Ryan leaned carefully into their mother’s side, delivering a gentle hug. He kissed her cheek. “I’ll be back later tonight.” He stepped to the open door nearly knocking down—
Chloe? What is she doing here? Chad’s eyebrows shot up as his eyes widened. Blinking away the dryness, his face relaxed.
Chloe touched Ryan’s forearm. “Did they get the guy? Have they found the woman?”
“Not yet. They know who the woman is. The guy has a rap sheet.” He looked into the room. “Bye, Mom.” That was probably all Ryan could reveal about the case.
Things got better when Ryan disappeared into the hall, and Chloe’s brown eyes landed on him. Her mouth opened and closed like a ventriloquist’s doll. No words were spoken.
As dumbfounded as she appeared, Chad approached with a hug. “It’s good to see you. But why are you here?” She’s lost weight.
“I work with Linda. What are you doing here?” Her eyebrows knitted together in confusion.
“You two know each other?” his mom asked with more gusto than he’d heard earlier.
They moved from the doorway into the room. “We met in college.” Chad stood at the foot of the bed. “She’s my mother, and Ryan is my brother. Mom changed her name when she divorced our father.” He forced himself to identify his relationship with Ryan.
Chloe approached the bedside and gently hugged Linda. “I am so sorry. If I would’ve moved out of his way, you wouldn’t have been shot. It’s my fault.”
“No, it’s not. You didn’t make me tackle you. I made that decision, and I’m glad I did. You’re alive, and I’ll be just fine.”
“Wait,” Chad exclaimed, grasping Chloe’s forearm, spinning her to face him. “You were there?”
“Chad, don’t yell. Chloe was trying to stop the guy from taking a woman out of the shelter.”
“You stood there and didn’t move after he pulled a gun and pointed it at you? Chloe, you put a lot of people in danger. My mom got shot because of you.”
“Chad, enough,” Linda said in a stern voice.
He stepped away from Chloe.
