The Baskerville Affair
When a young lady is simultaneously faced with murder, evil automatons, and an invitation from the queen, what is she to do?
If one is Evelina Cooper, there are quite a few choices. After all, she has magic at her fingertips (sort of) and an aptitude for mechanics (hardly ladylike). She also has the famous detective, Sherlock Holmes, for an uncle, and he’s more than happy to give pointers when it comes to an investigation. So, when a servant turns up dead at the home of Evelina’s best friend, Imogen Roth, it’s up to Evelina to solve the case and clear her friend’s family from scandal before Inspector Lestrade starts asking inconvenient questions. Just because the Roth family is innocent of murder, that doesn’t mean some secrets shouldn’t stay buried—just ask Imogen’s handsome brother, the ne’er-do-well rake, Tobias.
The Baskerville Affair is part mystery, part magic, part romance,
and all steampunk adventure. Despite the glittering façade of London’s wealthiest neighborhoods, society is split between the industrialist Steam Barons and the rest of the population—nobility and common folk alike—who are game pieces in the Barons’ battle for power. Magic is punishable by death. Pirates threaten the skies. And then there are Her Majesty’s Secret Laboratories, where rogue science produces living nightmares. Behind it all, rebellion is brewing, but so far it is the merest of whispers.
A Study in Silks follows Evelina’s foray into the intrigue-infested ballrooms and garden parties of Victorian London. Her mission begins with a simple murder, but she quickly begins to untangle a much larger plot.
A Study in Darkness takes place in impoverished Whitechapel, where a serial killer is slaughtering women near Dr. Magnus’s sinister theater—and where Evelina’s lost love returns at the helm of a pirate airship. Behind the scenes, Sherlock and Mycroft Holmes are up to their deerstalker hats in political intrigue and revolution, all led by the shadowy figure of someone named Baskerville.
A Study in Ashes brings all these threads together in a final battle for the
Empire, for family loyalties, and literally for Evelina’s soul. Finding the truth is never neat and tidy, and my characters do make rather a lot of mess along the way—but they have a deliciously swashbuckling time doing so!
The Baskerville Affair trilogy came out from Del Rey in North America last fall, and now I’m delighted to celebrate the release of my series to the UK through Piatkus Entice. Please come into the salon and celebrate!
What is your favorite teatime recipe? Here’s mine:
Victorian Scones
Blend:
2 cups of flour
1 tsp baking powder
1 tsp cream of tartar
½ tsp of salt
3 tablespoons of sugar
Cut in ¼ cup of butter
Make a well in the center and pour in the juice of one large lemon and enough milk so that the total volume of liquid is 2/3 cup
Finally, add:
grated rind of one large lemon
½ cup dried cranberries
Knead the dough for 5 minutes on a floured surface. Roll out until it’s about an inch thick and cut into 2 inch rounds with a floured cutter. Brush the tops with a little milk.
Bake at 425 degrees for 20 minutes.
For a traditional taste, omit the cranberries and lemon and use heavy cream for the liquid. Currants are also a nice addition.

A Study in Ashes
About Emma Jane Holloway
Author Bio:
Ever since childhood, Emma Jane Holloway refused to accept that history was nothing but facts prisoned behind the closed door of time. Why waste a perfectly good playground coloring within the timelines? Accordingly, her novels are filled with whimsical impossibilities and the occasional eye-blinking impertinence—but always in the service of grand adventure.
Struggling between the practical and the artistic—a family tradition, along with ghosts and a belief in the curative powers of shortbread—Emma Jane has a degree in literature and job in finance. She lives in the Pacific Northwest in a house crammed with books, musical instruments, and half-finished sewing projects. In the meantime, she’s published articles, essays, short stories, and enough novels to build a fort for her stuffed hedgehog.
