Excerpt 1: Ryan

There was no sense of realty, no logical training, no thinking. When Ryan saw Donna, there was no more control. He took off, past football players that were taken aback and staring and others who were running. The ones that were in his way Ryan shoved as he moved so fast he blurred.

He was in front of Donna in an instant, getting right between her and the man made of pure electric lightning. Ryan’s muscles were pulsing, his chest producing growling sounds that were inhuman enough as to reveal to Donna that what she thought he was was a sham. His eyes were all animal, savage as his entire being processed the Electrolite hurting her. He saw pure red as he readied himself to crush and devour. If there was ever time he’d enjoy inflicting pain it would surely be now. Pain that was well overdue.

He looked at the Electrolite, about to jump high into the air and pounce on him as his mind heard the softness of Donna’s breathing from running for her life. He could smell her fear and hear her heartbeat, a heartbeat that made him remember the human part of himself again for a moment. He jumped up, ready to pounce on the fiend who had broken into his dad’s power plant months ago, and then had done something to him in New York as well that he couldn’t remember thanks to the gray memories. In the air as he attacked he was more than ready to feel and push through the sizzling and brutal shocks to the body and skull that would come as touching this thing equaled electrocution. Finally he’d end him. How dare you go after her! I’m going to break you!

In the air, his jumping usually turned into a human-like soar but something suddenly went wrong as his body, cloaked in darkness compared to the lit up man, suddenly went neutral as if all its abilities were pulled right from it. Then he was falling on the man whose own body dimmed down, becoming whole, losing its transparentness.

Then Ryan saw a human face as he came down on this man’s body. He locked eyes with a person who was in his forties but appeared withered and warn down like a dead soul lost to drugs and addictions. There was only one Biomax solider in the world that was as old and as crack addict crazy as this thing. Subject One, the Original Bio created by his dad. He’d been too old when he’d been experimented on and turned into Ryan’s kind and as a result, he’d lost his mind.

Subject One wasn’t an Electrolite, he was worse. He had the ability to access other Biomax soldier’s talents when he was close and use them for himself. That was why Ryan was suddenly human and the Original suddenly grew, his muscles flexing, his face looking more savage, more animal. He’d kill them all like a wild hyena and leave every student running for their lives in pieces. Ryan coming so close was the worst thing he could have done, but waiting and patient strategy like his father would have cautioned him had hardly mattered two seconds ago. All that mattered as the Original caught Ryan and punched into his shoulder, breaking the bone and causing him to feel the worst pain of his life, was to get Donna out.

“Well if it isn’t the pet that wears Richard’s face and some of his DNA. A different kind of new monster of Frankenstein’s, the thing. Hello, little Ryan,” croaked the Original. As he tried to laugh his crackled bone-chilling laugh, it came out like a roar. “So this is what the young man who wasn’t born, but made, feels like twenty-four seven.” The Original flexed his muscles and twisted Ryan’s arm like he was a rag doll. Ryan used all the strength he had not to scream. He was supposed to be stronger than this, a solider since birth with special abilities, but the pain that shot through him was paralyzing.

Ryan turned his eyes toward Donna who was so still, so afraid, her eyes seeing who knew what. All this was too much for a normal person like her to see. She needed to get out of here.

“Run,” he whimpered, hoping she’d obey. She didn’t.

Excerpt 2: Randy

“You need to get on track to passing your junior year Randy Applegate! It’s the second time you’ve attempted it. Don’t you ever want to graduate school, make your father proud and grow up?” The principal’s angry words thundered through Randy’s head as he walked down the hall, pissed off his shower, which his abilities had been turning into a steam sauna, had been interrupted.

Make my father proud. If only you knew how much I’d like to do the sheer opposite, asshole! But the sheer opposite wasn’t on his mind right now. He’d been told by his dad and brother to take a break from trying to catch David Young for a day, which was where Ryan was right now. Randy should have been out there protecting him, making sure Ryan didn’t mess things up for them, but his dad had hissed that Randy was completely out of it and to go “guard the school” in case Young, who was way too old to be showing up at a high school, made an appearance. In other words, Randy was told his talents weren’t needed right now and that was just fine by him.

