Hawthorne, Massachusetts has always been a nice place, a safe place - a boring place. At least to waitress Tara Walker, who dreams of more excitement than slinging plates of seafood for Cape Cod tourists. But as Tara learns when she is attacked and forced to fight for her life, fate sometimes has a funny way of giving you exactly what you wish for. Faced with strange new powers and embroiled in a murder investigation, Tara must now race to uncover the secrets of the ancient Fury that has woken inside of her - and of the evil that stalks her.
As if Tara’s life hasn’t gotten complicated enough, she is forced to ally herself with Jackson Byrne, witness to her assault and uncle to a pint-sized oracle whose fate is intertwined with hers. Skeptical, stubborn, and oh-so-sexy, Jackson wrestles with demons of his own. He is determined to ignore the attraction rising between them even faster than the body count, but like it or not, he and Tara need each other if they are to unravel the mysteries that surround them.
My Review
The title was the main reason that I ask it from Netgally in the first place. I knew about furies from before(+ of the great series of Jim Butcher, which is totally something different)
So a little bout the plot - Tara work as a waitress in a restaurant and trying to save some money to buy her own restaurant. In meantime, she lives with two roommates that are also her best friends.
One boring night she decided that she need some entertainment, or maby a fling. So, after her shift she went all by herself to a local bar. Hawthorne, Massachusetts town is streets deserted because there is serial killer on the lose. The bar she chose to go, is quite empty except for the bartender, Nora.
She tried to get that the intention of the hot Jackson who just step in. But he just totally ignore her. Then she thought that he is the father of Nora's little girl, Ruby and backed off.
Ignored and a little drunk, she is decided to leave when she meets a man at the entrance. to her drunken eyes he looked nice. But things started to go south peaty fast - as the man didn't take no for an answer and tried to force himself on her.
In that moment something happen - Tara changes into something else. She got a new power that allow her to throw him away and then lift him by his neck. Then she kissed him and before long he was totally dead and her wounds just healed themselves.
Appalled, Tara has no idea what’s just happened, but she does know that no one will believe her. So she leaves the scene and escape home.
In the morning she told about i to her Bffs (Rachel and Alex). Rachel the walking Encyclopedia helped her to get to the bottom of it. To their credit, the take it in stride, especially after her eyes turn blood red and hair gets all snake like.
Apparently Tara is a Fury - Alecto. And she usually corporate with other 2 furies - Erinys and Dirus(Furies are part of Greek mythology and have been around for thousands of years, including the one occupying part of Tara’s mind right now. Talk about split personality. Furies live to bring vengeance to the world. If a fury doesn’t kill by taking energy from a person that is guilty of truly heinous crimes, then she starts to lose her own energy.)
But evil is still hot on her heels and the people she care for, while she still have to cope with the fury thing that dropped on her head. Tara doesn’t want to let go of “her”, of the person she is and let the Fury inside her take over. Its a slow partnership but they find a way to work together finally that keeps them both happy.
Other characters:
*Jackson Bryne is a broody, gorgeous man with some demons. Who doesn’t believe in supernatural really has it coming. He’s ex-navy Seal, and in town to watch over his sister-in-law and her daughter. He is judgmental but the situations that Tara puts herself in the end does save the day. He also, tries to deny the chemistry between them but they fail.
*Alex is an exotic dancer, one that had a horrible childhood. The only love of her life is dance, but with no money to further her study, she takes what work she can get.
*Rachel is the quiet, smart, librarian type. When they find out what going on with Tara, they jump in to help her.
*Nora, the bartender - knows what Tara is, because she has her own story of the paranormal type that I won’t go into here.
Into the picture enter a crazy neighbor Mrs. Hadley the witch that lives next door, Ruby the mini oracle who needs saving along with her mother Nora, an FBI agent, a serial killer, and a few other unsavory types, and this book gets even better.
Fair warning - The book, definitely, is in the adult category - there are at list 3 very steamy scenes. I understand that the author direct to a light fun book - But, I think the the idea of furies had more potential - historically, we do not accouter, very often, the idea of a female who know how to take care of herself. Even in ancient Greece females didn't considered much. The idea of furies as they came to help other females in distress also is an idea for itself. (so actually it is 3.5 rating)
