The Unhappening of Genesis Lee
by Shallee McArthur
Publisher: Sky Pony Press
Release Date: November
Seventeen-year-old Genesis Lee has never forgotten anything. As one of the Mementi—a small group of genetically-enhanced humans—Gena remembers everything with the help of her Link bracelets, which preserve memories perfectly. But Links can be stolen, and six people have already lost their lives to a memory thief, including Gena’s best friend.
Anyone could be next. Which is why Gena is less than pleased to meet a strange but charming boy named Kalan who claims that they’ve not only met, but that Gena knows who the thief is.
The problem is, Gena doesn’t remember Kalan, she doesn’t remember seeing the thief, and she doesn’t know why she’s forgetting things— or how much else she might forget. As growing tensions between Mementi and ordinary humans drive the city of Havendale into chaos, Gena and Kalan team up to search for the thief. And as Gena loses more memories, they realize they have to solve the mystery fast.
Because Gena’s life is unhappening around her.
"Equal parts dark and delightful, McArthur's stunning debut takes an awesome SF premise and follows it deep into the maze of the human mind. I loved it so much I was jealous." – Dan Wells, author of the NYT bestselling PARTIALS Sequence
"A thrilling read from beginning to end, this stunning debut had me wishing I could record my memories to keep them safe! Just like Gena, I was desperate to discover the thief while at the same time hoping the story would never end." – Elana Johnson, author of the POSSESSION trilogy
Shallee McArthur originally wanted to be a scientist, until she discovered she liked her science best in fictional form. When she’s not writing young adult science fiction and fantasy, she’s attempting to raise her son and daughter as proper geeks. A little part of her heart is devoted to Africa after volunteering twice in Ghana. She has a degree in English from Brigham Young University and lives in Utah with her husband and two children.
She is represented by Hannah Bowman of Liza Dawson Associates. Her YA sci fi novel, THE UNHAPPENING OF GENESIS LEE, debuts from Sky Pony Press Nov. 4, 2014.
And because people always ask, her name is pronounced "shuh-LEE." But she answers to anything that sounds remotely close.
Based on current mood, I’ll say Lord of the Rings (we can pretend the whole trilogy is one movie, right?).
Right now I love The Broken from Stars in Stereo.
Love me some Indian food—chicken tikka masala!
“Without words, we can’t think. Words have magic. Stories have power. A good story is the finest way to motivate people.” – Anne Perry
I saw (nearly) all the stars from Star Trek: The Next Generation at Salt Lake Comic Con this year. I went all squeal-y and started snapping pictures.
Also, Doctor Who and My Little Pony make my inner fangirl squee.
I always dreamed of meeting Lois Lowry, since The Giver is one of my favorite books (and helped inspire mine). And lucky me, I got to do that a few years ago!
Hi, my name is Shallee and I’m a book addict. ;) I’d mostly like to say thanks to everyone out there who reads books of any kind. I love books, and I love people who love books. GROUP HUG.
Hello Shallee! We are super excited to host you in our FFBC.
Aw, thanks! I’m thrilled to be here! You’re wonderful hosts :)
It’s about a girl who stores her memories in external objects, and has to hunt down a memory thief with the help of the only person she’s ever forgotten.
One memory-related bit I found particularly fascinating was on why we forget things when walking into a different room. Apparently, crossing the threshold of a doorway is like ending a “scene” in our memories, and the doorway acts as a mental “event boundary.” It helps the brain compartmentalize events and memories.
Loyal, anxious, brave, dreamer, dancer
There was one that was fun to write—in a sort of sadistic way. I had an idea to give my characters a Thing that was very important to them…and then in a fit of evil genius, I decided I WOULD DESTROY THIS THING RIGHT IN FRONT OF THEM. I had way too much fun writing about the destruction of this Thing while my characters wailed in agony.
Gena, the main character: Janel Parrish. Kalan, the mysterious boy: a young Jeremy Sumpter. Cora, Gena’s best friend: Jasmine Villegas. Ren, Gena’s sister: Kristin Kreuk. Gena’s mom: Nicole Kidman. Gena’s dad: Russell Wong.
If I had to pick the theme song, I’d say Iridescent by Linkin Park. I listened to that song 5 bajillion times while writing the book, especially during the last few scenes.
The love theme would be I Won’t Give Up by Jason Mraz. Because it’s so Kalan, and I love him.
