The Perilous Sea was a highly engaging young adult fantasy. It’s been awhile since I read the first book and was initially (slightly) confused about some things but as I read they quickly came back to me. There wasn’t much recap but we see enough that the pieces start sliding together. The most obvious difference in this book is that it takes place in two different time periods. These two periods move together to meet at the end and it worked quite well in this particular book.
We see things that we can safely assume is the future and some pretty crazy events that are happening, it’s very intense and life or death through the entire bit. Then we get what I would say is the current time (where we were left off in the previous book) and things are a tad bit slower, but still completely fascinating. Especially since we are trying to piece things together from the future and what might have lead to that situation.
I love the characters in this book! I think I felt a bit distanced from them in the first book and in the style of writing that could be the case here, but I guess I didn’t care and maybe I just got enough that I felt satisfied with what I was getting from them. I did get frustrated because I thought there was going to be a bit of drama regarding the romance but it was really just a short bit and then it was sorted, and that was a relief. The romance itself was present, but not at all a focus and that worked well in this book. We still see that spark between them and that was excellent.
There’s a lot of revelations and major things that happen in this book. Like a mystery (which it has plenty of) we are constantly trying to piece things together to figure it all out. I really loved this aspect.
I also have to comment on the world, it seems similar to Harry Potter but yet is totally and completely different. It’s just something I was thinking of as read. It was just really fantastic, creative and unique and I think I enjoyed it even more than I did with the first book.
This book was pushed until the very last minute but it ended up not being a concern. Once I started reading, I didn’t want to stop!
