MSR: ”Damaged people are dangerous; they know they can survive.”
BBB: What action would your name be if it were a verb?
MSR: To change something ordinary into something dark and disturbing.
BBB: Are you a morning or night person?
MSR: I have always been a night person. That’s changed a little bit over the years; I’m enjoying mornings more now. I’m not talking about six o’clock, though! More like nine or ten, wake up and have that first cup of coffee.
BBB: If I wasn’t afraid I would… (What?)
MSR: I’ve heard about this place–I think it’s off the Cape of Good Hope–where Great White sharks will swim up to your boat, poke their heads out of the water, and you can pet them on the nose. I’m terrified of sharks. I’m talking completely freaked out. But that would be awesome, in the true sense of the word. I can’t think of a more amazing experience.
BBB: Please tell us more about Blood Vengeance and the storyline that drives it.
MSR: Blood Vengeance is about Brennan Cooper, a lonely, awkward young man finding his way in the world. When he moves to San Francisco to start a new life, he stumbles upon a terrible haunting. A dead serial killer and his victims torment Brennan. He needs to uncover who these spirits were when they were alive and what they want now. His struggle with the forces in that apartment will change him. His fight against the evil is counterpointed by his journey into manhood.
BBB: How many more books will there be in the this series, or is Blood Vengeance a stand-alone novel?
MSR: Blood Vengeance is a stand-alone novel. However, I think about where these people went after the action of this book. What did they do with their lives? Where are they now? I have a few ideas about that . . .
BBB: What sets Blood Vengeance apart from other books in the same genre?
MSR: This is a book about people. The characters are crucial in my work. The horror is there–the scares, the gore. I love all that! It’s in my bones. But at it’s core, I wanted this book to be about a young guy and his friends. Action, suspense, and terror don’t matter if you don’t care about who it’s happening to.
BBB: What types of characters / creatures can readers expect in your world?
MSR: I subscribe to Peter Straub’s idea that reality is a thin layer, covering up a dark, terrible world. I write about ordinary people living in an ordinary world that rips apart, letting in that dark matter that lurks just out of our sight and perception.
BBB: Do you believe in love at first sight?
MSR: Absolutely. I think people have these psychic “sockets.” Every so often, you meet a guy or girl with whom you just click. You plug right into them. That completed circuit is love at first sight.
BBB: Name one thing that drives you crazy.
MSR: Clutter. I’m an absolute clean freak!
BBB: If you were a mutant in the X-Men universe, what would your name and mutant power be?
MSR: I’ve thought about this a lot! I’d be Electrode, and have the power to control electricity. I would align myself with the Brotherhood, though refuse to harm any fellow mutants.
BBB: What’s coming up for you for in 2015?
MSR: Less Than Three Press will be publishing my novella, Uninoch, sometime very soon.
