Sixteen-year-old Katherine Thompson wasn’t trained to rule a coven. That was her sister – perfect, beautiful Rose. But when a mysterious plane crash kills off the heir presumptive of the Sandersville coven she has no choice. After stepping in to fill her sister’s shoes, Katherine realizes she didn’t have a clue – faery wars, depressed trolls and angry unicorns are just the beginning. For centuries, her family has served the high Queens on both sides of the Atlantic but it is a well-known rule that mid-level witches stay away from high-level Queens. But when Katherine’s youngest cousin vanishes without a trace in the Atlanta court and no one wants to investigate, Katherine decides to step into the darkness on her own. She soon discovers that nothing, especially in the Atlanta High Queen’s court, is as it seems. When she accidentally opens a rift in the search for her cousin, Richard LeCross, the Queen’s warlock, decides that Katherine is more trouble than she’s worth. He determines that this mortal, dangerously close to becoming a High Queen, needs to die. But killing Katherine is easier said than done. For a young woman who’s always believed in right versus wrong, she’s about to go head over heels into the dark side.

Q: What is your latest book? FAQS
Sworn To Defiance, Courtlight #5, released on April 28, 2014.
Q: What’s next?
Blades Of Illusion, Crown Service #2, will be the next out of the two high fantasy series. Accession, Sarath Web #1, will proceed as scheduled to release on August 5th.
Q: Why is/was there a delay?
Putting out quality, full-length books on a fast schedule is tough when you’re your own publisher. I’m working as hard and fast as I can but I’ve been getting all of my backlist of books into audio + print in addition to trying to stave off ‘new ideas’. As a result Sworn To Transfer’s audiobook came out in June, Sworn To Conflict’s print + audiobook will be out in July and I’m working hard to publish Accession on it’s scheduled time. :) I hope you enjoy.
Q. What’s the difference between your two high fantasy series?
The Courtlight series and the Crown Service series are both set in the Algardis Universe. Crown Service starts three centuries before the beginning of the Courtlight series. In the second century of the Algardis empire, the land is fractured into principalities and fiefdoms. The mages are in control and different factions within them go to war, a civil war that lasted off-and-on for one hundred years. Check out teasers into Blades of Magic, Book One in the Crown Service series here.
Q. What types of books do you write?
I write Young Adult fiction. Always. Why? Because I believe the teenage and young adult experience is powerful. My characters range in age from 15-18 (so far) but they are always going to be set in a uniquely coming of age realm of experience. Everything else, whether it’s high fantasy or urban fantasy, is my lens for examining that experience.
Q. What about genres?
High Fantasy:
Courtlight Series – A Weathervane who gets into a ton of trouble with her friends and family by her side as she fights to do what’s right
Crown Service Series – A Battle Mage searching for the truth about her father’s death amidst the fight to defend an empire torn apart by civil war
Urban Fantasy:
Sarath Web Series – A young witch with the power to call upon the fae and gifts that will enable her to assume the throne of the Atlanta High Queen.
What’s this? Urban Fantasy? o.O
As a teen I read everything high fantasy, magical book I could get my hands on, but I also was a big fan of urban fantasy. I read authors like Laurell K. Hamilton, Sherrilyn Kenyon, Christine Feehan, and Kim Harrison. From those authors came my fascination with mixing reality and fantasy with really awesome female protagonists leading the charge. I like to think of my YA Urban Fantasy/Paranormal Romance as a mixture of the elements from high fantasy (coming of age, quests, bonds, and extreme magic) with the components of urban fantasy (modern world, heroic female, and devil-may-care attitude).

12 THINGS ABOUT ME
- I love caramel iced coffee.
- I set my alarm for 7:25AM everyday. It’s gets me up in a reasonable amount of time.
- I rarely have time to read for pleasure.
- I didn’t start writing books until I was 24.
- I could live on Chipotle meals….and I have.
- I spent one year living in Morocco and one year living in South Sudan. Very different experiences but each country brought challenges of their own.
- I wish I owned a West Highland White Terrier, a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Pug. Instead I have four wonderful doggies that light up my life…usually.
- I live for young adult fantasy. But I also have other tastes. For instance, Anne Bishop is an auto-buy for me.
- The cover art for the next book always needs to be done before I start writing – it motivates me.
- I hardly ever re-watch a tv show or movie. If I’ve seen it once, that’s enough.
- I’m incredibly proud of all my books and particularly of BLADES OF MAGIC, which is my first to hit the Amazon Top 500 solo! But hopefully not the last. ;)
- I try my absolute hardest to meet my self-imposed deadlines but sometimes I get overwhelmed. Rest assured, I’m still working on the promised books.
