On a continent ruled by three empires, some are born with a “witchery”, a magical skill that sets them apart from others.
In the Witchlands, there are almost as many types of magic as there are ways to get in trouble—as two desperate young women know all too well.
Safiya is a Truthwitch, able to discern truth from lie. It’s a powerful magic that many would kill to have on their side, especially amongst the nobility to which Safi was born. So Safi must keep her gift hidden, lest she be used as a pawn in the struggle between empires.
Iseult, a Threadwitch, can see the invisible ties that bind and entangle the lives around her—but she cannot see the bonds that touch her own heart. Her unlikely friendship with Safi has taken her from life as an outcast into one of reckless adventure, where she is a cool, wary balance to Safi’s hotheaded impulsiveness.
Safi and Iseult just want to be free to live their own lives, but war is coming to the Witchlands. With the help of the cunning Prince Merik (a Windwitch and ship’s captain) and the hindrance of a Bloodwitch bent on revenge, the friends must fight emperors, princes, and mercenaries alike, who will stop at nothing to get their hands on a Truthwitch.
First - thank you Netgally for the opportunity to read this wonderful book and review it!
Guys! It was really hard to take a rest a and stop reading this book.
What a plot! what a wonderful build of a world of magic , which is the Witchlands, where there are almost as many types of magic! what bad-ass heroines! Great writing too!
Now I have to wait for the next book and this one still didn't come out....this kind of things can drive and addict reader to madness.
So what we have - as I mention above 2 bad-ass heroines:
Safiya(Safi) - which is a Truthwitch, able to discern truth from lie. Her magic is a powerful magic that many would kill to have on their side, especially amongst the Cartorran nobility to which she was born. Before she came to live in Mathew coffee shop she used to live with her uncle Eron in the falling a part, Hasstrel castle in the mountains. Living with her uncle was difficult, since he dishonorably discharge from the Hell-bards brigade(elites soldiers that purge the Cartorran empire from witches)as he always tend to be in one of his moods and most of the times drunkard. The emperor didn't like her family, but they always payed their meager tithes to him. while she lived with him her uncle, trained her as soldier and this training, also, kept by Mathew and his heart-thread Habim while she stay at the Mathew coffee shop in Venaza, south in the Dalmotti empire.
So Safi must keep her gift hidden, lest she be used as a pawn in the struggle between empires.
Iseult det Midenzi (Iz)- She is a partial Threadwitch (her mother is a true Threadwitch to her her the Midenzi tribe), who can see the invisible threads that bind and entangle the all the lives around her (except of the people of the void). She cannot see the bonds that touch her own heart. She is thread sister to Safi unlikely friendship with Safi has taken her from life as an outcast of Midenzi tribe of the Nomatsi. She also an outcast in the wide spread world outside her tribe where the Nomatsi tribes members feared from. She is a cool, wary balance to Safi’s hotheaded impulsiveness.
Safi and Iseult just wanted to be free to live their own lives, in the capital city, Venaza, of the Dalmotti empire, in their room above a coffee shop. This so unlikely companionship between so different characters is so strong and the due is cover for each other weakness. So book star with a terrible decision of Safi. After she lost all their money in card gambling she decided to return it by robbing the gold guild master. When they put their plain to motion suddenly they discovered that it isn't gong to work. Beside the too many guards there is another surprise for them - a bloodwitch which is also a Carawen monk. As a Carawen monk his martial art is superb and as a bloodwitch you can kill him only with decapitating.
So they had to run away. The problem is once a bloodwitch smell your blood he is going to be on your tail and he is very hard to get rid from. So they planed to try to go on a ship and run from the empire for a while. This plan also fail. Safi's uncle Eron, have a huge surprise prepared for her. But worse then this, their trial cause them to split ans splitting is really really not good for them.
The Venaza city host the truce summit and hundreds of diplomats came from all over the witchlands. A truce of 20 years between the 3 empires of the Witchlands (Marstok, Cartorran and Dalmotti)is coming to an end and everybody are ready to grab some power. war is coming to the Witchlands.
There is also a plague that attack witches of of kinds - the black plague. This illness cause to there magic to cleave. The cleaving is uncontrollable leash of their magic to the world, which can cause a terrible damage.
On top of this the 5 origin well - Air, Earth, Aether, Eater and fire(Some people also talk about six element the void) got dry. Some suspect that the cleaving plague is connected to the corruption of this 5 wells. The Carawen monks, which were responsible for the wells, believed that only the return of the Cahr Awen will restore the wells and by this this the cleaving. The Cahr Awen were 2 witches of legend. The legend tell they were able to cleanse even the darkest evils. There hadn't been any new Cahr Awen for almost 500 years.
With the help of the cunning Prince Merik of the Nubrevnan small kingdom(a Windwitch and ship’s captain) and the hindrance of a Bloodwitch Aeduan bent on revenge, the friends must fight emperors, princes, and mercenaries alike, who will stop at nothing to get their hands on a Truthwitch .
About the Author
A year later, when it came to pursuing her PhD or joining aforementioned Frenchman in Europe, Susan chose the latter. With no oceans nearby, she turned her attention to writing for publication. Three years later, her debut novel, Something Strange and Deadly was published by HarperCollins. You can look for her forthcoming book, Truthwitch, in fall 2015 from Tor.
These days, Susan spends most of her time writing more novels or teaching aspiring authors. She also enjoys long walks on the beach—really, she does! Tidal pools are always fun to marine biologists. She also enjoys long walks with her dogs (an Irish setter named Asimov and a terrier mutt named Princess Leia). But most of all, Susan enjoys reading. Science fiction, fantasy, literary—they’re all consumed with enthusiasm.
