I didn’t set out to write a trilogy.
That’s probably a weird thing to say now that the third book of my Immortal series (Immortal at the Edge of the World, following Immortal and Hellenic Immortal) has been released, inasmuch as “three books” is more or less the definition of a trilogy.
Even so, when I first sat down to write Immortal back in what seems like sometime in the eighteen-hundreds, I had only three things: an idea for a character, a beginning, and a vague ending. Then I wrote the book with that vague ending, discovered it didn’t work, and rewrote the last third.
One of the things I took out was a long conversation between the main character—Adam—and the only other immortal he’d ever seen, a mysterious red-haired woman. For nearly a decade (which is how much time has passed since I wrote that first draft) their conversation changed into something far different from what I had first written, into something that only existed in my head.
I didn’t write it into Hellenic Immortal because it wasn’t the time for it. I finally got to it at the end of Immortal at the Edge of the World.
So as I said, I didn’t set out to write a trilogy. I just wanted to find my way to the conversation between these two people and it turned out I had to tell a lot more story in order to get there than I had originally anticipated.
