My Review
Again beware of the good neighbors!
The City of Fae definitely falls into the category of a "great dark Urban fantasy". I really enjoyed it a lot! (But It is not the first book by Pippa DaCosta that I enjoy to read.)
The Fae came "out" in the 70's to live with the Humans and because the Fae can be tricky and be spell you but yet there had to be three laws they had to abide by - The trinity law est. 1974. If you touch them, they take part of your essence (Draiocht). This is what sustains the Fae, but it also be spells the human they touch. Not right away, but after a few Touches, the person getting Touched becomes an addict. So the first law Look but not touch.
The second is touch but not feel. It mean that "shit can happen" and reality and the allure sometimes stronger then you. So if this happen to you try to not feel anything for them.... because it is the beginning of your doom.
The third law is - Feel, but never, never love - if you fall for a Fae your doom is Complete. The Fae will never love you back and you will end as essence supplier to you master.
The main character, Alina, had so much spunk and brave. (even when she discovered a lot of awful things about the purpose of her existence). On the day she got fired, Alina happen to stumbles upon a slumped Fae rock star, Reign, at the platform subway station. She knows the laws and risks surrounding physical contact with the Fae. But as a journalist, she can't help thinking that this chance meeting could land her a story. So, she assists him. It was weird because she also found herself helping him to escape the frightening, elite Fae authority (FA) agents. Now, he seems to be around every corner....
Little does Alina know but she is about to break the trinity rules, while sending everything she thought she knew into disarray.
Reign's keen interest in Alina is peculiar. She wonders if she's being be spelled by this handsome and irresistible Fae. And then he shows her another side to his world. Soon she discovers that the world she believed to exist is far different from anything she could have ever imagined.
The Fae think of themselves as "higher beings". The Fae are quicker, stronger, seductive, beautiful, it is their touch every human should fear. They believe that humans are worthless. The humans are no longer the top predators on earth. The Fae will use them and throw them' away once they're done. To them Earth is a playground they can trash until they're called home and the laws are only a temporary obstacle.
Under the streets of London there is very old and hungry Fae. She is their queen, but the humans know nothing about her and her plains. They also don't know that she belongs to those Fae that banished from the Fae realm. In fact she is one of the most ancient and powerful. This ancient entity, hunger not just for the measly magic that the human world could provide the Fae. but her hunger for power corrupt her long ago. This kind of hunger was the reason to her banishment from her world, there she turned from a beautiful creature to a monster. Half of her body is a giant spider.
And like a good spider that she is now, she is sitting below and patiently weave her cobwebs how to take control. She was trapped there by the four keepers power. But suddenly somebody begone to kill this keepers and their power to keep her there started to dwindle. Soon her prison cell will crack.
She also tricked and bound other powerful Fae to her needs and they must obey to her. As she can't come out from her underground prison they are bound to do whatever she wish.
Alina, comes to find that, she becomes a wanted woman from both the human & Fae laws and the hidden underground Fae.
The world building was absolutely fantastic. The plot is brilliant, constantly spiraling in unforeseen directions and taking the story to new books. The Fae are not hidden in this book, like most paranormal books, they're out in the open and everybody knows about them. You and the heroine believes she's normal until you both finds out that she's not. The idea of the Fae getting kicked out of their world, only to live underground in ours, until they come out to humans is fantastic. It’s unusual to read a book where the Fae aren’t the ones in power and for all they are revered here, they hold no power and live like homeless people. The cast is of well developed and complex characters that will make you root for them and cry over the choices they have to make.

I've enjoyed writing fiction for over 20 years. Writing is often a delight and a curse, but always an adventure. Each book is a labour of love. I hope you enjoy reading my books as much as I've enjoyed writing them.