He’d left without arguing, or without breathing one smart remark. He was still too numb to feel, lost since the moment he hadn’t been able to avenge Lea’s killer. I should have always known I was a worthless, good-for-nothing punk. But as long as he was still needed to protect what was left of his family, minus his father, he’d have to find a way to feel again. Hence, his and Willow’s absolutely perfect shower that might have done the trick if the coach that caught them would get a life or perhaps go get laid himself. Randy still burned with a need to feel something, anything.

He prowled the halls like a lion, his eyes going right to Gemma who rolled her own and strutted off; he’d ruined things there a long time ago. His eyes found the next hottest girl in school, Lynn Eris, but that was another big HELL NO, minus the time he and Lynn had that one make out in the past that they never talked about. As he rounded the corner near the exits, he found who he was looking for. Willow, the senior. She was still soaking wet, wearing men’s gym clothes in a hallway walk of shame as she emptied her locker quickly while waiting for her parents to come pick her up.

“Hey,” he said as he played with his lighter, the options, cigarette or girl, were the only two vices playing in his head like a movie screen.

“Hey,” she said as her soaking wet form met his own and she looked pretty shocked to see him. How long did she really think the principal was going to be able to keep him in his office? He approached as her eyes went next to students laughing and giggling as they passed them because everyone knew what naughty thing she and Randy had tried to achieve. “Sucks we had to get caught.”

“Yeah,” Randy said as he got close to her and watched her blush from top to bottom. With her shoulder length brown hair looking darker right now because it was wet and the excited glow in her eyes she almost reminded him of Brook, the city girl who he still sometimes thought about. Almost, but not quite. But Willow was sexy, he had to give her that, as her nervous smile grew more. “They called your parents?” he asked as he wondered if it would be her dad or mom showing up here. Her father was a sheriff and he’d stopped Randy more than a few times. Boy, will he be excited to see me now.

She nodded, about to say something when he interrupted.

“How long do you think you have?”

“About ten minutes if it’s my mom that’s on her way. She’d have to wait for her shift to get covered at work. I think all the sheriffs have been called to help out with some search at your dad’s plant this week.” Of course, he really should smile but a mention of his father made his face harden. Needing that distraction, he reached for her hand, his skin nearly scorching as she reacted with shocked and an excited smile as he pulled her closer.

“Ten minutes, we can work with then,” he said, and then before she could even process it he was pushing her up against the locker, kissing her hard as she gasp and then began pressing into him, getting into the embrace even more.

“God, your skin’s hot,” was all she could say when he finally parted for a breath.

He chuckled the smallest bit, beginning to feel again just a little, or maybe he was just telling himself that. At least this was a good distraction. “Come on.” He pulled her petite body as she giggled toward the Phys Ed halls, back to where the showers were that were absolutely off limits to students since there was no P.E. right now and especially off limits to them.

“The principal’s going to kill both of us if we go near where I think you’re taking me.”

“Nah. He said he better not catch me again with a girl in the guys’ locker room showers. He didn’t say anything about a girl pulling me into the ladies’ locker room showers, now did he?” At the rate he was moving it took them seconds to sneak into the closed gym. The minute they’d gotten into the abandoned locker room and over to the showers, and before the water could even get started or the curtain could get pulled shut, clothes were off and it was time to get lost in feeling something.

Excerpt 3: Donna

Donna ran through the water onto dry land as the Original cried out from falling and then being kicked over shallow rocks. As incredibly tired as Donna was feeling, the fact that she had achieved getting him wet changed something in herself, giving her more strength and confidence to somehow get out of this. She ran through the woods with soggy feet, her shoes were wet and it was hard to maneuver. Diving over sticks and dodging trees, she was nearly to the end of the woods when she heard a crackled, hazy roar coming from behind her. That only meant one thing …

“Donna!” she heard Ryan shout as she saw him in the distance trying to move quickly. Oh God, now he’s human too! Coming here to find her put him close to the Original again and that meant he could no longer move and soar like an animal. He was just a teenager; they both were as he moved toward her from across the trees in the darkness.

