Isaiyan Morrison Interview

Deamhan by Isaiyan Morrison
BBB: What is the craziest thing you’ve done lately?
IM: Recently my boyfriend and I put about $500 dollars in the Stock Market just because. This might not be considered crazy but to me, it was a wild ride. It was also an eye opener of how the Stock Market works and how easily you can gain and lose money.
BBB: If you could be invisible for a day, what would you do?
IM: I’d probably do something boring like walk down the street or in downtown Minneapolis, observing people from all walks of life. I like to see how society interacts with one another.
BBB: Tell us something nobody knows about you.
IM: I’m deathly afraid of toilets. Yes, toilets. I don’t like them. I never have. After I flush the toilet, I have to watch the water swirl down with the plunger in hand. Not watching it will freak me out. If the toilet overflows I panic. I think it has something to do with my childhood. In the middle of the night I heard water running. I got out of my bunk bed and went around the corner to the bathroom. At that time my family lived in a huge house built for wheelchair confinded individuals so the bathroom was huge. In the corner was this small toilet and there was a window right above it. The moon was out and its glow hit the surface of the toilet bowl. I saw the water (it was dark in color) twirling around and overflowing onto the floor. I screamed and ran to my parent’s bedroom.
BBB: If you had your own talk show, who would your first three guests be?
IM: Do they have to be living guests? I wish I could include historical figures but oh well. I would love to have Morgan Freeman, Cillian Murphy, and Amanda Plummer.
BBB: Please tell us more about Deamhan and the storyline that drives it.
IM: Deamhan is the story about a woman, Veronica, who goes back to Minnesota to find the truth about her mother’s disappearance over twenty years ago. The only thing she knows is that her parents worked for a secret organization and they had something to do with the disappearance.
When she starts to retrace her mother’s footsteps, she realizes that her mother was tracking a Deamhan and to find this Deamhan, she has to place herself in their dark and dangerous world.
Deamhan are psychic vampires who survive by remaining unknown to the world around them. However, Veronica’s appearance in the city and her search for answers brings these creatures into the spotlight against their will. There are eight types of Deamhan. Four are extinct. The other four are:
Ramanga: The most violent of all Deamhan who feed off the psychic energy in human blood. They are the only Deamhan who have sharp, retractable teeth.
Lamia: They are just as violent as Ramanga but they prefer the hunt over the kill. They feed by draining the psychic energy from their victim’s mouths, sucking them into dry husks.
Metusba: They feed off the psychic aura of their prey around them. They don’t have to kill their victims to survive so they are considered to be not as violent as the others however, they’re great fighters.
Lugat: They feed on the psychic imprints and like Metusba, they don’t need to kill their prey. They prefer to move freely in the human world and enjoy human company.
My website has more information about these creatures including character profiles. It’s a very interesting world.
BBB: How many more books will there be in the Deamhan Chronicles?
IM: When I first started brainstorming and writing the outlines, I expected the Deamhan Chronicles to be no more than four books. However, I’m constantly coming up with new ideas and other interesting characters. As of right now, I don’t know how long I want the books to go on. Hopefully not too long that the readers get bored of it.
BBB: What sets the Deamhan Chronicles apart from other books in the same genre?
IM: Deamhan are different from vampires although I like to refer to them as “cousins” to vampires. I realize that there are tons of books out there that deal with supernatural creatures; werewolves, vampires, ect. Well, I wanted to do things differently. I started researching and what I found amazed me. I had no idea that there are different types of vampires out there than just the average bloodsucking vampire. For example, Lamias (also spelled Lahmians) are related to the Queen Lamia (or the child of Poseidon, depending on where you read the tale.) who was turned into a demon and now devours children. Lugat originates from Albania. They feed on their victims just enough so that they don’t kill them. Depending on where you get your information, they are also shape shifters.
I also learned more about psychic vampires and that peaked my interest to the point that I wanted to write about them. I narrowed them down to eight different types.
Deamhan are mean and ruthless. They don’t cry about their existence. They kill to survive, if they have to, and majority of the time they like it. Survival is their main goal and an important aspect of their nature. Everything else comes second. Although vampire romance is currently popular, there is also a movement to bring vampires back to their dark and sadistic ways. That isn’t to say the Deamhan is violent for the sake of being violent. There is also mystery surrounding them with and underlining reference to infatuation with their prey (not love.)
As with any supernatural creatures, I try to include characters who come from all backgrounds and all races. There is so much lore out there that I want to incorporate it all if possible. I strongly believe in showing how similar and different these creatures in these cultures.
BBB: What types of characters / creatures can readers expect in your world?
IM: You can expect a strong female protagonist along, characters with different and intriguing backgrounds, mystery, suspense, and a little infatuation mixed in and I’m just referencing the human characters in the novel! As for Deamhan you run into both brutal yet sympathetic individuals who all have a desire to survive among the human world. You’ll find yourself wanting to know who can and can’t be trusted.
BBB: If you could meet anyone famous author either alive or dead, who would you meet and why?
IM: The poet Walt Whitman. I feel like I could literally sit down with him on a hill, have tea and reveal how I feel about the world without feeling weird.
BBB: What are your three favorite spices?
IM: Cayenne, lemon pepper, and cilantro.
BBB: If Hollywood made a movie about your life, whom would you like to see play the lead role as you and why?
IM: I’d like some unknown, up and coming Hollywood actress to play me. Not only would this give the actress a job but I would also be able to see myself, not just some famous actress on screen.
It’s like the Nicholas Cage syndrome. Whenever I see him on screen, I see him. I don’t see the character he’s playing. Another good example is Hugh Jackman in the X-Men and Wolverine movies. When I first saw him I saw Wolverine, not Hugh Jackman.
BBB: What is the best thing you have dressed up as for Halloween?
IM: When I was in fourth grade I dressed up as a African American Punky Brewster. It was the best Halloween ever!
BBB: What is the scariest thing you have ever done for fun?
IM: There is a swamp area located thirty minutes from me called Old Farmer’s Road. Apparently a woman’s car broke down and she walked, with her baby, for help. A farmer who lived there kidnapped her, placed the baby in a metal crate, and shot the crate. From what I know this is nothing but lore. However, the place is still spooky. When I went down there the bridge was over a hundred years old and passable by car. Once you drove over it, the road was so narrow that you couldn’t turn around. You had to drive through to get out. It was one of the scariest yet the most fun times I had.
BBB: What’s coming up for you for the rest of 2014 and into 2015??
IM: Writing, promoting, writing, and school work. I’m currently in the middle of obtaining my MA in Teaching Adult ESL. The program is hard (I have to maintain a B average in order to complete it) so time is priceless. I’m also currently writing the third book in the Deamhan Chronicles and I’ve completed a book in the Deamhan universe involving a main character. That book will be edited by my editor in October.
