Summary from Goodreads:
The end of the world just might be their perfect beginning…
Glenview, North Carolina. Also known―at least to sixteen-year-old Ava Pegg―as the Land of Incredibly Boring Vacations. What exactly were her parents thinking when they bought a summer home here? Then the cute-but-really-annoying boy next door shows up at her place in a panic…hollering something about flesh-eating zombies attacking the town.
At first, Ava’s certain that Cole spent a little too much time with his head in the moonshine barrel. But when someone―or something―rotted and terrifying emerges from behind the woodpile, Ava realizes this is no hooch hallucination. The undead are walking in Glenview, and they are hungry. Panicked, Ava and Cole flee into the national forest. No supplies, no weapons. Just two teenagers who don’t even like each other fighting for their lives. But that’s the funny thing about the Zombpocalypse. You never know when you’ll meet your undead end. Or when you’ll fall dead over heels for a boy…
BBB: What is your best scar? Tell the story of how you got it. AK: A gash on my elbow from playing tackle-in-the-street football when I was 12. (The perils of being the only girl on a street with 11 boys.)
BBB: If you could be invisible for a day, what would you do?
AK: Hide in my husband’s closet and scare the heck out of him!
BBB: When people look at me, they would never guess that I:
AK: Write zombie books. I should probably dye my hair black and be less cheerful.
BBB: If a genie granted you three wishes, what would they be? (can’t ask for more wishes)
AK: I work with a lot of underprivileged students at my day job–I’d wish for them to get free college tuition. And good jobs after college. And the ability to pass along that gift of education to their kids.
BBB: Please tell us more about Dead Over Heels and the storyline that drives it.
AK: Ava is a city girl who’s spent most of her life indoors due to life-threatening allergies. When the Zompocalypse hits, she’s on vacation in North Carolina, and is forced to trek through an immense national forest to reach her parents and safety. Her only companion is a country boy named Cole–cute, but a bit of a know-it-all. Ava is a fish-out-of-water in a big way, but she’s smart and capable. The two characters face all sorts of wild adventures and learn to depend on each other’s strengths in order to survive. They might even develop deeper feelings for each other. Fun meets romance meets lots of dead people.
BBB: How many more books will there be in this series?
AK: Three, but they aren’t really a series–you don’t need to read one to understand the others. Donna of the Dead, which came out it March, is set on a cruise ship. (And of course there are zombies on the cruise ship.) The two novels are set during the same time period–beyond that, completely different stories.
BBB: What sets Dead Over Heels apart from other books in the same genre?
AK: Readers hear the word “zombie” and expect blood and guts. My novels lean toward the funny side of zombies. And they always include romance! Think Warm Bodies instead of World War Z.
BBB: What types of characters / creatures can readers expect in your world?
AK: Dead Over Heels features a prissy city girl, a stubborn country boy, and a funny duo of redneck zombies.
BBB: If you could meet anyone from history, who would you meet and why?
AK: I’m such a reader–it would probably be some famous author. I’d love to meet Stephen King. Not sure that’s really someone from history, but he’s definitely at the top of my list!
BBB: What childish things do you still do as adult?
AK: Besides hiding in closets to scare people? Well, I’m a big fan of Halloween. We do lots of spooky decorations and candy eating at my house during October.
BBB: If Hollywood made a movie about your life, whom would you like to see play the lead role as you and why?
AK: In my imagination, it’d be somebody funny and cool, like Amy Poehler. In reality, it’d probably be an actress who looks like a book nerd.
BBB: Would you rather see a movie at the theater or at home on DVD? Why?
AK: Definitely, theater! Especially cinemas with HUGE screens. I love feeling like I’m part of the action!
BBB: What’s coming up for you for the rest of 2014 and into 2015??
AK: A trip to Iceland in April–I’m excited about that! And of course, more writing: another lighthearted zombie romance for Entangled Teen and a “secret” project I just started.
