A sweeping historical romance about a witch who foresees her own murder–and the one boy who can help change her future.
Sixteen-year-old Avery Roe wants only to take her rightful place as the witch of Prince Island, making the charms that keep the island’s whalers safe at sea, but her mother has forced her into a magic-free world of proper manners and respectability. When Avery dreams she’s to be murdered, she knows time is running out to unlock her magic and save herself.
Avery finds an unexpected ally in a tattooed harpoon boy named Tane–a sailor with magic of his own, who moves Avery in ways she never expected. Becoming a witch might stop her murder and save her island from ruin, but Avery discovers her magic requires a sacrifice she never prepared for.
IceyBooks: Describe SALT & STORM in 5-7 words.
Kendall: Witches, whaling, islands, mothers, love, and sacrifice.
IceyBooks: Many novels are inspired a question—was there one that sparked SALT & STORM?
Kendall: Not really a question so much as a feeling: what’s it like growing up in a small, isolated community, and feeling both comfortable and trapped in your home?
IceyBooks: Historical fiction is one of my favorite genres, is there any reason you chose to set SALT & STORM in early times?
Kendall: I actually didn’t intend to write historical fiction, but after I decided to write about a fictional island off the coast of Massachusetts, the culture and history of whaling on those islands proved so compelling that I ended up setting the story back in the nineteenth century to take advantage of the richness and atmosphere of a whaling community.
IceyBooks: If SALT & STORM was being adapted for film, who would portray your main character?
Kendall: There are so many fantastic young actresses who I think could capture Avery beautifully. I love Hailee Steinfeld—she was so so great in True Grit. I’m also a big fan of Kaya Scodelario, who starred in the British TV show Skins and will be in the new Maze Runner movie.
IceyBooks: What were your thoughts when you caught your first glimpse at the gorgeous cover for SALT & STORM?
Kendall: Oh my gosh—I was stunned in the best possible way! I loved the color, the writing, and especially the rope knot, which feels so timeless and iconic. It’s always a little nerve-wracking seeing a cover for the first time, but luckily I got a beauty!
