why this is my favorite reunited lovers story of all time.

Honorable Mentions:
*Allie and Noah from The Notebook (the kissing in the rain scene!)
*Charming and Snow from Once Upon a Time TV show ("I will find you. I will always find you.")

Well, I listed mine, your turn now. Who are some of your favorite reunited lovers? Who do you think should have made the list? :)
