Melissa set her feet on the floor, her head foggy. It was still Friday, wasn’t it? She’d worked a full and productive day, and tomorrow evening she’d be seeing Stone. But her deep slumber had been disturbed only seconds ago. She’d been awakened by a haunting tune. But how on earth could that be? She sat on the edge of the bed, her eyes adjusting to the dim light. Moonlight angled through the windows stretching long across the carpet and shimmering against the hardwood floor. It was the middle of the night, and yet she’d heard it. Someone was in the house playing the piano downstairs. Melissa shakily got to her feet, glancing around for something—anything—to take with her. She settled for the hefty flashlight that sat on her nightstand. Captain Bill had left in for her in the kitchen that first day, along with a note suggesting she keep it by her bedside for emergencies. Of course, he’d been thinking of the house losing power during a storm. Not of something like this.
Melissa laid a trembling hand on the doorknob and pushed open the door leading to the hall. Music spilled up the stairs and curved round toward her room, nearly blasting her with its force. She didn’t know whether she should call out, or try to catch the intruder unawares. Deciding the element of surprise might work in her favor, she opted to creep down the stairs, grimacing tightly as each one creaked. Though no one could surely hear her above the loud torrents of music. Fear coursed through her veins but Melissa propelled herself onward. Needing to confront it, least it confront her first. She descended the final riser and inched toward the parlor, as music crashed toward her in sonic waves. Melissa’s mouth felt dry and her heart struck violently against her ribcage, slamming like a jackhammer. She stepped around the corner, and her heart rose in her throat. The room was empty and the piano was still. Yet the music cascaded toward her from another room. The Victrola!
Melissa raced through the kitchen and into the living room, beholding the eerie sight: the old record player spinning around and around on its final track, music pouring from its fluted horn at high volume.
Moonlight glinted on the cove outside as the flashlight dropped from Melissa’s grasp.
