BBB: What is the strangest thing you ever did to research something for a story?
MP: Not necessarily strange, but one of the funnest things was joining a paranormal investigation and ghost hunting an old Vaudeville Theatre. BBB: What character was the toughest for you to get onto the page, and why? How did you finally crack it?
MP: Prince Reid from Lords of the Var: ac. He was so much fun to write as a side character. I really couldn’t wait for his story to watch the cocky prince fall. Then, when he finally did get his chance to be the hero, he didn’t do a thing I told him to. He completely went his own way. We fought the entire time.
BBB: Have you ever had second thoughts or regrets after killing off a main character?
MP: No.
BBB: How do you keep track of your world building?
MP: Meticulously.And then I usually misplace those notes, lol.
BBB: Please tell us more about Love Potions and the storyline that drives it.
MP: Erik MacGregor is from a clan of ancient Scottish warlocks. Family must come first, everyone else second. That’s how the clan survives. Erik isn’t looking for true love. After centuries of living, it’s not even a consideration…until his sister’s love potion prank goes terribly wrong making his new romantic interest the target of his embarrassingly obsessive behavior.
Lydia Barratt is trying hard to live down her small town reputation as the granddaughter to the eccentric “witch on the hill”. She likes her quiet, reclusive life living in the house she inherited from her grandmother and running her beauty product business, Love Potions. When the MacGregors purchase the mansion next to her house, she begins to realize maybe Gramma Annabelle wasn’t as crazy as everyone thought. Magick does exist and with it comes consequences.
Lydia has more than an incredibly sexy, lovesick warlock and his prankster family to worry about. Evil lurks within her shadows, threatening everything she holds dear.
BBB: Is Love Potions a stand alone or part of a series? If it is a series, How many more books will there be in this series?
MP: This hasn’t been decided yet. This is the first book in a proposed series. I tend to let my series go as long as readers want to read them. The MacGregors have a slew of cousins, friends, siblings…there are tons of possibilities.
BBB: What sets Love Potions apart from other books in the same genre?
MP: I would say the world building and character interactions, the mix of natural magic and real magick, evil paranormal villain (lidérc- a kind of psychic vampire), and the side characters who interfere like a meddlesome grandmother’s ghost.
The MacGregor clan is full of mischievous pranksters who have been trying to one up each other for centuries, so you can imagine what happens when one of them falls in love and the others are there just waiting to “help”…and to maybe get a little payback. They are so much fun to write.
BBB: What types of creatures/characters can readers expect in your world?
MP: Love Potions is so much fun. Sexy Scottish immortal warlocks. Natural witches (the non-magical kind). Ghosts. Lidérc- a kind of psychic vampire. Shifters. Did I mention the sexy Scots in kilts?
BBB: Did you do any kind of research to determine the details of your characters lives / lifestyles?
MP: Yes. I love research. For Love Potions I researched practical magic and green witches for Lydia’s heritage, as well as Scottish history for the MacGregor family.
BBB: Are you a plotser or a pantser? or a Planster (a combo of both)
MP: Planster
BBB: What’s the best thing that anyone said to you when you were in a writing low spot?
MP: Stop whining and just write.
BBB: Do you set a daily word count goal, time limit goal, or just go with the flow?
MP: I go with the hours I’m allotted. I keep a pretty tight schedule so my daily goal is to just do as much as I can.
BBB: What was the BEST book you read in 2013?
MP: Act of Mercy (PSI Ops) by Mandy M. Roth. *sigh* Duke.
