Author October Weeks Interview and Contest
The Damned by October WeeksBBB: What would you do if you were the one survivor in a plane crash? OW: Try and honor those who lost their lives by living mine to the fullest.
BBB: If you woke up and had 2,000 unread fan emails and could only answer 300 of them how would you choose which ones to answer?
OW: First I would make sure none of the questions were repeat questions, so I only answer each one once. Then, I would go through and chose the most interesting questions.
BBB: Describe the color yellow to somebody who’s blind.
OW: The feeling of sunshine on your face.
BBB: Who is your favorite Disney Princess?
OW: Cinderella! I’ve watched the original so many times I’m surprised I haven’t worn out the dvd like I did the VHS tape.
BBB: Please tell us more about The Damned and the storyline that drives it.
OW: The Damned follows vampire slayer Tuck Houston, who is on the trail of a Damned vampire who has been taking slayers for months. He’s also responsible for the loss of two of her closest friends eight years, and she’s determined not to lose him on this hunt. She has no plans of letting him live once she finds him, no matter the cost to herself.
Tuck is tough woman, strong and a bit of a growing legend in slayer circles. But the cost has been great–she lost her mother when she was sixteen, two of the most important people in her life were taken from her by Damned vampire named Josef Dragos, and is hunted by a very unbalanced female vampire. All of those things collide in The Damned. Past, present, and future. And Tuck has to deal with all of that on the hunt for Josef.
BBB: How many more books will there be in the series or is The Damned a stand-alone book?
OW: Right now, there are two books in the series, though I have ideas for more. The sequel, Path to Damnation, is due out this month!
BBB: What sets The Damned apart from other books in the same genre?
OW: This book is urban fantasy without a great deal of romance. There is some in it, but those moments are not the center of the story. Tuck’s actions, and the actions of those around her, have consequences that will stretch into the next book.
BBB: What types of characters / creatures can readers expect in your world?
OW: Vampires! There is a hierarchy of vampires in this book: the strigoi, which are the oldest and most deadly of the vampires, who are bound to the night and can shift into wolves. The Vampyr, which are every day vampires who have control of their bloodlust and try to live amongst humans and can walk in sunlight. Then there’s the Damned, who live for torturing humans and drinking their blood–they traded the ability to walk under the sun for bloodlust and greed.
Slayers: they, of course, hunt and slay the vampires who murder humans and worse (save the strigoi, who are a whole different beast entirely). Some are lone slayers, some come from slayer families. They do have gifts and strengths that help them combat those of vampires, but they are physically weaker than what they hunt. It takes years of training before they go out into the field.
BBB: Why did you choose to write in your particular field or genre? If you write more than one, how do you balance them?
OW: I love the supernatural and preternatural! The paranormal and urban fantasy genre was a natural direction to go, and I find it hard to write outside of both genres. To balance writing in such dark worlds, I also write paranormal romance and erotica under the name Libby Bishop. Still paranormal, but a lot lighter and more focused on the love story.
BBB: What cultural value do you see in writing/reading/storytelling/etc.?
OW: I think reading is very important for people of all ages. The worlds writers create can be rich and wonderful, with both the ability to help you escape your troubles and to also teach you lessons and the value of history and different cultures. Storytelling is a great way to bring people together and show that a great deal can be learned from just listening to the tales of others–whether it be fiction or non-fiction..
BBB: What is the most important thing that people DON’T know about your subject/genre, that they need to know?
OW: The one complaint I always here (I’ve even complained about it) is that all UF is the same and there are no good stories anymore. That last isn’t true. There are books in the urban fantasy genre that don’t follow the same formula as the thousands that have flooded the market in the last several years. You have to search through the saturated market to find them, but they are out there. Whether they be from a traditional publisher or an indie publisher, you can find a fresh voice and a unique take on vampires, werewolves, and ghosts…etc–you just have to look for them.
BBB: What’s coming up for you for in 2015?
OW: Right now, Path to Damnation is the only other release this year. I have books on submission that I hope will be out this fall.
