EXCERPT 1:
I jumped up and walked to the window. Torin was in his kitchen. Shirtless. Those abs. That sculptured, endless chest. There ought to be a law against men like him and sweatpants that hang so low they bordered on indecent. He reached down and scratched his butt.
I giggled. Only Torin could look hot scratching his perfect ass.
He disappeared from the window. Dang it. He was supposed to glance out the window and check on me first. Now I wasn’t going to get my morning coffee.
I turned to head to the shower, and he walked through the portal shirtless and barefoot. He had the sexiest feet ever. I ogled him a little. Okay, a lot.
“You continue with that and I’ll forget your mom is not here,” he warned, putting the cup on my dresser.
I braced myself against his chest, went on my toes, and kissed him. I couldn’t help what I did next. I scratched his butt. “Still itchy?”
He chuckled, wrapping an arm around my waist. “I knew you were checking me out, you perv.”
“How? Your back was to me.”
“I have lustful-eyes-on-me radar.” My feet left the floor as his lips claimed mine in a kiss that shot from warm to scorching in warp speed. Then we were rolling on the bed. I did what any sane girl would do when met with a force beyond her control. I soaked it all in and clung.
He tasted amazing. Coffee, vanilla, and stomach-curling goodness. He rolled again so I was on top. He knew how I loved that. My thick hair formed a curtain around us. He loved that.
“Good morning, Freckles,” Torin whispered against my lips, his hand slipping lower.
“Behave,” I warned, grabbing his hand and bringing it back to my waist.
He chuckled, the sound sexy. “You scratch and I scratch back.”
EXCERPT 2:
“I need to show you something,” I said and reached under my T-shirt for his seal pendant.
“Apologize first.”
“Torin, this is not the time for games.”
“Who said I’m playing?” He braced himself on the doorframe and lowered his head until he and I were on the same eye level. “You told me to stay away from you. Unforgiveable. You implied our relationship might not survive. Totally wrong and cruel. But the worst part, you said your feelings for me make you weak.” His eyebrows shot up. “Weak? Seriously? What in Hel’s Mist does that mean?” He was furious.
“Are you forgetting what happened before I said those things?”
“So no apology?”
“No.” I was dying to, but he had to understand I wasn’t a breakable doll.
He stepped back and slammed the door in my face.
My jaw dropped. No, he didn’t. That arrogant man didn’t just do that. I turned to walk downstairs so angry I wanted to chuck something. Halfway down the stairs, I stopped and glared at my phone, wishing I could send him a nasty text. Too bad he wouldn’t see it.
I stomped back.
When I burst into his room, he was waiting. His eyes said he’d known I’d be back.
“Let me tell you exactly what I think of your tantrum, Valkyrie. It was unforgiveable. You don’t slam the door in my face. Ever. You do it again and I’ll… I’ll…” I took a step back as he closed the gap between us. “What are you—?”
EXCERPT 3:
“When do you need to be home?” he whispered.
“Six-ish.” The clock by his bed had said five-thirty something. “I texted Femi earlier.” I didn’t want us to stop. Today had been so stressful.
Torin rolled us across the bed and reached for my cell. Kill joy.
I read Femi’s text while he did his best to distract me. “Six-thirty.”
Making out with Torin was like drifting in a sea of sensations, away from reality and the mundane. His hands and mouth were gifted, and being with him was beautiful, intense, and mind-blowing. Times like this, I hated that we’d agreed to wait before I could give myself to him. Each time, it got just a little harder to stop. It was so frustrating.
Sighing, he wrapped his legs around mine like a pretzel and held me so there was no space between us, as though he was scared someone would rip me from his arms.
We stayed like that for a while, until I couldn’t stand it anymore. I kissed his chest. “You want to tell me what’s bothering you?”
“Nothing is bothering me.” He spoke against my forehead.
I didn’t believe him. We had faced some jacked up situations together, but I’d never seen him like this. I was the one who always got twisted on the inside. He was often my rock. My anchor. Something had shaken him to the core, and I wanted to know what it was.
“Torin?”
“Hmm,” he mumbled.
“Talk to me.”
Silence.
I waited. The silence stretched. “I’m here for you if you need to talk.”
His arms tightened around me. “I know.”
EXCERPT 4:
“You’re back early,” I called out and glanced over my shoulder.
Torin walked away from the mirror portal in the living room. Leather jacket, jeans hugging narrow hips, and windblown hair wrapped in pure deliciousness couldn’t begin to describe him. He sauntered to where I stood, his sexy smile melting my insides.
“I had a feeling you needed me,” he said, the British lilt stroking my senses. He came to stand behind me and ran his knuckles up and down my arms, his movements slow and sensual. I shivered and leaned against him, welcoming his heat. “Your arms are freezing.”
“I went outside to talk to Blaine.”
