EXCERPT #1
A long workbench dominated the low-ceilinged area, and Amy was leaning over it, melting the serial number off a shoulder blade.
"Oh hell," said Tina, "How are you going to get the skin back on that?"
Amy lifted her visor. "There's a patch of skin growing in that tank over there." She nodded toward the corner. "It should take. He's not for show anyway, he's being sold to one of the restaurants."
Tina nodded. The restaurants were usually staffed with underground-market bots. While a handsome Hypton served the main course, it was often prepared behind the scenes by a stripped-down man-bot who'd had his face removed and his numbers melted away to avoid identification.
"I saw something interesting today," said Tina.
"Mmm?" Tina watched as Amy smoothed the melted area where the serial number had been. Serial chips on the newer Hyptons were holographically embedded, and it wouldn't be long before they'd have to come up with new procedures for erasing them.
"A really different bot. Short. Hairy."
"A Hypton?"
"I'm thinking no. Maybe he's an antique?"
"Can you get him?"
"He belongs to a friend."
"No, then." Amy had a rule about not stealing from people you knew.
"She might sell him. For less than he's worth, I mean. She doesn't like him."
"Find out what he is first. I'll take him if there's a profit in it. I do have some clients with unusual tastes."
"I think he's cute."
"Really?"
"Yeah. I mean, he's not hideous or anything. He's just not perfect."
Amy put down the tool she'd been using to smooth out the metal, and pulled an envelope from the pocket of her apron. "Now I'm really curious."
Tina reached out and took the envelope. "She's taking him to the dealership tomorrow. I'm meeting her there. If I can get him alone, I'll try to scan him."
"Good. Pay attention to any new security features they mention. And try to get a tour of the assembly area."
Tina stuffed the envelope down into her boot and let herself out. She didn't need to count it; Amy always paid what they'd agreed on.
She headed home to start going through her clothes. She needed to find something decent to wear to Hypton, Inc. with Lyssa tomorrow.
She needed to look like she belonged there.
EXCERPT #2
"What would you do if you saw him?"
"Who?"
"Look behind you."
Janie turned, and a man stood there with her. He wore faded canvas clothing, pale green, patched a thousand times. He was on the low end of tall, familiar somehow. "A Hypton?" No, too old.
"A real man," said Connie.
Janie threw her hands out, exasperated. Was her aunt losing her mind? "Oh great, another extinct creature."
"You didn't answer me. What would you do if you saw him?"
"Saw him where?" Janie decided it was quickest just to play along. She wanted to get home, get a shower and have Rodstang massage her and make her a cold drink. A strong one.
"Outside, of course."
"I don't know, kill him I guess? How do you kill those things? Do they have any special combat skills I need to be aware of?"
She looked up at the man. He was bigger than her, but he wouldn't be stronger or faster. He would be weak, like all unmodified humans. She had ten times his strength; if she wanted to kill him, it would be over in a few seconds.
"The trick isn't to kill him. It's to capture him without killing him. To keep him from harming himself."
"Shoot him on the stun setting, then restrain him. Disarm him if he had weapons. If he existed, I mean." Her voice pitched higher, slid up in volume, despite her better judgement.
"Get your things and meet me in the dining room. There's something else I need to show you."
Janie stomped out of the room. When she was gone, Connie climbed the three stairs onto the stage.
She stood as close to him as she could get without falling through him, breathed in like she could smell his scent, though he was only a ghostly image.
She ran her hands down his arms, laid her cheek against his translucent shoulder as she looked up at his face.
"Soon, you'll be home with me," she whispered, "and everything will be right again. No more running. No more hiding."
She pressed the button on the control she held, and stepped back as he quivered and faded, and finally vanished entirely.
