Andrea Perno Interview

BBB: Choose a movie title for the story of your life. AP: My Movie would be, Mr. Holland’s Opus. It’s a story for anyone who has had to postpone their dreams because life gets in the way. #storyofmylife
BBB: What is the scariest thing you have ever done for fun?
AP: It’s a toss up between cliff jumping from a very high height or taking on class 3 rapids on the Colorado River.
BBB: If your house or office were burning down, what would you take and why?
AP: My husband and my cats, everything else can be replaced.
BBB: Name one thing that drives you crazy about being an author or the publishing industry?
AP: One thing that drives me crazy about being an author is eventually you have to sleep. Between teaching full time and afterschool activities there is sometime very little time and energy left for anything else. Thank God for weekends.
BBB: Please tell us more about The Last Drop and the storyline that drives it.
AP: The Last Drop is a Sci-fi novel about the end of the world. The story is told from the perspective of a 16 year old boy growing up on a Military base that controls and distributes Earth’s last remaining water resources. Through a series of unfortunate events Earth’s safe water is destroyed and the only way to survive is to go to the next habitable planet. Our protagonist finds out that the scarcity of water extends far beyond Earth as he finds himself coming of age, trying to make the right decisions, protect the ones he loves and make sure ultimately, that humans don’t make the same mistakes on a new planet.
The story was, in part, inspired by an event that occurred at my school prior to writing the book. I work at a city school that at the time, about mid-may, didn’t have air conditioning. Our school is also such an old building that our pipes are lead and water can’t be consumed through them. Water is delivered in large cooler stations. On a particularly warm day where our windowless classroom temperatures soared to the upper 90’s some into the 100’s, our school ran out of water. The chaos that ensued inspired a great deal of research and helped craft the storyline that drives my trilogy.
BBB: Is The Last Drop a stand alone book or part of a series? If it is a series, how many more books will there be set in this world?
AP: The Last Drop  is a part of a planned Trilogy. There is the possibility for more, but right now I picture three books.
BBB: What sets The Last Drop  apart from other books in the same genre?
AP: Answering this question is a little difficult because I don’t want to sound pompous as if my book is better than other Sci-fi books written by the greats like Isaac Asimov and Orson Scott Card. I will say that readers have told me the book is an emotional rollercoaster that while fact based in many respects, The Last Drop is a very true to life descriptive story and invokes emotions rarely felt in the sometimes sterilized style of Science Fiction.
BBB: What types of creatures/characters can readers expect in your world?
AP: You can expect to find a little bit of everything in The Last Drop. You’ll see heroes and bad guys, bad guys that don’t know they’re really heroes. You’ll meet humanoid aliens and their pets on the new planet. You’ll see plants and animals in a unique light.
BBB: What drew you to write a Young Adult dystopian type book?
AP: I wrote the book for my students. Since I teach middle school, Young Adult seemed the way to go. Dystopian Sci-fi is what I like to read. It’s near and dear to my heart and something I know the most about. Therefore dystopian, Young Adult has become my wheel house.
BBB: If you won a million dollars, but you had to give half to a charity. Which charity do you pick, and what do you do with the rest of the money?
AP: I would pick an animal shelter as my charity of choice. As for the rest of the money, I would make sure my family has everything they need to be happy and then pay off the rest of my student loans with whatever is left over.
BBB: If someone made a movie of your life would it be a drama, a comedy, a romantic-comedy, action film, or science fiction?
AP: Drama
BBB: You are planning the most awesome dinner party of your life. Which three celebrities/authors/historical figures (past or present) would you invite and why?
AP: I would pick George Lucas for his attention to visual detail in creating and directing the ultimate Sci-fi experience. I would love to meet Suzanne Collins as she was the final catalyst to the actual writing of my book. I found my ‘voice’ through her brilliant series, The Hunger Games. And I would love to meet Tom Hanks. I feel like he would be a great person to hang out with. It’s Tom Hanks, you know you’re going to have a good time.
BBB: If you could take five things to a deserted island, what would you take? (besides books)
AP: Matches because I hate starting fires by hand. A medical kit chock full of every antibiotic and anti venom created because I’m very unlucky and will most likely get bitten by something poisonous. A life time supply of water purification tablets. A good sharp knife. Fishing hooks so I can catch fish to eat even though fish is my least favorite thing to consume.
BBB: What’s coming up for you for the rest of 2014 and into 2015?
AP: The completion of the second book in my trilogy as well as a separate, unrelated Sci-fi Romance that will be a stand alone novel. I also plan on doing a lot of travel this year.