“Blaine visited you?” He cross-crossed his arms around my waist and pulled me closer, curving his body into mine. I closed my eyes and inhaled. He smelled amazing. But when he rubbed his cheek against the side of my head, I tilted my head, so our faces could touch. His skin was hot.
“Freckles?”
“Hmm…”
“You’re purring.”
I was. “No, I’m not.”
“Am I distracting you again?” he whispered.
He always did. “No. Did you ask me something?”
EXCERPT 5:
Cora and Echo were making out by her car when we pulled up. The two never failed to make me smile. Psycho Maliina had used her Norn powers to completely mimic Cora and fooled us for weeks. We didn’t know Cora had been admitted to a psyche ward during those weeks because Maliina had marked her with some jerked up runes and she could see souls. Like any sane person, Cora had thought she was seeing ghosts and going crazy. Meeting Echo had changed her perception of things.
“Come on,” Torin said, wanting us to leave the couple alone.
I dug my heels in. “I want to talk to Cora.”
Torin sighed. “I don’t want to deal with him this early in the morning.”
I thought they’d made up, but I supposed a few months of working together couldn’t erase centuries of bad blood. Grimnirs like Echo reaped for Hel and had a long history of stealing souls bound for Valhalla.
“You two need to make up. Cora is still my best friend.”
“I am your best friend,” he said firmly, hand slipping around my waist.
I gave him a look over my shoulder and teased, “I don’t know. She’s my best girlfriend, but Eirik… now he is best friend material.” My voice cracked. “You’re just a glorified Valkyrie… my boyfriend.”
Blue flames leaped in his eyes. He leaned down and whispered in my ear, “Boyfriend, lover, guinea pig for naughty fantasies, and—”
“Shut up.” Just like that, he’d deliberately distracted me from my worries about Eirik. He had an uncanny way of reading me.
“I’m not complaining, you understand,” he added. “Just want to make sure you recognize my awesomeness.”
EXCERPT 6:
(RAINE & ANDRIS)
“Did you know I was different when we first met?”
“Fishing for complements now?”
“No, wondering if you noticed something different about me, smart ass. Ingrid and Maliina did.” I faced forward and sighed. “Ingrid said witches can recognize each other.”
Andris shuddered. “Don’t talk to me about witches.”
“What is it with you guys and witches? Torin reacted the same way.” I noticed we were headed east toward my place. “You’re really not going to buy me a macchiato?”
“Got that right, but since I’m such a nice guy, I’ll go back to town and pick up your favorite. Extra large.”
I frowned. “Sounds like you don’t want to be seen with me.”
“No, I don’t. You’ll mess with my game. I’m single and on the prowl. Besides, you have papers for your father to sign and you want to catch him lucid.”
He was right, dang it. “How did you know about the forms?”
“Vulcan hearing.”
I rolled my eyes. He was a serious sci-fi fan. Movies. Books. TV series. He ate it up. Of course, he’d never admit it to anyone but those closest to him. He pulled into our cul-de-sac. My eyes went to Torin’s place. The house was closed up.
“Where did you say Torin went?”
“I didn’t.” Andris pulled up in front of my house. “He’ll be back before you know it, so go hug his pillow or something.” He ducked when I aimed my backpack at his head.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
EDNAH WALTERS grew up reading Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys and dreaming of one day writing her own stories. She is a stay-at-home mother of five humans and two American short-hair cats (one of which has ADHD) and a husband. When she is not writing, she’s at the gym doing Zumba or doing things with her family, reading, traveling or online chatting with fans.
*Writing about myself is not as easy as penning a saga about fictitious characters. Where to start? What to add? What to leave out? Don't want to bore you with stories of my childhood...so I'll start with the more interesting stuff.
I started making up fairytale stories before I could write, even wrote a play which was performed by my class in high school, but I didn't complete my first story until I finished my PhD in chemistry and decided to be a stay-at-home mother. The first books I wrote were picture books about the adventures of a little lion: Little Leo and his pet Cockatoo, Little Leo and Zuri, Little Leo the Trickster. My kids got a kick out of hearing me read them out aloud. Then I moved to mid-grade chapter books. Their favorite was Goldilocks Before the Three Bears.
Then I tried my hand at contemporary romance and romantic suspense. That didn't go so well and besides, I couldn't read them to my children. And the little munchkins grew and became teens and moody and impossible to please...digressing again.
As teens, my babies wanted to read teen books. Vampires and werewolves were in. A professor of mine once told me that you can either be the first or the best at what you do. I wasn't too keen on jumping on the vampire/werewolf bandwagon, so being first was out. And I couldn't see myself being the best, self-taught writer that I am. So I decided to write something different--the fallen angels.