“Run!” she heard him yell and knew that any second the Original whom she’d just hurt and made powerless would be charged with Ryan’s abilities, the water no longer undoing her own power he had stolen. Just as she thought it, suddenly the Original was soaring, but he wasn’t soaring for Ryan who was trying to reach her. He was soaring toward Donna and this time he was so much more angry! Donna had been chased by abilities like these before but never powerless.

Oh my God! I’m dead.

Her eyes came back to Ryan right as the Original was about to pounce and claw her apart, or maybe grab her and pull her up into the trees. Suddenly Ryan pulled out something, a gun and it didn’t look normal. It was large and silver. He aimed it at the leaping Original and fired. The Original dogged the first massive bullet, which came out as more of a big painful looking dart. He was quick enough with Ryan’s powers to miss the second as well, but not the third and the fourth. Ryan got him twice in his stomach right where Donna had kicked him. The Original landed on the ground as it thundered from his body weight. He was about to grab at Donna when suddenly his eyes rolled back.

Donna thought she was about to have a nervous meltdown.

“Donna!” she heard Ryan yell as she found herself backing up from him for a moment. He was supposed to be the enemy, right? And yet her new memories told her otherwise. She was so confused.

Excerpt 4: Lynn

The minute she walked inside her room, slamming the door where the reflection of a high school hottie that she’d formed herself into came into view, she exhaled, enjoying the image, and then shut the lights off. The obsessive amount of mirrors were for the day time, when she needed to make sure her every manipulated feature was perfect. At night though, when she had no need to see her true form and couldn’t hold up her disguise any longer, Lynn then did everything she could to darken and look away from her reflection.

She collapsed on her bed, closing her eyes while still fully dressed, preparing herself to let go of pain and control as she exhaled and her skin that was bound together, crunched and turned, taking on her true appearance. A small scream escaped from her throat as she snapped back into her plain, scared self. She took a deep breath, trying not to gasp from the pain until the twisting and crunching from the bending of bone was over. Then, shaking a little and still laying down, she went to pull her shirt off when there was an awkward cough.

Within an instant, Lynn jumped up, feeling alert, pissed off, and exposed because not only her normal looks were showing again, but her pain had shown this time also. The process of her abilities morphing was a big shameful weakness. The fact that she only had half a shirt on exposing her too big of a bra now on her flat chest was the last thing on her mind. The moment her feet hit the ground and she came in contact with the tall, lengthy body, and bright silver eyes, her front leg kicked out, jetting toward David Young’s neck as he didn’t so much as flinch or jump back. Instead, his arm simply opened and reached, stretching and turning into liquid metal, catching her ankle before it could collide into him. His weird skin was soft and bubbly, and super cold, giving her ankle the unbalancing feeling of being in a liquid gravity free bubble instead of someone’s grasp.

“A ‘get out of my room, perv’ would have sufficed over an attempted kick to the face,” he said as Lynn made a “I’d like to rip your throat out so your head would fall poof and smash” face. She began changing her shape, everything but her leg, which she couldn’t turn while in his grasp. Pain tingled and took off like an acid as her scars smoothed back out, her skin became brighter. Growing taller and leaner would have been an option also if that wouldn’t have thrown off her equilibrium completely and had her falling on her face the moment he let go. She felt a sting in her eyes as their color changed and her lip plumped up, becoming alluring. The pull of her hair as it grew longer and bunched up thinker, turning from dark brown to blond, made her want to flinch, but no way would she show weakness now, not when he was in here. Instead, she fought to keep her eyes looking both strong and dangerous.

David shook his head. “Why do you do this to yourself when it hurts you?” he asked her as he still held her leg in the air. “I’ve seen the real you multiple times now. Putting yourself through the stress of morphing when you could save that energy for other things isn’t smart, Lynn Eris, not even for a solider.”

“You mean saving my energy for killing you?” she spat as she tried to wiggle her ankle free with no luck. The way his husky voice said her whole name was something she didn’t like.

“Oh, you think the three of you are capable of killing me?” She could tell he was fighting back a smile on that sexy face of his the way he talked about her, Ryan, and Randy trying to hunt him down, and that really made her want to shove a bomb down his throat, or do other things she didn’t want to admit to.
