BBB: What’s your favorite love story? (movie or book) LD: Definitely Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte. It’s a book that I never get tired of reading over and over again. Another favorite of mine is Strangers in Paradise by Terry Moore. If you are a fan of comic books (especially indie comics) then definitely check it out.
BBB: Are you a morning or night person?
LD: Does late morning count? I’d rather sleep half the day away, but since I have two kids that’s not an option for me anymore.
BBB: List five adjectives to describe yourself.
LD: Funny, thoughtful, introverted, smart, and multi-talented.
BBB: What’s your favorite material object that you already own?
LD: My iPad Mini. Because I can put all my books in it (so I can read anywhere) and I can also write my novels on there as well.
BBB: Please tell us more about First Frost and the storyline that drives it.
LD: I got the idea for First Frost while watching a commercial for a local children’s museum. I thought about how cool it would be to have different themed museums and all of a sudden the idea for a fairy tale themed museum hit me. I jotted down the basic idea for the story and then thought about the characters. Who works there? Why? Who are they really? And then I thought about Bianca and decided that she was a descendant of Snow White. So fairy tales is a the solid foundation for the entire Frost series.
What I love the most about the story is that I think about what it would be like if this was happening in the real world. How would a real seventeen year old girl react to coming face to face with witches and magic after spending her entire life believing that it was all make-believe.
BBB: How many more books will there be in the First Frost series?
LD: The dream is that it’ll be an ongoing series, especially since there’s so much material to draw from. But I would be happy with 5 or 6 books. I don’t want to force the storyline or the characters if the magic is no longer there. Right now I’m just having fun writing these stories and letting the characters take me on an amazing journey. I feel lucky to have come across such vibrant and loveable characters.
BBB: What sets the First Frost series apart from other books in the same genre?
LD: First Frost is not really a fairy tale retelling. The original fairy tales are really the foundation for the story and the characters.What sets the books apart is that I treat all the fairy tale characters as though they had lives after their story came to an end. What if they children? What if they had grandchildren? What really happens after ‘happily ever after’?
I ended up stumbling upon amazin characters like Bianca and Rose Frost.
I also took the liberty of adding some amazing fairy tale items and gave each one a special quirk or magical ability.
For example, Rapunzel’s hair grows four times in length. The Brick from the Third Little Pigs House turns into an indestructible cottage. Red Riding Hood’s cape shows the wearer the safest route to take to their destination.
It’ just a great, fun series.
BBB: What types of characters / creatures can readers expect in your world?
LD: In First Frost you expect to meet the Big Bad Wolf, the Evil Queen and Snow White makes an appearance. In Glass Frost we meet the great-granddaughter of The Frog Prince, and Fanny and Elda from the story Toads and Diamonds. We also find out what happened to the Seven Dwarves after Snow White married the prince.
BBB: If you could visit any place in the world, where would you choose to go and why?
LD: Definitely Ireland. There’s just something so magical about it, my mom went a couple
BBB: Name one funny trait you have, that you would like others to know.
LD: I stare off into space sometimes at the most random times.
BBB: As a child, what did you wish to become when you grew up? (besides a writer)
LD: I wanted to be a teacher. But that didn’t work out because I couldn’t afford to go to college.
BBB: What is your favorite decade? (50′s, 60′s, 70′s, 80′s, etc.) and why?
LD: The 60’s, because of the fashion and the music.
BBB: What are some of your favorite book to movie adaptations?
LD: Big Fish by David Wallace. The movie was amazing, I LOVE Ewan McGregor in the movie.
BBB: What’s coming up for you for the rest of 2014 and into 2015??
LD: I have a comic book titled Zombie Ever After that’s going to be released in November 2014 through Emerald Star Comics. A novella titled The Laurel that just got picked up by Musa Publishing (no release date yet). And hopefully the third book in the Frost Series will be finished soon. I’m also working on a collection of short stories titled Mugshots with my BFF Elizabeth Kolodziej.