The idea for Awakened (originally named The Awakening) rose from the inner recesses of my mind after I came across the stories of kris/keris daggers. All I knew was that the weapon had to be at the center of my story. Soon the characters formed in my head and wouldn't leave me alone, especially an orphaned girl named Lil. Finding a home for Awakened wasn't easy. Books about fallen angels by other authors hit the shelves while I was still trying to find an agent and an editor willing to take a chance on me. Like most of my stories, Awakened is full of romance, mystery and adventure. I believe in the power of love, and that's why I spice up my stories with romance. Betrayed, the official book 1, was released June 2012. Hunted will be out April 2013.
When I'm not working on my YA series, I write contemporary romance under the pen name E. B. Walters. I have five books released in this series. I live in picturesque valley in northern Utah with my husband, five children and two cats.

The History behind Runes
A BIT OF BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Norse Mythology (or Scandinavian mythology) is the body of mythology of the North Germanic peoples, stemming from norse paganism and continuing after the Christinization of Scandanavia and into the Scandinavian folklore of the modern period. Norse mythology consits of tales of various deities, beings, and heroes derived from numerous sources from both before and afer the pagan period, including medieval manuscripts, archaeological representations, and folk tradition.
The 9 Realms
In Norse mythology, there are nine realms (worlds):
1. Asgard (home of the Aesir gods):
2. Vanaheim (home of the Vanir gods)
3. Alfheim (home of the light Elves)
4. Midgard (home of humans) The rainbow bridge (Bifrost) connects Midgard and Asgard. Midgard is in the middle of the realms
5. Svartalheim (home of the dark Elves)
6. Nidavellir (home of the Dwarves).
Dwarves were master craftsmen. They forged Thor's hammer and Odin's spear
7. Jotunheim (home of the giants): Even though the giants from Jotunheim were sworn enemies of Aesir, the gods would take giantesses are lovers and have children with them.
8. Niflheim-the coldest and misty region in the north. Somewhere under the ground in Niflheim in Hel
9. Muspelheim-Home of fire giants and demons. It is way south, it's hot with volcanic activities.
All nine of these Realms center around a cosmological tree, Yggdrasil. Yggdrasil is thought to be in the shape of the tree, giving it the nickname "The Tree of Life" or "The World Tree."
The Vanir and Aesir
WHO ARE THEY?
The Aesir: Generally, the Aesir are deities of consciousness and are more associated with fire, air, war, power and the passionate mechanical aspects of being; They include many of the major deities, such as Odin, Frigga, Thor, Balder and Tyr.
The Vanir: Associated with earth, water, the natural and organic, the Venir are mainly connected with fertility, joy and peace, although these are by no means firmly set boundaries; They include Njord, Freyr and Freyja, who live among the Aesir since the end of the conflict between the two clans of gods (traded for MÃmir and Honir).
Æsir–Vanir War
In Norse mythology, gods and goddesses usually belong to one of two tribes: the Aesir and the Vanir. Throughout most of the Norse tales, deities from the two tribes get along fairly easily, and it’s hard to pin down firm distinctions between the two groups. But there was a time when that wasn’t the case.
The War of the Gods
The Vanir goddess Freya was always the foremost practitioner of the art of seidr, a form of magic principally concerned with discerning and altering the course of destiny. Like historical seidr practitioners, she wandered from town to town plying her craft for hire
Under the name Heiðr (“Bright”), she eventually came to Asgard, the home of the Aesir. The Aesir were quite taken by her powers and zealously sought her services. But soon they realized that their values of honor, kin loyalty, and obedience to the law were being pushed aside by the selfish desires they sought to fulfill with the witch’s magic. Blaming Freya for their own shortcomings, the Aesir called her “Gullveig” (“Gold-greed”) and attempted to murder her. Three times they tried to burn her, and three times she was reborn from the ashes.
Because of this, the Aesir and Vanir came to hate and fear one another, and these hostilities erupted into war. The Aesir fought by the rules of plain combat, with weapons and brute force, while the Vanir used the subtler means of magic. The war went on for some time, with both sides gaining the upper hand by turns.
Eventually the two tribes of divinities became weary of fighting and decided to call a truce. As was customary among the ancient Norse and other Germanic peoples, the two sides agreed to pay tribute to each other by sending hostages to live among the other tribe. Freya, Freyr, and Njord of the Vanir went to the Aesir, and Hoenir (pronounced roughly “HIGH-neer”) and Mimir went to the Vanir.
Norse Magic
Norse gods used magic. Vanir gods used incantations, sorcery and charms.
Goddess Freya taught the Asgardians this kind of magic when she moved to Asgard. The knowledge was passed on to worthy human to fight evil. To learn more about Incantation magic, go here.
Odin was the first to get runes and used them to do magic. He taught the other gods runic magic, which were passed on to worthy humans. To learn more about Runic magic, go here.
The Runes
Runes have been used by Germanic people before the Dark Ages. People used runes for writing, messages, inscriptions on amulets and charms, as an oracle for use in divination and for ritual, in magic and spells.
